Comment | As others have said, I might be worried about delays and hassles at borders, but not unduly about personal safety once you reach your destination in Europe. With bombs and guns in the news and a travel alert in effect, you would just probably want to stay away from places in big cities with large concentrations of young people or tourists (bars, clubs, the most crowded sightseeing attractions), and of course keep an eye out for unattended bags or persons behaving suspiciously at large train stations and airports.
dude, if from your travels you know any words of Arabic, you might even be able to help some of the refugees passing through your hometown, who knows.
OT re Colombia:
Our relatives from there were just here and I was there a couple of years ago. With regard to crime, narcos, militias, etc., it's not as dangerous as it was 10 or 15 years ago, assuming you're with someone local who knows where to go and how to behave so as not to stand out.
The mountain roads, now, and the drivers, are another story -- but that's also not unknown in Austria, and probably doesn't bother you. (-;
