Symbian App
|
17 August 2010
|
|
The newest member of LEO's family of Apps for smartphones is the
Symbian App, supporting all devices of the S60 v5 series
(z. B. Nokia N97, Nokia N97mini, Nokia 5800).
Symbian OS
is widely used among mobile and smartphone service providers, so we're closing a
major gap here (though, alas, not the last one (-:).
Like our other apps, it is available free of charge and can be downloaded
at the
OVI Store.
The first version provides access to the German-English, -French, -Spanish, -Italian and -Russian dictionaries.
In addition to the full dictionary content, it also includes additional
information that can be found under
in the
original version, such as pronunciation, definitions and etymology.
>>more
Should you be unable to download the app from the Ovi Store because you're
using another manufacturer's Symbian device (e.g. Sony Ericsson), please click
here.
This will install the app on your smartphone. Please note the
system constraints mentioned above: the app only runs on devices of
the S60 v5 series.

Android vocabulary trainer and other Smartphone solutions
|
09 June 2010
|
|
In spite of all the improvements concerning the new dictionary version,
we still had time to further develop our Smartphone solutions:
|
|
-
For
iPhone/iPod
we managed to achieve major speed-ups. The Web app is now downloaded to
the devices, enabling, amongst other things, the planned implementation of the
vocabulary trainer function (see next topic).
The app will soon be available in the AppleStore.
-
The new version for Android-based smart-phones now offers the vocabulary trainer function
in addition to the dictionary. The vocabulary trainer can be used on- and offline
and the synchronisation of vocabularies and statistical
data between the smart-phone and your personalised LEO Web account occurs "at the
push of a button".

|
Seeing that on June 1, there were more than 50,000 downloads of the Android app,
smart-phone solutions are obviously in high demand.
Therefore we not only started working on a Symbian App, but are also
in contact with RIM concerning a self-contained app for
BlackBerry
(without using the browser, as is the case in the current version).
Further improvements to the existing smart-phone solutions include a new version
of the forum tailored to small displays, showing additional information relevant
to search terms and the vocabulary trainer for further
smart-phones. Naturally, it'll take a while to develop and implement all the new
features - but we're working on it ... and we'd like
to point out that all smart-phone solutions will remain available free of charge.

Latest news from LEO
|
12 April 2010
|
|
LEO is now in its
fourth year of operation
as an independent company.
We were tempted to mark the anniversary by handing out coupons, discounts and
freebies, but since we already offer everything for free on our website we'll
simply celebrate by announcing the new features and cooperations which we have
been working on in the last few months:
|
|
What's new in the dictionary?
-
German-Russian: After months of preparation, the latest addition to the
LEO family is finally available.
>>more
-
Linguatec pronunciation for German and Russian: The existing
cooperation with Linguatec allows us to offer pronunciation files for
Russian. We have also changed over to Linguatec as our provider of audio files
for the German entries in all our dictionaries.
>>more
-
Advanced search: The link 'Advanced search' to the left of the search box takes you to a menu where it is possible to apply filters that will change the
order in which the possible translations for a word are shown. For example,
entries with a domain or word class tag can be listed before all other entries.
>>more
-
Order of results: The continuing growth of all our dictionaries
has made the sheer number of possible translations for a word a little
overwhelming. To make the list of results a little less unwieldy, we have
worked on improving the order in which the entries are sorted.
>>more
-
New search feature - text mode: The Text button in the search box
hints at the new feature: you can paste your source text in a text field and
simply click on a word in the text to look it up in the dictionary without having to jump between the dictionary and your document.
-
Links to additional information: As a side-effect of the more
advanced analysis
of inflected forms which we have developed for the new dictionary version and
certain trainer features, we are in a position to offer more
links in the additional information menu behind the
icons.
>>more
-
Cooperation with Macmillan:
We have added a new link to the additional information menu behind the
icons in the German-English dictionary. This link takes you to the
English dictionary and thesaurus
from Macmillan Dictionary
>>more
-
Lion: The latest Lion version supports Chinese and Russian. Since this
required changing our encoding to Unicode (UTF-8), all existing Lion versions
need to be updated.
>>more
|
|
What's new in the trainer?
-
Cooperation with dalango: As part of a new cooperation with
dalango, a number of interesting
online exercises are available for English and Spanish which will change on a
regular basis.
>>more
-
Vocab learning with box system: The trainer will adapt to your progress
and file words into different "boxes" (folders) depending on how well you have
mastered them. The folders are stored in your Private word lists under
Vocab drill and Memorize.
>>more
-
Sharing vocabulary lists: Shared vocabulary lists are available for
revision to all users.
Vocabulary lists and exercises can be filtered according
to the level of difficulty (language level), provided the author has indicated
it.

Functionality:
The text mode allows you to copy or type a text into the text field above and, by highlighting individual words or word strings with the mouse, send a query to the dictionary. The text mode thus offers an easy way to look up words from a document without having to type them individually into the search field. - The text mode offers no machine translation. Procedure: - Copy or type a text into the text field.
- Check the 'search direction' above the text field.
- Highlight one or several words with the mouse.
Further details on search results:- If you highlight an individual word the dictionary results will include translations for the word and all possible base forms. Words in texts are usually inflected, but the dictionary will generally only contain an entry for the base form of a word.
- If you highlight a string of words, the results in the dictionary will only include entries that contain at least half of the search words - therefore, it makes little sense to highlight a whole text. A search for an inflected word generally also returns results for other forms of the same base form (e.g. a search for "machst" also returns results for "machte").
