What is the weather like?

Neuer Versuch, da General Discussion geschwächelt hat; vielleicht klappt's ja.

wie Hans sagt: auf alle Fälle der Zoo (viel Zeit mitbringen!).
Sehenswert sind auch noch: das Gaslamp Quarter, Horton Plaza; im Norden: Mission Beach, La Jolla - ja, und ein must ist auch Coronado Island mit dem legendären Hotel, wo "Some like it hot" gedreht wurde. Lohnend ist auch das Harbor Village direkt am Ozean mit seine netten kleinen Geschäften. Genieße das mexikanische Flair und das mexikanische Essenm (hhmmm). Ach, es gibt noch vieles mehr.
Ich war insgesamt 3x in San Diego (für jeweils 1 Woche) und würde jederzeit gerne noch einmal hinfahren. Ich war jeweils im März da und das Wetter war immer "fine".

Hi Minu, vielleicht klappt's ja jetzt mit dem thread.
Also, ich habe da mal drei Monate gewohnt (im Sommer). Mein Empfehlung für europäische Haut: Sonnenschutzfaktor 214. Nach der ersten Woche knisterten meine Ohrläppchen nämlich nur so vor Sonnebrand. Auf jeden Fall viel Spaß. San Diego ist eine der US-Städte, die ich am meisten genossen habe. Muss aber zugeben, dass ich direkt am Mission Beach wohnte und die meiste Zeit am Strand verbarchte. Gegen 18:00 h kommen lustige Mexikaner an den Strand, die dir Gras verkaufen wollen, wenn du willst, mach ruhig, die Polizei kommt erst gegen 23:00 Uhr, um die Skaterkids zu vertreiben. :-)

Im Moment bin ich in SD. Das Wetter heute ist genau wie gestern, das genau wie vorgestern war, warm mit blauem Himmel und ohne eine Bewoelkung! Ich kann ganz ehrlich sagen, weil ich ueberall Asien, Nord Amerika, Sued Amerika, und doch Europa gereist bin, dass ich der Meinung bin, dass SD insgesamt die beste Stadt ist, insgesamt. Natuerlich hat es kaum die Schoenheit wie Venice oder Tuebingen oder eine Insel in der Karibik allerdings sind diese Staedte (nichts fuer ungut) einfacher zu besuchen als zu leben. SD ist gross aber nichts zu gross, einfach ein Job zu finden, man kann hier das ganze Jahr surfen, zwei Stunden bis geile schneebedecktes Gebirge, viele Arten der Essen, ist das Nachtleben der Hammer, ist's neben Mexiko, sind alle die Leute so aktiv und positiv und so weiter. Lange rede kurzer Sinn...SD ist nicht irgendetwas AM bestens aber jedoch ist sehr sehr gut in Bezug auf reichen Auswahlen.

ehrlich ist San Diego ja doch wunderschoen aber es regnet fast niemals im Sommer, das super geil fuer meisten Leute ist aber deswegen gibt's gar keine natuerliche Baeume und alle die Huegel sind leider braun. Wenn Du mich fragst, ziehe ich Asien oder Europa besser vor. Obwohl wenn Du deine Zeit am Strand oder im Club aufbringst dann wirst Du einen "fucking awesome" Urlaub in SD machen!

San Diego has nice weather all year round. Not too hot in the summer, and pleasantly warm in the winter. The Gaslamp Quarter has many good restaurants. If you are interested in such things, check out the San Diego Maritime Museum, or the Aviation Museum (the latter is close to the zoo, if I recall correctly). Try a harbor cruise. Take a walking tour of the downtown area. If interested, check out the Aircraft Carrier Museum aboard the USS Midway. If you are interested in history, check out the presidio (the oldest European settlement in (Upper) California) and the Serra Museum. You could also visit the old Spanish mission (the mission is on the outskirts of San Diego, so you'd probably need a car to get there; a lot of weddings take place there so call ahead to make sure you get to see the church).

A note on the zoo: Obviously, the major attraction is the pair of pandas. Typically, there's a long line in front of the panda exhibit, and visitors are asked to shuffle through at a fairly fast pace to keep throughout high. So you might want to go there right when the zoo opens to beat the crowd.

Ich fand San Diego touristisch nicht besonders interessant. Es gibt kaum Sehenswürdigkeiten, die den Namen verdienen. Meiner Meinung nach ist es eine Stadt, die zum Leben sehr schön ist, aber zum Anschauen nicht so...
Ich würde mich also dem Vorschlag anschließen, den Urlaub am Strand zu verbringen :-) Eine andere Möglichkeit ist natürlich, ein Auto zu mieten und z.B. in einen der vielen Nationalparks zu fahren, die gut zu erreichen sind. Viel Spaß auf jeden Fall in der Sonne!

Anscheinend ist in dem Faden ja etwas verlorengegangen, oder warum hat noch niemand Sea World erwähnt? Der Wild Animal Park ist auch interessant (Ist ein bisschen ausserhalb von SD, es gibt kombinierte Eintrittskarten mit dem Zoo). Zum Wohnen und für Restaurantbesuche kann ich Pacific Beach empfehlen (ist Richtung La Jolla).

