    to eat s.o. out #36

    Kommentar
The thirty-six officers problem is a mathematical puzzle proposed by Leonhard Euler in 1782.

The problem asks if it is possible to arrange 6 regiments consisting of 6 officers each of different ranks in a 6 × 6 square so that no rank or regiment will be repeated in any row or column. Such an arrangement would form a Graeco-Latin square. Euler correctly conjectured there was no solution to this problem, and Gaston Tarry proved this in 1901;[3] but the problem has led to important work in combinatorics.

Besides the 6 by 6 case the only other case where the equivalent problem has no solution is the 2 by 2 case, i.e. when there are 4 officers.

We usually don't talk about Maths here, but I found that one interesting..
What we actually are talking about is flowers, reptiles, our favorite TV-shows, photography, cats and dogs, weather, alcohol, men and women, coffee, shoes, books..
Sometimes we sing, write poetry, paint.. but most times we just chat about what's on our minds.. Feel free to join us, sit down and enjoy..

Morning Wari and mykl, and all those to come!

Thanks for the nice introduction and opening of this thread. I was not yet aware of the 36-officer problem (my, an entire regiment made up all of officers? How are they going to ACHIEVE anything???).

Isi solution would be to shoot them all and let God sort it/'em out. I wish somebody would leave our office door open, 'cause I'm sweating like a mule again AND I'm only in Jeans shoes and t-shirt (yes, mykl, I DO have underwear about my person, I just usually don't mention it. Morning all ! Nightmare here today as well ! SAP is down !!! I don’t think we can even flush the toilets without it ! This is a little off topic, but I figured I would share this little nugget of information. We have both our cars insured with the ADAC and it is due at the end of the year, I received letters saying they will be taking the money off my account at the end of December 832€ in total, which I consider a lot of money and had heard that it is worth asking the insurance company if any other tariff is available to possibly save a buck or 2 ! I took the letters alone and my hungry 7 year old son (always good to speed things up I find, as any normal shop assistant will want you out of there as quick as poss.) to the ADAC to ask ! Having typed for a couple of minutes the guy turned round and said they have a Comfort tariff which is in fact the same cover as my current one but a little cheaper, the new tariff will now cost me 588€ a year saving me 244€ !!!! Boy was I chuffed and can only suggest that it is defiantly worth asking your insurance company before the end of Nov. if they can do anything, guess this doesn’t apply to you Mykl as if I remember correctly you don’t have a car ! They have fixed the SAP now so I have no excuse not to be working so it´s back to the grind, but hey tomorrow´s Friday !!

Mornin' Vf, I changed insurers a year before I had to give up my car, I told my then company that my new one was 110 Euros cheaper. They answered with "Oh, we can match that" then I was really pissed off with them, it's bad enough that the prices keep rising, but it's pure verarschung to say afterwards "we could offer a better deal, but only if we must" . Enough, enough I don't want to spend all day ranting (even if I could)

VF, that's why I annually check with einsurance.de if there isn't a better tariff around. Interestingly enough, my insurance gets cheaper every year, even in years where my Schadenfreieheitsklasse doesn't improve and Typen- and Regionalklasse get more expensive.

Insurers and banks are all the same kind of gangsters, and he who doesn't change will be gekniffen. (She, also)

Wari, that's nothing new or to be wooried about, I suffer from word blindness a lot when I'm talking English. I'll suddenly realise in the middle of saying sth. that I don't know what the next word/phrase is in English - usually because a German word/phrase "fits" better.

Flies all green 'n buzzin' in his dungeon of despair
Prisoners grumble and piss their clothes and scratch their matted hair
A tiny light from a window hole a hundred yards away
    Is all they ever get to know about the regular life in the day;
An' it stinks so bad the stones been chokin'
    'N weepin' greenish drops
In the room where the giant fire puffer works
    'N the torture never stops
    The torture never stops...

mykl, I didn't get my license until I was 28. My Dad wouldn't sign the learner's permit when I was 15, on the grounds that women do NOT need to drive - they get married, and have NO business behind the wheel. OK, was in a horrible accident at age 17 (sitting in the back seat), and driving terrified me. Then had the "thrill" of being married to a speed freak, but got my license at age 28 and have since lost the knack of sitting on the passenger's side - especially as my son takes after his Dad in that respect, and ONLY that respect, Thank God! Oh well, he'll slow down tomorrow, I hope!!

