Wir hatten Besuch zum Frühstück und dann hatten wir Hausverschönerungen gemacht, damit wir wenigstens heute "frei" haben. Es gab aber trotzdem gebastelte Karten und Windlichte...und ganz viele Küsschen (aber sie gibt es auch an 364 anderen Tagen!)

Ja, gestern und vorgestern war ich richtig fleißig. Mein Nachbar bemalte seinen Spritzrand am Haus rot und fragte, ob ich die Restfarbe haben wollte. Dann malte er 1,5m über seine Grenze, damit ich sofort weiter machen musste. Das bedeutete einen richtigen Rattenschwanz an Aufgaben...Wand saubermachen, dann eben noch die Wege, die Lichtschächte, den Garten von der Wand frei machen...naja...die Terrasse kann man auch machen, wenn man schon dabei ist. Also wenn man schon einen Pinsel in der Hand hat, dann könnte man auch das Tor lasieren. Versteht ihr? Nur weil der Nachbar über seine Grenze gemalt hat! So musste ich aber im Lichtschacht sitzen...bei den Asseln und Spinnen - igitt!...und malen. Ich durfte wirklich nicht darüber nachdenken, dass eine Spinne mit einem Durchmesser von ca.4-5cm sich irgendwo ganz in meiner Nähe versteckte. Nun aber sind wir mit den Ergebnissen sehr zufrieden.
Mein Sohn musste ich um 6.45h zum Bus fahren - Achtung Hamburger...suzisohn ist auf Klassenfahrt!!

I guess I never introduced myself properly here. So: Hi everyone, I'm a student from Germany, living/studying in England but at heart I'm Swiss.
I study a bit of everything it seems at the moment, am in my last year of my BA in European Studies (French), which means I read French language/literature and European politics. Actually, my Eastern European Politics module is rather general, we started with the inter-war period and ended with the accession of most CEE countries to the EU. So it is a bit of everything, but personally I concentrate my revision on the inter-war period, the weakening and the fall of communism, the disintegration of YUG and the accession to the EU. I'm rather happy to skip Stalinism, transition and democratisation for the purpose of the exam...
What subject do you lecture? If you lecture at a university, you are doing my dream job and I'd be very jealous!
Please correct my English, the nitpicker within me has found:
"lesen" for "read" as in "study" does not work in German

Repeating tests is very unconfortable, it could cause up to 4 exams a day, that's even worse than writing them while being sick and ill.

Yep, last year I had the great pleasure of spending one year in Neuchatel (hence the name) and I loved it soooo much! Well - maybe that's how I'm expressing a split personality, rather like that than in a different way!
Eastern Europe is but a small part of my degree but certainly not the least interesting.
Lemsip is like Marmite, it seems, you either love it or you hate it - I've heard people saying that's the good bit about being ill - getting to drink Lemsip *bäh*

@Steve - Eigentlich bin ich keiner "Nieren-Fan" - bin ganz froh, dass meine gut funktionieren - aber als "Nebengeschmack" in the Steak Pie sind sie lecker. So ungewöhnlich finde ich es nicht - hier werden Nieren doch auch gegessen...und noch viele anderen (mir) unappetlichen Sachen!

Kaum überlege ich, wie es mit der Arbeit weitergeht, klinget das Telefon: Angeblich wäre unter den Englischlehrern eine Seuche ausgebrochen und die Schule um die Ecke braucht meine Dienste "ganz dringend". Das bedeutet wieder zwischen zwei Schulen hetzen, aber es sind nur noch 5 Wochen bis zu den Ferien.

I'm vaccinated against the measles, so I think it will be something else.
But you're right, the measles are spreading again in Switzerland, because parents think that it's better for a child to have the measles than vaccinate it against it.
Unfortunately "letting nature go its course" means more or less the survival of the strongest that is to say either a child survives the measles well or it dies (no to mention the other children it might have contamined already).
Though when it comes to dying most people prefer not let nature run as it would and go to see a doctor.

Wegen Masern hast du wohl recht, das wäre eher unwahrscheinlich. Trotzdem scheint eine Impfung, wenn ich das alles recht verstanden habe, nicht unbedingt ein zu 100 % sicherer Schutz zu sein. Wenigstens in den Medienberichten hört es sich so an, als hätte sich einige Impfungen als verlässlicher (oder vielleicht auf langer Zeit wirksamer) als andere herausgestellt, zumal die Behörden in einigen Fällen Wiederimpfungen empfehlen. Vielleicht würde es auch nicht schaden, dich mal beim Familienarzt zu erkundigen. (-:

@Amy-MiMi, Twiglets sehen aus wie etwas kurz geratene Salzstangen, aber im Gegensatz zu Salzstangen, die gar kein Geschmack haben (nicht mal Salz!), haben Twiglets ein sehr würzigen Geschmack. Aber vorsicht, sie machen echt süchtig! Glücklicherweise findet man sie in fast jedem englischen Laden.

