I don't think I have ever heard "mum" meaning "mother" in the US. In my experience, "mom" is the normal term in AE.

or "momma"

Momma for me has immediate associations of somebody rather large but, as I'm not exposed to AE much, that might be due entirely to 'Big Momma's House' ;)

(which - before I lose all street cred here - I've never seen. But I know the posters.)

"Momma" is used chiefly among African-Americans; but they are, after all, Americans, too. :-)

And no, "momma" does not automatically describe someone large. Hence: Big Momma's House, not just Momma's House.

Edit: "big momma" often also means "grandma." I don't know if it does in that movie, though.

Of course, momma is pronounced the same as mama (similar to Italian mamma). I think mama is probably common in some US immigrant families or their descendants to several generations.

But don't African-American mothers tend to be a bit on the large side, generally? ;))

(As do the Italian mammas, come to think of it.)

I think that's a stereotype, Gibson. Maybe in the South... :-)
