Kohl hat das Sozialministerium mit dem Frauenressort immer schon als Bewährungsplatz für Höheres benutzt.

Can you post a link or at least paste more for the context?

#4: proving ground

Not sure if that fits.

I'm just having a private giggle about how Kohl would have pronounced that sentence in German, and that's just me!

oops sorry! I misspelt proving ground.

# 5 cryme. If you disagree, please say why.

I have certainly heard "proving ground" used in the UK for postings where the company wants to test the mettle of thrusting young executives on fast-track career development schemes.

I don't really disagree, kew_l_s! Just not sure what fits with AMO! ;-)

EDIT: OT: I recently saw you have to take some flack, kew_l_s, and some not warranted. I think you have to find your way, and I think your contributions are good.

@cryme It's a bit like being a new boy in the playground. I'm gradually trying to avoid taking things too personally.

If I hadn't known the German word "Besserwisser" before, I'd have learnt by now. I mention no names;-)

#8: Yes, the abruptness can be startling, and there are bullies, and it somewhat likens a playground. That said, if you feel like you have something to contribute you should. All of us are sometimes right, and sometimes wrong. Obwohl die Besserwisser so etwas niemals zugeben würden. ;-)

Patience is a virtue, kann ich Dir nur sagen. Certainly don't take things too personally.

looking good...

cryme, if you have no idea or are not sure, why don't you just not post for a change? There was no need to ask for context, for a start.
