"it" ist allenfalls besser als "they," vor allem, wenn es sich einigermaßen formell lesen soll.

Obama thanks his people for the efforts THEY have made

While I'm all for using plurals with collective nouns, and see no problem with it here, there are arguments for saying something else if it avoids the problem. Akwabe has made one suggestion, but the trouble is, "people" is ambiguous. It could mean his supporters.

In BE, I find "Obama thanks his nation for the efforts IT has made" rather odd. It suggests a uniformity of purpose that I find somewhat troubling. It also seems to exclude Obama from the collective. I'm not too keen on "his" either. The Queen might be able to thank her nation, but not Obama.

I would be happier with "He thanked the nation for their efforts."
