I think we all agree that 'still' doesn't mean absolutely motionless, except mikefm.
Cro-Mignon's point in #72 raises the question of how much adverbs and adjectives can overlap -- what the criteria are for using one word rather than the other when there are two forms, or considering a word to be one category rather than the other when there's only one invariable form.
>>to lie helpless on the floor
>>to stand firm
>>Warum sind die Adjektivformen (statt helplessly und firmly) hier richtig?
Possibly because the verbs are more statal? (Stative?) I would expect the -ly forms (adverbs) more in active contexts, e.g., She squirmed helplessly as her big sister tickled her, or He grasped the boy's hand firmly and pulled him toward him.
With 'watched' it could go either way -- He watched helplessly as ... / He watched, helpless, as ...
>>Hast Du eine (wenigstens halbwegs akzeptable) Lösung für Deine technischen Probleme mit dem neuen LEO-Format gefunden?
Thank you for asking. As you see, I can manage to use some functions if I'm determined enough, but halfway acceptable, no, I'm afraid I wouldn't really say so -- certainly not compared to the previous version that actually worked. Maybe 30%? Not that even that would be a passing grade.
I can log in and post if I turn off scripts, but without scripts I can't use many functions, including the Eingabehelfer and Search, Eigene Artikel, and the pages within each individual forum after the first page. I can't, apparently, ever get more than the first 50 search results, which makes searches on common topics totally useless.
Even with scripts enabled, all those (frame-based?) functions take much longer to load (watch the little blue wheel go around, *yawn*), and they appear in an unnecessary second mini-frame with a second vertical scrollbar, so that I only see about 8 or 9 lines and have to scroll for the rest, even though the mini-frame only fills about half the height of the page, so there is lots of blank white space below it. It's like reading everything through a mailbox slot.
Also, I can't type in long threads, because the letters appear on the screen at the rate of about 1-2 characters per second, so I have to compose in another program like Word and paste my text in. Even then, in every comment field, the cursor leaps to the top of the text box if I inadvertently mouse over the Absenden button, and if I change a letter or a word somewhere in a paragraph already typed, that line of text leaps to the bottom of the text box -- both very disconcerting to suddenly find yourself paragraphs away from where you thought you were, and not be able to even see the rest of the text before sending.
There are several other things that for me are Verschlimmbesserungen, like the overlong text on the browser tabs, the disappearance of the names of the individual forum sections on the page itself, the squeezed columns, the dates in numeric-only form, the narrow lines, the loss of contrasting background color on alternate lines, the annoying added background color on mouseover, the needless blank white space down the whole righthand side of every page, the overlarge Eingabehelfer that covers up so many other things, the awkward rearrangement of text fields in New and Wrong Entry, the cryptic miniature icons (what is that Japanese car-battery thingy?), etc., etc. Those don't literally prevent me from accessing the forum, but they do make it a lot less pleasant to use.
And of course, I wonder how many people, like me last week, simply gave up on the forum altogether when it crashed their browser every time they tried to log in with IE 8.
Anyway, thank you for your concern. I've mentioned a lot of this in Re: LEO, but no one there seems to really want to deal with it, or at least, they haven't had time so far.
I have to say I don't understand why they're so determined to keep adding more frames and more scripts when those only seem to introduce more bugs and more complications.
