    Kommasetzung bei e. g.

    Kommentar
    Bisher habe ich immer vor und nach einem eingeschobenen 'e. g.' die Kommas gesetzt - bis Zweifel aufkamen. Wie ist es denn richtig?

    Wieso hast Du überhaupt ein 'e.g.' drin, wenn Du doch
    '... FOR a, b, c and d ...' auflistest?

    The abbreviation e.g. is for the Latin exempli gratia, "for example." I.e., Latin id est, means "that is." They're not interchangeable. Both abbreviations should be followed by a comma.

    If you insist on using the abbreviation, perhaps “example given” will remind you to use e.g.,

    There is a recent thread on this; authorities give conflicting advice. I could not locate it readily but will try to find and post it later.

    In the meantime, there is another issue to consider in your example. I suspect very few Americans, seeing e.g., would read "exempli gratiae;" some would just read the initals as is; and a good many would read "for example." So your example sentence would by them be read:
    ... values for, for example, quality ...
    Might I reccommend rephrasing to avoid the possibility of the reduplicated "for"?

    Possibly: etc. at the end of the list
    --but then your sentence might end with an abbreviation, viz. etc., something recently advised against in a recent LEO thread.
    or: e.g. --> such things as
    of: e.g. --> , among other things,
    If they style is very formal, the use of "things" may be objectionable, in which case you mightbe able to substitute an appropriate noun for "things."

    It is currently on page 7 of the Sprachlabor list.
    Conflicting authorities on the use of punctuation surrounding e.g. may be found in the latter half of the thread.