Aber Leute...ihr erzählt immer von "Kidney Pie"...es heißt "Steak & Kidney Pie"...die Nieren sind quasi nur als Gewürz dabei und die Füllung ist hauptsächlich wie Rindergulasch.

A well, I'm now using chemical weapons.
I like the cough syrup best. I tastes really awful, the best way to take it is to to chug-a-lug it and then put something sweet and sugary in your mouth.
It may cause you haluziations (oh, that was the gree-winged elephant I saw today - just kidding!) and problems handling a vehicule.
I had though no problems with handling my bicycle, but this means currntly no more driving lessons for lil snowflake.

Driving a car still takes(?) me a lot of concentration, last time when I had a driving lesson at 7am (very bad time for me, I'm not yet awake at all) I tried to change gears with the hand brake. Fortunately I only pulled it back and forth and not up and down :D


And how did the exams go at school, was it at least worth it?
One was a 4.75, not too good, but not too bad either.


Need to get better quickly, at the moment I really can't afford lying useless in bed, need to do something for my matura and for my usuall exams - over twenty during the next 1.5 months!!!!

@wi-chan, ich bin schon seit ein paar Monaten im Forum aktiv bin aber heute zum ersten mal im Quasselzimmer.

@suziq, ich wohne in Schleswig-Holstein, unweit von Glückstadt (ein schönes kleines Städtchen an der Elbe). Leider bin ich seit sechs Jahren Wochenendpendler und zur Zeit verbringe ich die Woche in Salzgitter, was nicht ganz so schön ist! Übrigens, was meine Deutschkenntnisse angeht, so bescheiden bin ich auch nicht! Im Profil steht "flüssig" (hab' eben gerade kontrolliert) und auch nach über zwanzig Jahren in Deutschland würde ich nie behaupten "sehr gut" Deutsch zu können!

Was die Twiglets angeht, hat suziq wahrscheinlich recht, dass sie tatsächlich etwas für Kenner sind! Wenn man englische Crisps (Chips) kennt und mag, dann sind die Chancen wahrscheinlich ganz gut, dass man Twiglets geniessen wird. Wenn man deutsche "feurige" Paprika-Chips gut gewürzt oder sogar scharf findet, dann eher nicht! :)

Hallo Flowerstar! Irgendwie habe ich deine früheren Auftritte verpasst (?)

Heute habe ich einen Schreck bekommen: um 8h stand die Polizei vor der Tür - meine Minizicke wurde von einem VW Bus auf den Zebrastreifen angefahren. Sie hat nur einige blauen Flecken und Schürfwunden und ist nach der ganzen Aufregung ganz munter (sonst würde ich wohl nicht hier sitzen und so locker darüber berichten!). Das Adrenalin baut sich aber nur langsam ab.

After years of silent Leo reading, I finally got myself a registered nick, and I hope to find the time for a post now and then. It has been eons since I have come back to CH (well, actually it's only 4 years), and I decided that my English definitely needs some brushing up.
It is a bit difficult to start without a real topic, but maybe I'll just jump right into this thread, hoping to catch some corrections from you - I promise I won't look up all the missing words before posting.

Judex, you really found some nice poetry. I just noticed I did not know the word "flück" in line 2 of "das Lied". I don't remember having read this before. Seems to be the same word as "flügge". It is a funny picture, because it evokes a very young lad with just a few sprouting facial hairs, like a young nestling? which doesn't have grown enough feathers to fly yet.

it took me a while to build up enough courage (I had to look that up, good start, isn't it? :-s) to write my first english snail post, because - although I learned English in school and sometimes read english texts for my studies - I never really actively used it. So this is my attempt to learn how to write in English. I would be very thankful for your corrections and will of course do my best to help the native English speakers with their German.

As I don't know what you would like to know about the new snails (favourite meal, hair colour, credit card number?) just ask. :)

Suziq, you are right, use of tense and word order are really my weak spots. (And there are quite some more, as you soon will find out.) When I am talking to people I can always pass for a slightly distracted person, but when it comes to writing it sometimes gets rather embarrassing.

A bit about myself? I'm male, Swiss, and 40+ (can't help any of these). I am my own boss, so I have time to hang out at Leo's during the day and do my work in the night. Or the other way round, whatever I feel like. Unlike some people here I am not especially into birds, but I don't mind hearing their singing, as long as it isn't pigeons on the balcony at 4:50 AM.

