| Kommentar | This whole area is confusing because there are differences within AE and BE as well as between the two large categories. I would agree that there's no single word that covers every conceivable kind of Schrank including a fridge, but the most general word is probably 'cabinet' in AE, in contrast to 'cupboard' in BE.
For my region of AE,
cabinet - any storage unit with doors that is not as tall as the room; usually built-in but sometimes freestanding: kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, linen cabinet, medicine cabinet, china cabinet cupboard - a word used in other regions mainly for kitchen cabinets, i.e., to store dishes closet - any built-in storage area as tall as the room, with a door: clothes closet, coat closet, linen closet, bedroom closet, hall closet, hot-water closet wardrobe - a piece of furniture used to store hanging clothes, mainly in other countries or centuries chest (of drawers) - a tall piece of furniture with drawers, used to store folded clothes dresser - a lower piece of furniture with drawers and a mirror, used to store folded clothes, surface used for personal items cedar chest, hope chest, linen chest, etc. - a long low wooden box with a hinged lid, often placed at the end of a bed, used especially in past times to store clothes or bedding
For access to electrical switches, it could be either an electrical cabinet or an electrical closet. For fuses only, it would be the fuse box (even though it has a door like a cabinet).
