    essential to/ essential for

    Kommentar
    Hallo alle zusammen,

    Soweit ich weiß (und ich lasse mich gern eines besseren belehren) kann "essential" sowohl mit "to" als auch mit "for" gebraucht werden. Ich verwende es meistens mit to, habe aber festgestellt, dass es Formulierungen gibt in denen "for" richtiger klingt.

    Nun interessiert mich, ob es hierfür eine klare Regel gibt? Sprechen nach Gefühl ist ja schön und gut, aber als nicht native speaker fühle ich mich beim Schreiben meiner Dissertation mit einer Regel dann doch wohler! ;)

    Vielen Dank für eure Hilfe!
    LG

    Nach meinem Empfinden (als Non-Native Speaker):

    "something is essential to me" = ich halte es (subjektiv) für wichtig

    "something is essential for me" = es hat (tatsächlich) entscheidende Auswirkungen für mich

    Sicher lässt sich das aber nicht immer so klar unterscheiden ...

    @1:

    Naja, "essential" + "to" + Infinitiv ist ja wohl klar ...

    Glaube aber nicht, dass das hier gemeint ist.

    I don't think the native speaker would see much of a difference here, and maybe there is in some contexts, but I cant think of an example right now where it would make one.

    Are you serious, dude?

    How is that any different from "A steady income is essential for a decent living," Werner? Maybe you can enlighten me.

    It sounds wrong to my German ears. You are the expert, of course, and if you maintain that "to" is correct here I will be quiet.

    In your context, "to" may not be a prolific a as "for," but it's valid nonetheless, IMO. And, more importantly, the meaning is the same, I'd say. See here, for example:

    Having your own home is essential to a decent living. The problem lies on the financial issues.

    Human beings share the same basic needs: food, water, shelter, clothing … They are essential to a decent living and a minimal quality of life.

    "essential to a decent living" sounds really weird to my BE ears;
    and FWIW
    "essential to a decent living" Site:UK (sic) in Google UK
    produces one solitary hit ?

    "essential for a decent living" site: uk produces 18 hits, none of which appear to be UK sites

    but "make a decent living" on the other hand is idiomatic...

    I agree, mike, but the point really was that "to" or "for," as far as I can tell, are pretty much the same here. I can't help it that Werner picked such an odd sentence.

    yes, but "a decent living" is very idiomatic - one hears "make a decent living" almost every day, but "essential for a decent living" is apparently anything but idiomatic; it would make sense though in some contexts...