Oh, I forgot to tell you my attitude towards birds.
We have quite a lot of them in our garden and I always have a small cup with birdseed on my window sill (or ledge? which is the one at the outside?) - I call it "the cat's TV" (das Katzenkino). We (the cats and I) often watch all the sweet little titmice and blackbirds and last year even some nuthatches and a sqirrel there. (I hope I'm not the only one who needs to look up "nuthatch"...) And a few days ago we had a visitor, that was almost to big for my window sill: a crow! Very impressive to look at them so closely.
You see: I'm a bird-fan, too, but I have to confess, that I need our garden book to find out what kind of bird I'm looking at (except from the titmice and the crow). :-)

Ich hätte gestern wirklich gemeine Aufgaben für eine meiner neuen 5.Klassen vorbereiten sollen! So eine Klasse habe ich in meinem Leben nicht erlebt! Englisch unterrichten im Affenhaus im Zoo wäre wahrscheinlich einfacher gewesen. Es waren ca.18 Mädchen und 5 Jungs und sie waren zu keinem Zeitpunkt in der Lage leise zu sein. Es war für sie nicht möglich auf dem Stuhl sitzen zu bleiben und ich bin jetzt noch heiser - kaum hat sich der Adrenalinspiegel beruhigt...! *meckermodusaus*
Es gab mir aber die Bestätigung, dass die Schulwahl meiner Tochter richtig war - eine andere Schule zu wählen.

In the sixties you would get shopping coupons? with a lot of products, and as soon as you had collected 2500 points, you could trade them in for one of these wonderful books: "Zauberhaftes Indien", "Zu Fuss durch den Amazonas", "Volksbräuche Europas" - the world at your feet, uh, eyes. They went broke somewhere during the eighties, which is an absolute shame.

So you are a teacher? I guess you must have nerves of steel for that...

Today I studied like mad for my Eastern Europe exam and even attempted some past papers but one question I just didn't understand (or rather, I wasn't sure whether I knew what exactly was asked for). So I sent an e-mail to my lecturer, wrote him half a dissertation to show him that I don't just expect him to do the work for me but that I had actually thought about it. And the answer? "I only started teaching that course in 2007 and my questions are etwas anders formuliert". This is good to know but I was curious too and would have liked to know how to answer that question :-( And he misspelt my name. Insult! ;-)

Hello Amy-Mimi, I did not see that movie, and cannot provide any useful information on your possible confusion of tenses. So don't worry, possibly not entirely correct, but I cannot find any mistake.
And please don't send goslings. I strongly disapprove of whatever happened to the eight local goslings, and young goslings cannot be made responsibe for the stupidity of their parents, but I almost equally strongly dislike adult Canada Geese. Wonder how evolution led to such preposterous behaviour. Maybe equally ridiculous in humans, just superficially more subtle there, superficially a little less annoying, but actually probably equally stupid and disturbing. Would be interesting to know who does most of the honking business, males or females?

Hello Wachtelkönig, this reminds me of my time in Finland, when a flock? of migrating Canadian geese had decided to set up their camp on the bike lane behind our house. For two weeks, noone was able to pass there without literally being torn from their bikes, and sent back by the yelling, honking and hooting gang. When they finally left, the floor was a swamp of goose guano. Very impressive species. But who am I to blame evolution?
From what I remember I would say that the noise production is equally shared between the male and the female. I could be wrong though, it has been a while since.

@silvapunkt: stimmt..."der" Punkt :-) Re.Nerven: Nun ja...ich arbeite nicht Vollzeit in dem Beruf und kann mich immer zwischendurch mal erholen ;-)

@snowflake: bei den beschriebenen Kindern ist es nicht unbedingt zeitlich abhängig, ob sie wild sind, oder nicht. Sie haben selbst angekündigt, dass sie immer so sind, und ganz augenzwickernd angemerkt, dass sie "einen schlechten Ruf" bekommen! Eigentlich ist es traurig, weil diese 10-11 jährigen gerade dabei sind, ihre Zukunft zu versauen. Auch wenn sie nächstes Jahr oder in zwei Jahren einsehen, dass sie in der Schule aufpassen und mitarbeiten sollen, haben sie so viel (Basis)Stoff verpasst, dass es kaum möglich sein wird, alles wieder aufzuholen. *frust*

@judex: danke für den Tipp - reichen auch die Unterlagen vom Krankenhaus? Sie hat aber wirklich nur einige Kratzen...meinst du, sie würde wirklich Schadensersatz bekommen? Noch mehr Bürokratie ...:-(

Re "Totmanntaste" (or "Totmannknopf"): as long as one keeps pushing that button in regular intervals, one is presumed alive. If it's no longer being pushed, one is presumed incapacitated. In the case of a train, it would then stop automatically.

