can a book have a "demographic"?

A student of mine (American native speaker) wrote this sentence in an exam:

"As the novel's demographic is mostly teenagers, a lot of problems shown in the book are catered towards this age group."

"the novel's demographic"? Can a book "have a demographic?"

thx

Interpreting the book's demographics as  contraction of the demographic distribution of the book's readers and changing the sentence accordingly to

As the demographic distribution of the novel's readers contains mostly teenagers, a lot of problems shown in the book are catered towards this age group

Yep it actually makes sense to me. I hear the use of a thing's demographic way too often in the meaning of users of the thing and their demographic distribution.

I think what is meant is the book's target demographic.

demographic (noun) A portion of a population, especially considered as consumers.

Can problems be catered towards something? I find the whole sentence less than Shakesperean...

Thou hast set the Shakespearean bar too high, methinks. ;)

To answer the OP question explicitly: yes, a book can have a demographic in the sense of a target audience. It seems as though demographic is sometimes used as a noun in places where demographic group is meant. And to answer a question not posed in the OP: a book's author can certainly cater to (not toward) a target audience, but problems don't generally cater to anyone, but they may speak to a given age group.
