Oh, grr. I lost my long post.
Thanks for all the input; it's all much appreciated. I am planning a trip for 2019, so there's plenty of time to gather information.

@Dragon: in which case they might know Falco
My students do. I introduce them to a few highlights of Austrian music in their first trimester of German study.
@bluesky: Schon mit der alten Seilbahn kostete die Fahrt 52€ und mit der neuen ist es sicher nicht billiger geworden.
That's helpful information. While we can obviously spend some money on sights, we do have to be frugal. The airfare alone is an obstacle for lots of our families. Inexpensive excursions help keep the trip affordable and open to more of my students.
@Artisan: es wäre wirklich super, wenn du nach Hallstatt kommen würdest! Dann könnte ich dich endlich auch persönlich kennen lernen!
I was thinking the same thing! And since we can't go to our partner school, I thought we might as well visit some places I've never been. I hope you don't mind me showing up with teenagers in tow.
@Spinatwachtel: Partnachklamm: Thanks for the tip.
Flights haven't been determined yet. We might fly into Munich and out of Vienna. That's just one possibility. Nothing is set in stone. We won't be going to Hungary or Slovakia, however. Austria and Germany are exotic enough for the parents of my students.
Graz ist noch netter, liegt aber natürlich schon wieder abseits - die Zugfahrt (2:40h) über den Semmering ist aber toll.
I could be persuaded to go south. We had an exchange student from southern Austria at our school last year. He was friends with the exchange student who stayed with my husband and me, and I can imagine he would be interested in showing his town off to a group of students from his old school. If we could visit his school, too, that would be a plus. He lives in a very scenic area, but I'm not sure we could do Hallstatt, southern Austria and Vienna. I would probably have to choose, especially if we decide to spend a few days in the Munich area.