A similar mechanism is the Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) used by firefighters in the US that sounds a shrill audio alarm if a firefighter stops moving or does not reset the device in regular intervals. Many probably remember the sound made by hundreds of these devices after the collapse of the twin towers on 9/11.

Hallo Steve! Mit der fortschreitenden modernen Technologie gibt es so viele Möglichkeiten, das kann ich dir aus Erfahrung sagen. Meinem Vater ging es schlecht, so meinten die Ärzte nach seiner by-pass surgery, aber er hat 20 Jahre gesund gelebt. Ist aber sehr sorgfältig mit jedem und mit allem umgegangen. One stops taking anything or anybody for granted. Living in a city like Delhi, one could 'kick the bucket' even while crossing a crowded street, Steve. (not joking, you can't imagine how chaotic the traffic can get. Hier is ja ganz schön was los, am Montaschmorschen.

I am not such a garden maniac. Judica cuts the boxwood and I have to clean afterwards :-) I confess using a Laubsauger to get all the tiny bits of Boxwood. Last year we covered all of the garden with Rindenmulch so there aren't too many weeds. Every pot some plants in the garden are watered automatically and fertilised from one point. I just have to keep the system going. We dont have any lawn because we hate mowing, instead ther is a 8 m² pond in the middle of the garden.

Heute waren wir in wi-chanstadt...in der Klinik mit Suzitochter und die Logopädin fragte, warum sie überhaupt da sei. Tja, die Kommunikation zwischen Ärztin und Logopädin hapert ein wenig aber es hieß, sie würde mit "ihrem Problem" gut umgehen. Sie hat eine sehr kurze Merkfähigkeit - sie muss eben doppelt so viel arbeiten wie andere Kinder aber dann weiß sie für's Leben!

Mass production is another interesting topic in book studies, so nothing against it! And the 19th century still printed with metal types. Run your finger over the pages, I just love that feeling, the imprint the letter leaves on the paper! Unfortunately, the paper of that time was rather bad, too much groundwood, they turn yellow and get brittle too soon. So if you got hold of a well-preserved copy, congratulations!

Wi-chan-City is the one completely without airport in range of sight from judex-city, but being another Bundesland, by the way.

That's why I suggested pasta, Flöckeli, they are such a great "mix-everything-and-call-it-sauce" dish! (I am a bit worried that you found "strange mushrooms" in your fridge, though.)

It were dried Shitake maushrooms. But I'm never sure how to prepare them.
I usually soak them in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes and then cook them in the sauce.

@wi-chan: 19th-century paper looks pretty good to me. My evidence is anecdotal of course: two volumes of English translations of Heine's poetry from 1861 and 1876, respectively. Other than for some mild foxing, the paper is in good shape and not brittle at all. However I have found that paper from the early 20th century does worse (several books from the 1900-1930 time frame). The worst ageing I have seen is in East German publications published in the 1970s. The paper has turned a brownish yellow after not even 40 years. Too much acid in the paper, and poor quality wood pulp?

Norbert, a lecturer who was doing a seminar on the history of paper mentioned it once that, exactly due to the high amount of (acidic) bleach and wood pulp in the paper, 19th century books are sometimes in a worse state than 16th century ones. What I know about the early 20th century is that books with adhesive binding are by and large unuseable now, because they were glued with Hotmelt, a cheap glue that breaks apart after a few years.

Well, I do not think anyone moans for the Landtagsdrucksache from '78, not even (or rather particularly not) the Landtag. Sure, paper quality always differs depending on how much you want to spend on it and how long it is to last (the FAZ is not printed on hand-made rag paper, for example).

Always like to look at old books! (And at new ones, actually, they tell a lot about the owner of the bookshelf, I always think.) And if someone does not own a bookshelf, that is even more telling ...

I just dropped in to leave some basil leaves to nibble. It's the last ones the fellow snails in real life left over from Frau S. plantation. I think they go berserk on smelling basil. Frau S. was not amused, we'll have to cook the pesto Genovese with peppermint leaves.

Our cat Mohrli is still missing - but after speaking to the animal sanctuary, they gave us the number of somenone who has seen him several times during the last few days (he lives about one km away up the Achalm) . Unfortunately, since we have spoken to him, Mohrli hasn't shown up there. But we are pretty sure he is alive and will go on looking for him tomorrow.
We had a lovely holiday, very relaxing and "entschleunigt", I might post a report shortly; too leerhirnig today.
You have been so unsnailish, I haven't been able to read everything. Some new snails seem to have joined the club - welcome!
