I remember learning that under the new German spelling rules, compositions of auseinander/durcheinander etc. + VERB were now written as two words, instead of as one, e.g.
auseinanderhalten --> auseinander halten
durcheinanderbringen --> durcheinander bringen
My Duden 'Deutsches Universalwörterbuch', Wahrig 'Deutsche Rechtschreibung' and Collins/Pons dictionary all back me up on this. They are all editions dating from between approximately 1999 and 2002.
Now, however, both LEO and the Duden online dictionary (e.g. http://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/auseinand...
) have them written as one word.
So was this a new rule that was introduced and then reversed because no-one observed it?
