Das kann auf den Kontext ankommen. "A vast desert" im Gegensatz zu "a small desert" passt, z.B.

Ja, aber in einem Schultest hat mir mein Lehrer das kontext-lose Wort "vast" vorgelegt und um das Synonym gebeten. Gewählt habe ich "small", was er aber als falsch ansieht. Daher die Frage.

I'd go for "tiny", and don't think that "small" really fits well as an opposite. "Vast" means very, very big, so you need an opposite which means very, very small.

My first instinct was also "tiny", but Amy-MiMi's "miniscule" is also pretty good. CM2DD's reasoning was exactly the way I arrived there, as well.
