Meaning of "on account" / "gegen Rechnung"

    Kommentar
I'm never quite sure of the expression "on account", as in a payment on account. My understanding is that it is a payment in advance, and this is how it's used by lawyers in England (payment on account of costs - http://www.rcsolicitors.co.uk/solicitors-cost...)

Payment on account means paying money up front towards the legal costs before the work is done. This can apply either at the start of the matter or during its conduct.

But on LEO "gegen Rechnung" is translated as "on account", but doesn't "gegen Rechnung" mean that payment is made on receipt of an invoice? So surely this is the opposite of the English "payment on account"?

I'm a bit confused, maybe I'm missing something...

on account 1 said of goods: to be paid for at a later date. 2 said of a sum: as partial payment

I guess this is a translation of the first meaning, when you buy something on account, as opposed to the second meaning, when you pay something on account.
