What do you mean by "regular use", HW? Does that mean only people under 40 (or some other age) use it "regularly"?
No, just the opposite. See Norbert's #7: "I would concur that most people under forty probably aren't familiar with the term. The people who still actively use it, like Messrs. Trump and Limbaugh, are usually in the senior-citizen category."
If you are not familiar with the word, that's fine, HW.
Of course I'm familiar with it. As I said, I used to hear it (on TV, primarily) when I was in junior high school, many years ago.
If you are not familiar with the word, that's fine, HW. But why recommend to others not to use a word based on your own ignorance?
First of all, thanks for the great compliment and very kind reference to my ignorance. Of course I'm not ignorant of the word.
And why am I recommending that others not use it? For the reasons already stated.
You seem to want to disregard the fact that many of the usage examples that have been provided here are directly contrary to the M-W and AHD definition of the word--which fact was one of my express reasons for raising this issue (#0).
