Hope this isn't seen as an abuse of LEO, but I thought there might be a good chance of finding someone who knows the answer to these questions here:
We (living in Germany) are in the market for a DVD-Recorder, having recently caved and gotten a television. Since I can envision ordering DVDs from the States or borrowing them from my parents, I want to make sure we get an appliance that can play DVDs from both Regions 1 and 2. We've done some research on the internet, but are not sure what to make of some of the claims.
We found one model with a large hard drive from Panasonic on the internet which claimed to be code-free, but I asked about it at a large media chain store here and was told Panasonic are _grundsätzlich_ Code 2. The store in question does not sell any code-free appliances.
But here several Panasonic models are listed as being code-free:
http://www.schlauershoppen.de/home-cinema/DVD...Are there websites that specialize in code-free products? I've read that many machines are sold as code-specific, but that if you know that write codes, you can turn of the specification. And on the site above, it says "bei uns Codefree..." Does this mean they are entering these codes prior to purchase? Where can one find such codes?
If the price differential isn't too drastic, we try to support local business, even if that's the huge chain...at least locals work there. But we'd also like to have a machine that can play both formats.
Anyone in LEO-Land have experience or advice on the topic?
Vielen Dank im Voraus!
