After spending a couple of weeks with IE 6, which I assume you don't even want to hear about (worst problem: only 25 posts shown per thread, except in Reply mode in reverse), I was briefly able to post from IE 8 on a different computer week before last. But then all last week, since last Monday morning your time, I couldn't post at all, because LEO crashed IE every time I tried to log in. Here Siehe auch: Log in failing in IE
mikefm could log in via tdict, but I couldn't, and unfortunately that option is now gone from odict.
The symptoms were an antivirus warning about IE using too much memory, and a brief glimpse of the new righthand column with 8 languages, which I had never even seen before, just before the screen froze and I had to disconnect from the internet and end IE by force while it was opening new copies, all unendable. I now have temporary access to a third computer, also IE 8, but here too, I've already seen one antivirus warning (different antivirus program) about IE using too much memory, and the righthand column only displays at 75% zoom or less, even though the monitor is very large (flat-screen digital).
And that's not to mention the double vertical scrollbars in lists (as ad.joe reported -- pointless and hard to use); the random limits on numbers of threads shown in lists; the cursor that leaps to the bottom of the text box when you edit while composing (old IE 8 problem), or to the top of the text box when you mouse over the Absenden button (new problem); the Eingabehelfer that covers up half the page (sometimes including the Absenden button); or the inscrutable icons with no text (Japanese-flag car battery?!).
One of the worst nuisances is the new delay in loading individual forums and search results (blue wheel with spokes turning! grrr). That is, many functions are definitely not faster, but slower.
And then there's the weirdness of adding a new righthand column for the 8 languages, which we can't even see unless the LEO team approves of our screen resolution, even though we have a full-size desktop screen?! Surely, surely, there was plenty of blank space in the existing lefthand
navigation column, right below the few links already there? (That side, actually, is mildly improved in layout, thank you -- though like several other users, I wish the login were still over there.) Or the old layout at the top could have had 2 rows of 4 languages each? Wouldn't either of those design solutions have been far easier, both to program and to use?
I just don't understand what was wrong with the previous version, since it actually worked better in so many ways. A striking number of the overall impressions in this and other Re: LEO threads have not been positive. There have also been passing comments in other threads where people wonder quietly why the changes were made, since they don't seem to bring any improvements we've requested, like a forum search with more options and more results, not fewer. Was the new version perhaps only intended for mobile and tablet users, or only for dictionary or trainer users? If so, should we just forget the forum?
I would hate to do that. I still like LEO, it means something to me, and I've put a good deal into it over the years. But I have to say I'm discouraged.
If I don't post again soon, it could still be because I can't post at all. I wonder how many other people may also have been shut out, since IE 8 is still in wide use.
I'm sorry not to have anything more positive to report. I do appreciate your efforts, even if, as I hope you understand, I find the results disappointing. I hope you will at least think about the cumulative effect of all these problems. Thank you.
(Also sorry to have to be so serious today, but this was the first chance I've had to post recently.)
