    Programme vs. Program

    Kommentar
I've got a question concerning the usage of programme/program in BE. I know that program is American, but I've seen the word program in BE as well when computer programmes (programs) are concerned.

My question is now if it always is 'program' in BE when I'm talking about computers. How would I write it in an official document?

    Cheers, Pete

    AFAIK in BE it's always

program when talking about computer programs and

programme when talking about other things: television programme, school programme etc

but I am not a native speaker, so I'd wait for someone from GB to confirm this before using it

Ja, ich kenne es auch wie von Deep Thought beschrieben. Die amerikanische Schreibweise hat sich im IT-Bereich halt auch im britischen Englisch durchgesetzt

Before computor programs existed the word programme was used in the uk to describe events that happened in a particular sequence. The BBC "Radio Times", contained details of broadcasts and their time and date of transmission. Program has come into widespread usage when describing sequential instructions used in computor languages. Another example of American influence through their dominance in this technology. Are we safe?