Isi, It's only easy when you have "standard" toes, as in slanting from largest to smallest, OR when square-toed shoes are in style. I take a size 38, but to fit in standard current style, I'd have to wear 42, which just doesn't work, as they slip and slide :-))

Darn. pressed enter too early, I didn't see the link yesterday due to the fact I didn't have my glasses with me. I was tipping half by guesswork and memory 'cause I can't even see the letters on the keyboard properly without them. The concert on friday was one of the best of the year *sigh, that's a pretty long list this year*. The concert on saturday was at best only so-so, the lead man didn't seem to be putting much effort or enthusiasm into the concert and it lacked "sparkle", this was reflected in those watching. I've seen more excitement at concerts with 80 people than the 250-300 brought on saturday. *shrugs* You can't win them all.

Yep, the "dreaded" play list, with all the stations favourite current songs played to death once an hour every hour. You get a daily/hourly "picture" of who's in and who's out in the music scene.

Yep..it's really hard to find a station that doesn't do that.. Todays favorite is quite good so far.. We just heard Delilah -remember..in summer, it played like every hour or so.. Which was a shame cos I really like it.. A no. 1 hit just with voice and guitar..great! http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=EbJtYqBYCV8

At work, we work in more or less quiet conditions, there are 5 of us 5 telephones and a Betriebsfunk, but even here if it were my choice there would be music in the background.*laughs* A couple of times I have had music in the background (radio/internet radio), but the amount of stress it gives me (from my coworkers) makes it hardly worth the bother.

Hi all ! I can not function at all with out background music, I’m convinced I would develop ear cancer if I had to listen to the other 30 people on the 30 telephones we have here, but unfortunately we are in the cellar and the radio reception is soooo crap I can only pick up SWR3 or the local housewife radio stations ! I’ve tried bringing in my internet radio from home but unfortunately the powers that be won’t give me the WLAN code so it won’t work (the same goes for the Ipod) ! I’m sure the 3 in SWR3 is referring to the amount of times they play the 10 records they have in their collection per hour ! I heard Pink singing “so what” 7 times one day last week.
Another of my pet hates when it comes to SWR3 is the way they conduct their competitions, I’ve followed them closely and have come to the conclusion that you only get a chance to win if you happen to be called Müller, Mayer or Fritz ! You never hear a foreign sounding person get through to them (a fact that can be supported by checking the winner list on their web site !) I have actually put this to them per Email and was assured the names are chosen by their “Zufallsgenerator” ! They must have the worlds first racially prejudiced Zufallsgenerator in that case.
Oh ! must go now they are playing Pink again (time to sing)

Concerning SWR3 - they STILL are my most favourite radio station, despite having turned awfully mainstream after becoming SWR3 instead of SWF3. I only say "Elmar Hörig" - those were the days...but their morning team Zeus/Wirbitzky is one of the best radio moderator combos alive.

I have to throw up when listebning to RPR1, though.

I always manage to get through to them and leave my name and number so that they can supposable phone back (nice trick, as it costs 9cent per call) which of course they never do ! They do a regular competition called Elch und weg where the winners get a 4 day holiday for two somewhere nice (last time Thailand), so I won’t mind winning, but I’m not changing my name to have a fighting chance! Sod´em I’m of in two hours to see The Residents play in Ulm (weather permitting, last night was a nightmare and it’s a 150km round trip) so they can play Pink all damn night as far as I´m concerned :-)@Derfel " but their morning team Zeus/Wirbitzky is one of the best radio moderator combos alive" sorry I have to disagree with you, they are OK but, check out Kevin and Bean on the morning show at KROQ (109FM) from LA they knock spots off them IMO :-)

