TopicRosetta Stone software

I'm considering getting the Rosetta Stone software, to improve my knowledge of French. Is anyone familiar with it? Any opinions?

http://www.rosettastone.de/

http://www.rosettastone.com/

It's gotten generally good reviews in the press and online. But it's not cheap and I want to make sure it's worth the price.

Based on the demo, the technique teaches words and phrases using pictures, and avoids translations. (So it will show a picture of a dog, and label it as a "chien", but it will never tell you that it's a "dog".) I'm particularly interested to know how well this approach covers abstract vocabulary. It's easy to teach woman, dog, drink, I'd like to order soup. But does it cover words like chemistry, affair, arrange, happiness, insult, lawsuit, Romania

And what about grammar? Does it teach gramm Will I understand passé composé, conditionell, subjonctif, etc?

Thanks.

Eric, I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard good things.
I don't know any of the details, grammar etc.
It is expensive.

There is a free trial download:

...but then maybe you were aware of that anyway :)

Thanks for pointing out my previous thread. I thought I had asked about this topic on LEO, but LEO could not find the thread for me. I entered "Rosetta Stone" in "Im Wörterbuch suchen", which also looks in threads, but LEO returned keine Treffer.

I also used Suche in allen Foren, but again nothing.

How did you find it? What am I doing wrong?

Maybe I need to use Google and search for "rosetta stone site:LEO.org". But it seems very odd that LEO can't find it.

I've been gnashing my teeth over the uselessness of the forum search in the new version for weeks, but even though several people have commented that they've also had problems, few of them seem to have reported it.

Maybe I'll try starting another thread in Re: LEO. I feel like I don't have anything to lose at this point, since the LEO team is already fed up with my mentioning anything about the emperor's clothes. )-:

Ich bin auch mit den Suchergebnissen unzufrieden - gelinde gesagt - und habe das bereits mehrmals in den entsprechenden Fäden eingestellt, nicht zuletzt da : related discussion: Neue Version: Forum

... hier war ich eher erstaunt, dass ich überhaupt etwas gefunden habe ...

eric, I'm not familar with this product, but it seems to work on the same principle as Rosetta Stone (of which I also have no knowledge), at a fraction of the cost:

Thanks, everyone.

I realize it's hard to tell whether a search fails because a thread on the topic doesn't exist, or because the search function didn't locate it. That's probably why more people haven't mentioned it.

It's also hard to tell whether forum usage as a whole is down because people are having problems with the new version, or just because it's spring, people are busy, the weather is nice, there are holidays for some, etc. (-:
