Ich habe in meiner Kursarbeit einen Artikelfehler gemacht. Ich habe mir einige Artikelregeln durchgelesen, ich weiß aber immer noch nicht wirklich, was ich falsch gemacht habe.

Ich habe geschrieben:
the author works with an exaggeration.

Müsste ich "the" oder einfach gar keine Artikel benutzen? Ich bitte um Erklärung.

Ich vermute mal, dass hier kein Artikel stehen sollte, insbesondere, wenn "exxaggeration" als Stilmittel gemeint ist, und nicht als ein besonderes Ereignis.
Das lässt sich aber so aus der Ferne, ohne den Kontext zu kennen, nicht feststellen.

You can't really work with (an) exaggeration. You can use it or apply it, e.g.

...or it might have been clearer to simply say: the author exaggerates (throughout/in his work)

the noun 'exaggeration' just doesn't seem to work so well here (but then we may be missing the rest of the context?)

I think you could say something like "the author uses exaggeration as a technique or tool ..." for instance, but other than that, I concur with RES-can.