we went to Dortmunds christmas market on saturday, but it was so full that it wasn't a lot of fun. You couldn't stop to look at anything without throwing an anchor out first. The crowds just pushed/dragged you along whether you wanted to or not. It took us a good 20 minutes to fight our way through to one of the Glühwein stalls and after about 3 hours we still hadn't been round the circuit once (and not because it's so big) and we left. On sunday I was working on Unna christmas market, helping out the Evangelish Church with one of it's stalls, they can't afford to pay anyone so it's a case of volunteers one step forward.*gg* At least that wasn't as hectic as saturday and we managed to have a laugh or two as well.*sigh* It was however hard work finding sth. to drink without alcohol or 70 % sugar, and I nearly cried with joy when one of the stall owners said I could share her flask of Earl Grey tea. A busy weekend, no music, but it was still OK.

Hey Wari, My daughter and her Lebensgefährter were at Pferd und Jagd on Sunday! They had wanted to take honey-bun (my granddaughter) along, but then her father called to ask whether she wanted to go to the "Hunde-Messe" in Kassel. Honey-bun asked: Mommy, what's farther away? And opted for the closest :-)

mykl, Helping out at the stalls is FUN, though :-)) The Woodstock tickets haven't yet arrived from the printers, BUT I've reserved four - a ticket only cost 9 euros! They're going to start having live music every first Saturday of a given month.

My son called earlier to say he had just heard about the 240 layoffs on the radio news broadcast. And I just now heard that HR TV is here to report on our troubles.

Wegen die Ehe hierher, und die Scheidung geblieben.

When I first started my new job, I told you all that I had re-connected with a long-lost friend. She most likely will soon be joining us - needs to brush up on her English, and I've told her about what a nice bunch of friends you all are. Think she might pop in as "Biggi" :-)

We knew each other way back when I was still supporting two children by working as a free-lance waitress at a local pub. She was one of my guests - interjection from Biggi "one of my THIRSTY" guests. Then we lost sight of each other, until this August. She's worked here for 40 years, and is now threatened with layoff - would like some emotional support, and needs to practice her "eingerostetes" English (her words, not mine) :-)) She doesn't mind being corrected, mykl :-))

Good morning people, a very happy tuesday to one and all. I had to depart in a rush yesterday as the time caught up with me. I had just time to be happy that Isi showed up and my co worker was standing behind me and he already had his coat and hat on. Isi, no, you didn't sound desperate and it's only normal to want a partner , man (as a species) is a social creature that doesn't thrive very well on its own. My cynical attitude is one based on a lot of disappointment, but here too I must have a little of the blame - I chose the ones that caused me so much pain. You too will find your "Deckel" and taking the first because he/she's the first isn't always the best answer. I feel many people are casualties of the "modern" day thinking that even up to the age of whatever you have to be fit, slim and have a face that could honour the front page of Vogue magazine. The character of a persión has moved down to third or fourth place in favour of the shallow attituides of beauty and with this sort of mentality in favour at the moment the only winners will be the cosmetic surgeons and divorce lawyers.

Well, Easy, I would recommend myself, however I guess my wife wouldn't be all too happy about that ;-) But I'm a firm believer of the Topf-and-Deckel theory. Heck, I know people who managed to procreate who I never thought anybody would touch with a set of tongs applied to a very long pole in a powerless mine at night.

((On a sidenote - we had a class reunion last year and the organizers provided little nametags with checkboxes: Married - Children - Residence, and one former classmate actually stated "There's a checkbox missing" "Really? Which one?" "Divorced." And no one ever thought HE'd get married at all))

Well, Carly, let me know it's not THAT easy ;-)
You have to take into account not only your own personal assets like looks, bank account, brains, personality, age and so on and your expectations of a potential partner (see above), but your regional preconditions aswell.

It should be easier to find someone matching in the so called single-capitals (which if I remember correctly currently are Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt/M.) than in some secluded Siegerland-Valleys (just an example ;-) where 86% of the male population might be sheep (I mean the wooly kind). So, a quite complicated formula with lots and lots of variables..
