Actually, http://www.duden.de has some information available online. If it's just to check spelling, gender, or if a word exists you can use their search function for free. Urban Dictionary - Wikipedia describes it a "a web based dictionary of slang phrases and phrases - http://www.urbandictionary.com/

A community-edited resource (like wikipedia), where anyone can enter definitions of new/strange/old/terms/expessions/slang words/idioms, and others vote on them to support the suggested definitions or not. Like Wikipedia in a way, but less careful and literary and more of an "in the street" feel. But quite good to find a slang or informal or new term you've never seen before. Definitions are often humorus and sometimes profane ("dirty words" and sexual content). Bus in spite of all that, it's often quite useful.

Google Images - images.google.com - You want the German word for in interossitor, and it's not in any of the normal places - Google Images finds pictures of it, which a Germon LEO person can look at and reconize as an Einfaltarnteneinpiggle. An alternative way to find unusual words. Works of course in the other direction, via Google.de. (Also Microsfts Bing" images.bing.com and images.bing.de.)

Zwei weniger zuverlässige, aber für erste Ideen hilfreiche Referenzen:

Linguee durchsucht Webseiten, die auf Deutsch und Englisch existieren. Leider sind die Übersetzungen teilweise schlecht bis falsch, aber für einen ersten Gedankenanstoß, den man dann unbedingt noch anderswo überprüfen muss, finde ich die Webseite ganz in Ordnung.

2.) http://books.google.de/

Google-Books (analog auch Google-News und die CNN- oder BBC-Webseiten). Verwende ich sehr oft, wenn ich mir unsicher bin, ob eine von mir auf Englisch geschriebene Formulierung idiomatisch ist. Ich schaue dann, in wie vielen Publikationen von Muttersprachlern mein Satzbruchstück auftaucht. Auch nicht absolut zuverlässig, aber wenigstens schon einmal besser als eine einfache Google-Suche.

Außerdem:

3.) Oxford Collocations Dictionary
Extrem praktisch für Englischlerner. Es nennt z.B. zu einem Nomen die Adjektive und Verben, die üblicherweise mit ihm auftreten, und liefert viele Beispielsätze. Ich habe das Wörterbuch in gedruckter Fassung, man kann es aber auch online finden (wahrscheinlich illegal eingescannt, daher stelle ich keinen Link ein). Man findet es, wenn man nach einem der Einträge googelt, z.B. "Snow had piled up against the walls of the cottage".

4.) "Atlas zur deutschen Alltagssprache" (Uni Augsburg)

Auf aktuellen Umfragen basierende Verbreitungskarten regionaler Begriffe und Aussprachevarianten. Sehr spannend, aber leider nicht besonders gut zum Nachschlagen geeignet. Beispiel-Eintrag:

One note: the thing to remember about the Merriam-Webster online dictionary is that it is not just another pretty face.

The Chicago Manual of Style has this to say about it:

There have actually been several similar threads, which should all still be in the archive, but it's probably a good topic to revisit from time to time.

There are also several threads on Bible translations. I use Bible Gateway myself as a quick reference for KJV and NIV, and http://diebibel.de for Luther and Einheitsü., but people should be aware that the rest of the Bible Gateway list, like much Bible information on the internet, is weighted toward conservative versions and missing several other standard translations (NRSV, Jerusalem, various BE).

MiMo's implied point that online references can't yet replace a good print library is well taken. (Unless you have access via an academic or large public library, including links to subscription-only reference sites and journals.)

A good American dictionary, for example, is the New Oxford (NOAD), which I don't believe is online.

I think part of that has to do with copyright issues. I, too, usually check KJV and NIV on Bible Gateway - as well as the Hebrew and Greek. It's easier than walking back to the den and hauling out my Stuttgartensia (Hebrew) or Westcott and Hort (Greek).

Danke, danke, DANKE! Habe diesen Faden direkt in meinem Browser verlinkt.

Bin selber immer noch ein Liebhaber der Papierform.

Benutze am liebsten "Learners Dictionary of Current English", weil man statt einer immer gleich mehrere Vokabeln lernt. Auch sind die verschiedenen Anwendungsbeispiele, sowie Unterschiede BE und AE (und all die anderen Sorten) und häufig gemachte Fehler ganz wichtige Informationen.

Dann habe ich noch den Duden "Deutsch als Fremdsprache" sehr gerne. Sogar als Muttersprachler ist man manchmal nicht sicher, wieso jetzt etwas ganz anders sein soll, als man es mit der Muttermilch (Dialekt) aufgesogen hat. Bsp.: Worte / Wörter

An dieser Stelle ein ganz dickes Kompliment an all die, die Deutsch als Fremdsprache lernen oder schon gelernt haben. Bei einer Sprache, die fast soviele Ausnahmen wie Regeln kennt, würde ich verzweifeln. Dann die Artikel, die Aussprache......

he Dictionary of the Scots Language (DSL) comprises electronic editions of the two major historical dictionaries of the Scots language: the 12-volume Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue (DOST) and the 10-volume Scottish National Dictionary (SND). DOST contains information about Scots words in use from the twelfth to the end of the seventeenth centuries (Older Scots); and SND contains information about Scots words in use from 1700 to the 1970s (modern Scots). Together these 22 volumes provide a comprehensive history of Scots, and a New Supplement now (2005) brings the record of the language up to date. These are therefore essential research tools for anyone interested in the history of either Scots or English language, and for historical or literary scholars whose sources are written in Scots or may contain Scots usages.

In the DSL, these two dictionaries are being published together in their full form for the first time. Thus, information on the earliest uses of Scots words can be presented alongside examples of the later development of the same words. By making the DSL freely available on the Internet, we also aim to widen access to the source dictionaries and to open up these rich lexicographic resources to anyone with an interest in Scots language and culture. Its educational uses range from university research to help with the production of Scots materials for young children.

For some reason I have until now overlooked Eric's comment, waaay back at the very beginning, that I recommend the Merriam-Webster Dictionary of English Usage.

Actually, I do not. If you can recall where I might have said that, let me know. It's no big deal, but it merits a brief comment.

I think it is significant that, although it recommends Merriam-Webster's Dictionary Online, the Chicago Manual of Style does not include the M-W usage dictionary in its bibliography. I believe that is because the M-W dictionary of usage is simply too permissive to be of any use to writers looking for guidance and standards. As with all permissivists, almost anything anyone wants to say is fine with the compilers of this reference work.

I suspect that the Merriam-Webster usage dictionary (I almost called it a "guide") is what you get when a dictionary company tries to produce a usage manual. A dictionary's job is to catalog the entire language, uncritically. That makes sense for a dictionary. It is disastrous in a usage guide.

I prefer style guides and authorities that have principles or at least try to find some, such as the Chicago Manual, Bryan Garner, the Fowlers, Strunk and White, Bernstein etc.

Just wanted to set the record straight.

I will hazard that the "free" dictionary gets all of its entries from other dictionaries. It looks like a cheap way to generate advertising revenue.

In Deiner #190 steht ein sogenanntes Deppenleerzeichen http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leerzeichen_in_K.... Deutsche Komposita werden entweder "zusammengeklebt" oder mit Bindestrich verbunden - ein Leerzeichen gilt bei uns nicht als Bindeglied zwischen zwei Wörtern.
