    to eat so. out - No. 37

    Kommentar
    37 is the natural number following 36 and preceding 38

    In mathematics it is a prime number, the fifth lucky prime, the first irregular prime, the third unique prime and the third cuban prime of the form

    It is a factor of all 3-digit base 10 repdigits, such as 111. 37 is the smallest prime that is not also a supersingular prime. It is a centered hexagonal number and a star number.

    37 and 38 are the first pair of consecutive positive integers not divisible by any of their digits.

    Every positive integer is the sum of at most 37 fifth powers (see Waring's problem).

    37 appears in the Padovan sequence, preceded by the terms 16, 21, and 28 (it is the sum of the first two of these).

    Since the greatest prime factor of 372 + 1 = 1370 is 137, which is obviously more than 37 twice, 37 is a Størmer number.

    37 is the only two digit number whose product, when multiplied twice, subtracted by one, and then read backwards, equals the original two digit number: 37x2=74-1=73, 73 backwards is 37

    Furthermore, 37 is the atomic number of Rubidium.

    We came from here: Siehe auch: to eat s.o. out #36 and will - Gods willing - continue for quite some time...

    Due to recent misunderstandings, here for clarification: "Waring's problem" does not refer in any way to fellow eater-outer-over-under Waringham, but to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waring%27s_problem

    Strange. I can read and understand every word here, but I don't understand what the sum of the words is...
    ...even when I muliply the number of words by the prime Padovan and subtract the Størmer consecutive integers.

    Derfel, Thanks for the new thread - and if you understand all you wrote, well then, mathematically finding the perfect partner for everyone not already taken, should be a snap - which reminds me - do you happen to watch "Numb3ers" :-)) And if so, do you identify with Charlie :-)) Nope, taking that back - he's not married.

    Nah, Carly, I'm not a mathematical genius. Some of it I get, some of it I don't - and incidentally yes, I do watch Numb3rs (or did, when it was still aired). However, I didn't identify with Charlie - and I must admit that the black-haired lady (what's her name again?) for me always will be Theresa from 'The OC', so her role in Numb3rs didn't match what I had in mind LOL

    Derfel, Numb3ers comes on right after "Abby" on Sundays :-) I forget what her name is, but even though I don't half follow what he's saying, I still watch :-) In a couple of episodes, someone had dug out an article he had written way back when, and he developed the formula into a best-seller book on how to mathematically determine soulmates, partners, ect :-)

    Regarding the "Topf-and-Deckel"-theme I found the following prayer of a woman and the prayer of a man:

    Gebet der Frau:
    Müde bin ich, geh zur Ruh,
    mache meine Augen zu.
    Lieber Gott bevor ich schlaf,
    bitte ich Dich noch um was.
    Schick mir mal 'nen netten Mann,

    Mornin' mykl, and all the other folks!

    PTerry booksvie...hm...I heard of those, though never watched one. And honestly, I cannot imagine how that's going to turn out. Partly because of my faible for the Corgi-editions (cover illustrations by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Kirby), discworld personae and places for me always have a cartoony character. So, if say Rincewind all of a sudden looked like an actual human - hm, just doesn't fit my imagination.

    But then, I never imagined anyone could make a movie out of LOTR, and still Jackson did it and didn't fail miserably as I expected. However, LOTR for me always was 'real', not cartoony. Um. Was that a unch of garble-warble, or did anyone catch my meaning?

    *chuckle* Mornin' Derfel, I think you got your meaning across, even if you're typing on a Japanese language keyboard whilst wearing boxing gloves. I've never imagined Discworld as cartoony so I don't have that problem, but I'm still reluctant to watch the books as films, 'cause reading the book again afterwards is nigh on impossible.

    Oh PLEASE, mykl, no jokes about Japanese keyboards. We currently have a Japanese intern, who brought his own computer. As I tamper in our company's IT network, my boss said "Hey can you give him network access and suchlike?" And I said "Sure, no problem at all." That was before I knew that he had a Japanese Windows Vista as OS on his notebook GAH!

    Not only have I not gotten used to Vista yet (nor like it very much), but my Japanese is as non-existent as his German AND his English is...to put it politely...rudimentary.

