Does anyone know - for sure - the origin of this phrase? I know it's a wonderful Sinom & Garfunkel song, but did they coin the phrase, or did it already exist. I've googled but haven't found anything conclusive.

It's been around since the first prostitutes spoke English.

Could you really call it a "phrase"? It just sounds like a piece of advice in everyday English to me.

    Yes, you're proably right.

My comment was directed to customer.

Archfarchnad -gb-I don't see why it shouldn't be called a phrase. But that doesn't really matter here. I just want to know its origin.

Do you think it might be a quote? What I mean when I say it isn't a phrase is that to me, it is rather like asking who coined the phrase "Where is my coat?" - which is also not a phrase AFAIK :-)

Archfarchnad -gb-in principle you're right, but it has become a phrase, if not a slogan. If you google it you come up with thousands of hits. People are using it to advertising their services.

I think they are mostly the lyrics to the song, but it does beat "where's my coat":
68.100 für "keep the customer satisfied.
    10.400 für "where's my coat?" :-)
If anything it does look as if Simon and Garfunkel coined the phrase.

Archfarchnad -gb- thanks - maybe we could get Paul Simon to write a song about misplaced gentlemen's outdoor garments and dedicate it to you..... :-),
