    Stephen Fry's latest podgram contains a hilarious tirade against the stupidity of saying double-u double-u double-u as the 'abbreviation' for world wide web, when the former has 9 syllables but the former only 3. He commnends German, among other languages, for having a one-syllable letter for 'w', and suggests that we replace double-u with 'wuh', as in 'wuhwuhwuh'.

    Why has something so patently awkward to say caught on? Is there any hope of being able to change it? And has there already been a thread on this subject that eludes me in the search function?

    Surely most people just omit the "www" when reading out web addresses nowadays? Modern browsers don't even require you to type it in.

    And isn't there also the pronunciation "ue" (sorry, can type it) for "w" - as seen in "Fish Called Wanda"?

    Ah, that's a very pragmatic reason why it doesn't need to change. Maybe you should tell Mr Fry about this because he really was very narked about the whole matter.

    Naja, "www" ist eben - bezogen auf eine URL - etwas anderes als "world wide web", wenn ich z.B. "worldwideweb dot leo dot org" sage, würden das manche genau so tippen. "Wuhwuhwuh" o.dgl. wäre da für URLs schon sinnvoller - "vu-vu-vu" sagen übrigens die Italiener, denen "vu doppia vu doppia vu doppia" wohl auch zu umständlich ist....

    A lot of people working in the Internet industry, at least here in and around Silicon Valley, say "dub-dub-dub".

    Seit ich Internet benutze wundere ich mich, dass sich das double-u-double-u-double-u durchgesetzt hat und nie jemand eine aussprachefreundlichere Bezeichnung erfunden hat.

    Das umständliche double..... ist wahrscheinlich der Grund, warum sich - in diesem fast schon Ausnahmefall - auf deutsch die deutsche Bezeichnung www durchgesetzt hat.
