| Kommentar | I'm an English "Nachhilfe" teacher, and since it just so happens thatz yesterday, one of my students had to write about exactly that topic, I have just read ALL the comments here... (GOD, I must be bored...!)
Well, anyway, I just wanted to write two short comments:
1. I never wore designer clothes, because my parents didn't have the money and, what's much more important, I just didn't care! (And I still don't.) The jeans I'm wearing right now are from H&M, I've had them for more or less 6 years now, they probably cost like 30.- Euros... Same with my shoes - oh, no, wait, I've just realized, they actually ARE kind of designer shoes, if NIKE is considered a brand... But anyways, I've had them for 4 years, so they are certainly no longer "in", and I've been wearing them almost on a daily basis... Only thing that might be considered "special" about my style is my T-shirts: I like wearing T-shirts with fun prints or logos, most of them are from Sardinia, where my sister-in-law lives; they got prints like (the one I'm wearing today) a bunch of sheep wearing sunglasses, and amidst them, a camel... and below it says: "Climate Changes - Sardinia". I think it looks nice and fun, and since I'm a nice and fun person I like such T-shirts... Anyways, to cut a long story short: Would that be considered "Markenkleidung" - and would that be forbidden then??? I'd be strongly against that!!! I mean, give me any convincing reason why I shouldn't be allowed to wear my fun shirts?
Which brings me to my next point: Someone in this threat said school uniforms were good so that kids could get used to wearing suits and stuff and actually feeling comfortable in it - they might need it for their later life... well, I can just speak from my own experience: I've always hated suits and "fine clothes" - not even for my Matura (in DE: Abi) did I wear a suit (and imagine! I still passed it excellently, in jeans and a T-shirt! so obviously the argument that "upper class" clothes support your learing is not true - at least not for me). In fact, the only time I did wear a suit and actually felt comfortable in it was my wedding! (And I must admit, it was a designer suit, just don't ask me which designer, I'm not good with names... and I actually just don't care either) And as for the argument: You must wear suits if you want to get a decent job... I say NO! Well, it might be true for some jobs, but in the end I think it's your decision. When I teach (and I do quite a lot of it, plus I think you might not consider teaching English a low-class job, really) I wear my fun T-shirts and jeans or other pants I bought at H&M; when I translate (which IMHO is also quite a decent job) I wear the same. And should I ever be in the situation to apply for a job where suits are a must, I'll have to figure out a way how to convince my superiors that I work better when I feel comfortable, and I feel more comfortable when I war T-shirts than when I wear a suit...
OK, hope I haven't been too boring...
OH, yeah: The essence of it is: I think kids at school should be allowed to wear whatever they want, but I also think that I should be allowed to laugh at kiddies who think they are cool just cause they wear some expensive clothes - I think this is just ridiculous!!! And I think if more people just laughed at the superficiality of those kiddies, they'd eventually realize and recognize that it's just plane stupid to define yourself merely by the clothes you wear...
