Hallo,

wann benutzt ihr die Modalverben: can, could, may und might und wann Umschreibungen: maybe, perchance, happens, mayhap, perhaps usw.?

Also, wann sagt ihr: perhaps/maybe he is/must/will/would,etc., be intelligent und wann: He may/might/can/could, etc., be intelligent

Danke

42?

>(;-)

Forget "mayhap" and "perchance" in normal language.

Forget "happens" as an adverb unless you are in the North of England.

Danke, aber was heißt: 42?

>(;-)?

Wieso vergessen?

You should forget them because they are not used in modern English. You would normally only find these words in older English literature.

...and 'happens' as an adverb is used only in a restricted area of the globe.

"Perhaps he could be intelligent" is what I use most.

This is how I use them, hope it helps...

"He can be intelligent"
-> he's capable of acting in an intelligent manner

"He may/might/could be intelligent"
-> I'm not sure if he's intelligent or not.

"Maybe he's intelligent"
-> Number 2, possibly a little more informal.

Perhaps isn't used nearly as often as maybe, and I'd forget completely about 'perchance' and 'mayhap'.
