I have certainly heard "proving ground" used in the UK for postings where the company wants to test the mettle of thrusting young executives on fast-track career development schemes.

#8: Yes, the abruptness can be startling, and there are bullies, and it somewhat likens a playground. That said, if you feel like you have something to contribute you should. All of us are sometimes right, and sometimes wrong. Obwohl die Besserwisser so etwas niemals zugeben würden. ;-)
