    get married + marry

    Kommentar
    Dear Leos,

What actually is the major difference in use between 'get married' and 'marry'? I've never caught that right. I know that schoolbooks + teachers often consider 'marry' wrong but especially in old literature 'marry' is frequently used. Thanks a lot for helping me.

    Merry X-mas + Happy 2008

still in some cultures women usually "get married" and men "marry".

It is not a matter of grammar, but of cultural circumstances

still in some cultures women and men usually "get married" by their parents.

Und auch im Deutschen kommt 'Ich bin verheiratet' aus der Zeit, als die Eltern ihre Kinder verheiratet haben.

Funny, I thought the only difference was one person marries another, while two people simply get married, the only difference being the focus on an individual or 2 individuals.

    I married John in 2002.

We or I got married in 2002, no object.

@ 3 Hallo Selkie: "We or I got married in 2002, no object."
Wie ist das im Englischen: 'We got married by a priest / Rabbi / our parents.' Geht das?

We were married by a priest, passive construction using just to marry.
