    cemetery vs cementary - what's the correct spelling?

    Kommentar
    Hi all.

    I know, Leo says that the correct way to say "Friedhof" in English is cemetery. However, I keep seeing and hearing "cementary" - both from natives and non-natives.

    What's going on? :) Thanks for your help!

    It's correctly spelled "cemetery"

    Cemetary is wrong. Spellcheck in both US and UK English confirm it as a misspelling.

    Even Wikipedia acknowledges "cemetary" as incorrect.

    Ah so it's just one of those words which are commonly misspelled. I've seen cemetery, cementery, cementary, and cemetary... But only cemetery is correct. Ok.. thanks... But... Any idea WHY so many people spell it incorrectly?

    Possibly it's not on "the list of words that children have to learn to spell at school"? How often does one need to write that word?

    Fehlschreibung, die durch den Film "Friedhof der Kuscheltiere" weite Verbreitung gefunden hat.

    Could it have to do with the confusion associated with "stationary" and "stationery"? Similarly the word "secretary" is commonly misspelled as secretery.

    Easy way to remember how to spell stationery and stationary. If it has to do with writing and paper it is stationery. Notice papER ends in ER and stationERy is spelled with ER.

    Is it possible that "cementary" or "cementery" (i.e. the N-Variant) is under the influence of Spanish "cementerio"?
    And is it also possible that the 3syllable reading of words like secretary lead to a hypercorrect cementary (secrtry: secretary cemetry: cementary)?

    Well, you "keep seeing and hearing" a lot of utter nonsense on any given day ...

    @AGB (4):

    Nein - die (zugegebenermaßen ebenso weit verbreitete und unsinnige) Fehlschreibung aus dem "Friedhof der Kuscheltiere" lautet Sematary.

    Die Variante mit "n" erinnert mich an die berüchtigte "Gelantine"...:o)
