hazard ist ein Substantiv (Gefahr) (mit der Ausnahme der Redewendung "to hazard a guess" = eine Vermutung zu wagen)

Echt? Im LEO-Wörterbuch steht unter hazard aber auch gefährden (ich hatte nach "aufs Spiel setzen" gesucht und eine Gegenprobe gemacht).

vielleicht ist es ein AE/BE Unterschied, aber ich stimme dem LEO-Wörterbuch in dem Fall nicht zu (bin AE). Wie gesagt, ich kenne "hazard" als Verb nur als Teil der feststehende Redewendung "to hazard a guess". Ich würde niemals sagen, "He hazarded his family by leaving them alone on the sinking ship", sondern, "He jeopardized his family by ......."

I only know 'hazard a guess' as an example of hazard as a verb. The other verb uses given may well be obsolete (it's obviously related to the French 'hasarder'which is commonly used as a verb.
I would define 'hazard' (noun) more as 'risk' or 'danger'. 'Jeopardize' is of course a verb meaning to risk of place in danger and the correspodning noun is 'jeopardy' to place something in jeopardy is to jeopardize it.
Not very helpful I know, but it's the best I can do!

to put in jeopardy = aufs Spiel setzen
to hazard = riskieren
to jeopardize = (auch:) gefährden

@Todd: 'To hazard a guess' may be the most frequent use of the verb, but you can surely hazard money on some risky business.

The verbs are nor real synonyms. The examples in the Oxford Thesaurus sugggest that to hazard is to actually do something risky and to jeopardize has to do with the result of your having done it, such as:

'The outcome of the election jeopardized his chances of...' (= endanger). 'If you hazard your money on this or that you risk losing it' (= gamble, stake). IMO, the words are not interchangeable in these examples.

The Oxford Thesaurus gives synonyms for to 'jeopardize' in the sense of threaten (endanger, imperil, menace....) and damage (injure, harm, be detrimental to... and for 'hazard' in the sense of venture (put forward, proffer, speculate...) and risk (put at risk, jeopardize, take a chance with...)

A certain overlap, sure, but not quite the same thing.

SebastianW- "to hazard money on risky business" is acceptable to me, but the use of "hazard" as a verb is either so rare or so obsolete that it borders on the idiomatic. In other words, I would only use it with specific nouns as part of an accepted idiomatic construction.