Ich habe mich in San Diego immer sehr wohl gefühlt wie sonst selten in den USA aber fürs Europäerauge gibt es dort praktisch keine Touristattractions.

I agree with you Pachulke to some extent.
My father who has travelled around the world perhaps correctly describes Europe as a gold leafed, decorated, extremely beautiful, delicate china-glass tea cup, whereas the US is a plain, sturdy coffee mug!

Mission Bay: Sea World Blach Beach ;-)
Hafen: Star of India -> Segelschiff
San Diego Old Town
Cornado Brücke und Hotel
Leuchtturm mit Park
Der Landeanflug ist ein Erlebnis für sich.
Da sollte man die Kamera bereithalten.
Von SD kann man mit der S Bahn in 30 Minuten nach Mexico fahren.
Mexikanisches Essen ist wunderbar.
Wer sagt da gibt es nichts zu sehen der hat nichts von SD gesehen.
Die Bewohner von SD sind sehr freundlich... liegt am Klima... immer Sonnenschein.
Ich habe mit San Diego sehr gute Erfahrungen gemacht.

@Irma: Funny, I have been to San Diego several times, but I have never been to Sea World ...

Well, the plane landing in San Diego (with the plane just barely squeezing in over the houses, almost (old) Hong Kong style) might be noteworthy, but the airport certainly is nothing to write home about. IMHO it's unworthy of a fine city like San Diego. Pretty much the only advantage is that it's close to the downtown area and can be easily be reached by a short bus ride.

Mir ist noch etwas eingefallen, und zwar der Childrens' Pool in La Jolla. Das ist ein Strand, der durch eine große Mauer vor den Wellen geschützt wird. Wurde eigentlich für Kinder angelegt. Wiklich genutzt wird er aber nur von Robben. Vor ein paar Jahren zumindest waren immer ganz viele dort, und das nur ein paar Minuten vom Zentrum La Jollas. Fand ich sehr beeindruckend.
Außerdem ist es interessant mal nach Tijuana zu fahren. Da gibt es zwar keine wirklichen Sehenswürdigkeiten, aber die Grenze ist schon beeindruckend, wenn auch ziemlich deprimierend!
Die Anza Borrego Wüste ist nicht weit von San Diego, aber wahrscheinlich im August temperaturmäßig ein wenig heftig.
Ich fand San Diego jedenfalls ganz toll. Viel Spaß!

I wouldn't spend the money for SeaWorld again - and I got discounted tickets. It's not too bad and I'm sure a lot of people love it; I guess I just expected something somewhat different.

i agree with irma... one of the sights of san diego is tijuana...

Irma la Douce hat recht - die Robben in La Jolla sind nett - ein Besuch lohnt sich. Tijuana habe ich auch als irgendwie deprimierend empfuunden (ich würde nicht empfehlen, mit dem eigenen Wagen dorthin zu fahren; von San Diego gibt es eine gute S-Bahn-Verbindung). Die Deserts würde im August doch eher meiden.
Geschichtlich interessant sind auch die Missionen (ich glaueb mehr als 20), die sich an der Pazifik-Küste befinden (eine ist in San Diego). Nett ist auch der Trolley, um die Stadt zu erkunden (es gibt mehrere Linien und eine fährt z.B. auch nach La Jolla).
Wenn mir noch mehr einfällt, melde ich mich nochmal.
Jedenfalls wünsche ich Dir eine gute Reise und zusammen mit Deinem Mann eine tolle Zeit in San Diego!

@berta: There are 21 missions in the state of California (Alta California during Spanish times), in various states of preservation, plus a number of so-called asistencias (sub-missions). I have been inside 20 of the 21. Mission Dolores in San Francisco was closed when we got there, and we haven't tried again. There are also Spanish missions in other states in the southwest plus even more in Mexico (e.g. Baja California). The most famous of these is probably The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.

I don't consider Mission San Diego the most interesting one of the California missions, but it's certainly one of the nicer ones. In a nearby regional park one can find the ruins of the old mission dam (part of the mission's irrigation system). That's on my list for my next visit to the San Diego area.

Everyone keeps talking about the missions. The missions, especially the one in San Diego, is pretty boring IMHO. Go to Balboa Park instead. It is full of really awesome museums, plus it aint so bad on the eyes. I would recommend the aerospace, science, and the various art ones. On Sunday there is even this really cool place called the Houses of Hospitality where they have like 20 some odd countries in these little decorated houses giving out food from their respective countries, usually singing and dancing is standard fare. You could easily spend a day there walking around and what not. Other things that rock are the lighthouse at Point Loma, the Soledad Cross (both excellent views of the city), and not to mention Julian. Julian is this really cute old mining village in the mountains of SD. It is about an hour drive from Downtown but well worth it. Take Sunrise Highway off the 8 freeway all the way. It is a really beautiful drive and gives you a sense of what SD looked like before stripmalls and parking lots.
