    Oberweis

    Kommentar
So, there is this ice-cream/dairy store in the Midwest (maybe they have branched out further/farther than I know). The (company) name is "Oberweis".

Jokingly to a German friend, I said "Oh, we should go into the store and tell them that that's not a German word."

I thought maybe "Oberweis" was a made up name like "Häagen-Dazs".

He, northern German, proceeded to tell me "That sounds like a typical southern German name".

Lo and behold, on their website (Oberweis'), it says that it from a family name.

Do you know how family names do somehow mean something or are derived from something in language? What would "Oberweis" mean if it could?

    Hi Ffive,
    not German, Luxembourgish.
Seems to run in the family:

They're also offering ice cream in the summer months, but they are more a "traiteur"
    You should see their gateaux...

Good idea, perhaps I should go to lunch there today...
Like it is very common here in the Moselle region, last names are derived from cities or villages. In fact Oberweis is a village on the the German side of the border to Luxembourg (Eifel), a region which belonged to Luxembourg at some time in the past, don't know exactly when.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Luxembourg Oberweis chocolate maker is not related to the ice cream people, though.

Interesting. It doesn't seem the company in the USA is related to the one in Luxembourg, but that helps me understand better where the name comes from, derivation, etc., itsy-bitsy.

If we can get the two companies to merge, we should get gateaux and ice-cream for like, forever. ;-) Gratis, versteht sich.

    In the USA:

I grew up drinking home-delivered milk from Oberweis, and my uncle delivered for them for a few years after returning from WWII. I'm not sure of the actual details, however, but the current family member who owns the business is quite right-wing, anti-immigrant, anti-gay, etc...

Ohne Lëtzebuergesch (Luxemburgisch) zu können, würde ich vermuten, dass der Ortsname einfach "Obere Wiese" oder "Über der Wiese" bedeutet.
