FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Topics:
Dictionary
  1. Why is my question not dealt with in the FAQ?
Some topics are dealt with in the Search Tips:

    • search, wildcard search
    • search results, filter function, additional information available via or , how to change the search direction and how to link results
    • focus behaviour for the search field (automatic focus vs. keyboard shortcut)

  2. Why are the buttons suddenly no longer working, why does the layout of the results page look funny, etc.?
If the layout of our pages looks "strange" or if previously available functions are no longer working, the reason is usually that the information stored in your browser cache is outdated. In this case, the cache needs to be cleared (usually by pressing Ctrl+F5) so that it is forced to load new data.

  3. Why is LEO so slow all of a sudden while all other sites are loading fine?
If you encounter long-term problems with our site these may be due to delays caused by a routing problem. In order to investigate the problem, please send us a so-called traceroute protocol. If you cannot ask a system administrator for help, the following instructions should enable you to obtain the traceroute information yourself (providing your system and firewall settings allow you to do a traceroute):

    • under Unix-based systems (e.g. Linux, MacOS):
      traceroute dict.leo.org.
    • under Windows systems: Open the command input window via
Start -> Run and typing cmd
This opens a DOS window in which you will be required to type the following command:
      tracert dict.leo.org.

Please send the results (preferably as a screenshot) to the LEO team and indicate the date when you first noticed the problem.

  4. What is the best way to search for expressions?
You can search for expressions by simply entering several words. You will get those results first that match most of your words, regardless of input order.

  5. Where can I find the conjugation tables for French and Spanish verbs, pronunciation sound files, information about English etymology, German grammar, etc.?
Please click the or button next to the relevant entry on the German or English/Spanish/French side of the results table and select the requested information. The loudspeaker symbol on the button indicates that the entry includes a sound file.

  6. How can I enter umlauts, vowels with accents and other diacritic characters?
Umlauts may be written with two vowels (ae instead of the actual umlaut ä etc.). Accents over vowels are ignored by the dictionary software and may be omitted, the same applies to other diacritic characters such as the cedille in French and the tilde in the Spanish ñ.

  7. Does LEO provide toolbars for easy access from other applications?
Yes, in a large variety. Please see Toolbars (Integration of the Dictionary in Operating Systems and Browsers).
Note to programmers: If you intend to develop a toolbar for public use, please be aware that we only give permission for toolbars that provide unchanged search results. Please also respect that we prefer to offer toolbars for our dictionaries on our own toolbar page (we are happy to give you a mention though).

  8. Why does LEO not include phonetic spelling, a list of common acronyms, conversion tables, prepositions, etc.?
The simple reason is that we do not have enough financial resources and members of staff. You may be able to find linguistic information which we cannot provide in the dictionary in our collection of Useful Links.

  9. How can I report errors?
You can use the Wrong Entry in LEO? forum to discuss dubious entries in the LEO dictionary.
Please report simple mistakes such as typos or misspelled words by using Report mistakes.

  10. How can I suggest a new entry for the dictionary?
Please refer to the detailed instructions in the forum FAQ

  11. Contributions
If you would like to donate word lists for integration into our dictionaries we will be happy to hear from you! Please send us an e-mail so that we can discuss the best course of action.
Naturally we can only integrate word lists for which you hold the copyright. As a legal precaution we need to point out the following: By submitting your word lists you agree to give LEO GmbH permission to use the data as required either directly or through third parties.

  12. Will LEO offer other dictionaries?
We have officially started work on a German-Russian dictionary on 18th February 09. Since considerable work will need to be invested in editorial and technical aspects of the dictionary, it is unlikely that we will be able to launch the new dictionary before the end of 2009.
If we will be able to expand our current range of dictionaries depends largely on whether someone will donate enough starting content which we can use as a basis for a new dictionary. This is currently only the case for Russian. Apart from that the usual limiting factors time and money also tend to play a role :-)

  13. Where can I find other dictionaries?
    Please check the Useful Links.

  14. Is there an offline version of the LEO dictionaries?
No, the LEO dictionaries are not available on CD or in print.

  15. Can I download the dictionaries?
No, the dictionaries are not available for download.

  16. Can I link from my own website to the LEO dictionaries?
Yes, we appreciate links to our site as long as you clearly indicate that your link leads to the LEO Dictionary, and providing your site does not contain illegal or pornographic content. Your link should lead to 'http://dict.leo.org/'.

  17. Can I provide my own search form on my website?
If you want to provide your own search form to access the LEO dictionary contact us to find out the conditions. We are usually happy to grant permission.

Forums
  1. Topics and usage of the forums
The forums were set up so that users of our dictionaries can discuss language-related questions. They are divided into different topics serving different needs. If you have not used a certain forum before, please click on the link "Info" to the right of the forum title and take the time to read the information about the forum. The information page will give you an idea about the purpose of the individual forums and tell you how to compose threads.

  2. How can I ask a question in the forums?
Before you start a new thread (discussion) please first search the forums to find out whether your question has been answered before. If you cannot find anything via the search function, go to the start page of our forums and chose the forum that is most relevant to your question (the headings of the different forums should give you an idication of which forum to select). When you have selected a forum, please click on the link "Start New Query/Neue Anfrage" at the top right-hand side of the page. The rest should be self-explanatory. Please make sure to provide sufficient context (who? where? what?) or example sentences.

  3. How can I suggest a new entry for the dictionary?
Please suggest new entries in the New Entry Forum, as this not only enables us to ensure a certain amount of quality control, but also means that we can link the new entry in the dictionary with the discussion in the forum. Users can thus refer to the discussion for useful information such as definitions, collocations, etc. Please only suggest well-researched word pairs and provide credible source material and/or context examples. For more details on how to structure a thread in the new entry forum please read this thread.
The New Entry forum is only intended for individual suggestions. If you would like to submit a whole list of words, which we usually welcome, please send us an e-mail.

  4. Does anybody from the LEO team read the discussions in the forums?
The only two forums where all entries are read and evaluated are New Entry, and Wrong Entry. Because there is currently only one person in charge of the forum discussions it may take quite a while for entries to be integrated or deleted, so please be patient :-).
