A little more about public media in the USA.
NPR and PBS are "umbrella agencies" over varioius institutions that get involved in the production, distribution and broadcasting of that body of material that makes up public broadcasting there.
Added to the mix is the "Corporation for Public Broadcasting" ( http://www.cpb.org/
) which does indeed receive taxpayer funding from the Federal Government (USD 445,000,000 in 2014) and disburses that to the various public media outlets.
Other sources of funding for public media include corporate sponsorships (the sponsor's name is mentioned before or after the program, for example, and a short promotion may be made for them, but that's far more low-key than commercial media). Also, the various levels hold pledge drives during the year, in which they ask people to become sponsors.