    On an interesting sidenote - did you know that in a Japanese OS from Windows, everything is written in Japanese - apart from Microsoft, Windows, Vista and Office?

    It's freezing cold up here, we had black ice (had to look that one up, I have to admit) this morning.. Now the sun is out and trying to melt the frost.. Which makes me think of a wonderful poem by Robert Frost again..I know I've posted that one before, but as it is my favorite, here it comes once again:

    I'm afraid I was spoiled earlier in life. About 30 odd years ago I lived in Reading (south England), there was a "burger" shop, but you could watch the whole process through glass. He ground his own beef (with nothing added), the farm products were all labelled with the names of the local farms they came from, baked his own bread rolls as well and made his own tomato relish (without sugar) for the dressing *sigh*. We would stand there in the queue smiling as we waited to be served, now THAT was a burger. Nowadays the only burger I'll eat is one that I've made myself.

    Well, it's all according to wether you believe in what my Personalausweis or my Reisepass states. Problem is, I haven't been measured 'officially' in I have no idea how long, and these two documents give this choice of heights for me.

    Plus, it's a fact that during the course of a day, you loose hight due to the compression of the Bandscheiben. They extend again during a good nights sleep, so the standard world citizen is a bit taller in the morning than in the evening (if he spent his day either standing or sitting).

    Don't ever worry about what your eating, that's not the problem. The problem is as always CALORIES. Calories are very small kobold like beings that live primeraly in cupboards and drawers, there main occupation is sewing extra seams into clothing so that they become increasingly tighter. I've got the proof as well, the older my clothing is in the cupboard the more it doesn't fit me anymore. There is no known way of killing calories or loosening the clothing that they've buggered up.

    Derfel, I'm a non-believer on the subject of what used to be called "Klimaerwärmung" and has now been changed to "Klimawandelung" - in the early 70s, scientists were predicting the next Ice Age, and oil was supposed to have been used up by now - it's a money-making scheme, to my mind. Back then, they said "Kaufe Diesel-Autos" der Umwelt zu liebe"...no sooner had most of us switched to Diesel, than they "discovered" Rußpartikel and hiked KfZ-Steuer to no end. Now they're trying the same cute little trick out for "heize mit Holz der Umwelt zu liebe" - and lo and behold, right...Rußpartikel needing new expensive filters.

    Carly, I figure the theme of Klimawandel is one we could discuss for several threads, and neither of us would probably be able to convince the other.

    However, two things I nevertheless would like to say to that - just recently, there was a quite good TV show (on ZDF I think) about the Arctic. One of the topics was the speed of glaciers melting, and how it has increased the last couple of years (not decades).

    And the other things is: of course there are people making money out of this (no matter what, there always will be people making money out of ANYTHING) - but honestly, do you think that's the same people who were the original ones to warn about the Klimawandel?

    I do not want to discuss this any more, for we will not reach a conclusion, and I know that discussions like that tend to get emotional rather quickly. Let's not go there...

    My 2 cents (why is it 2 cents btw?) on climate change:
    The climate has always been changing, otherwise we'd still be amoebic colitis swimming in hot water..
    It is obvious that this climate change is driven or strengthened by human influence. And it will happen. Question is when and how, and scientist won't be able to tell the exact date until it's there. The face of the Earth will thereby change and some species (animal or plant, whatever) will die out during that event and others will flourish.. That's part of evolution. Has always been. Will always be. There's no way of stopping it or even slowing it down. We can only try to survive and live with the consequences. And we can try to rescue others. But we won't be able to prevent it.

    If any of you have money to spent on scientific research, I can provide my bank account..

Guess they just haven't uncovered all the ruins of the flourishing industries back then.

    Thanks mykl..didn't know that..about the 2 cents I mean.. Knew that part about the female art of changing opinions..

    Carly..that's why real scientist ought to speak of climate change and not global warming.. Whatever is going to happen (as we are on the way into another ice age), it will not affect the entire globe in the same way.. Some regions will experience droughts and wildfires, others floods and landslides.
    What can actually be observed is that the weather is more unstable in the recent years. And there are a little more extreme events like floods, thunderstorms and hurricanes and the like. We feel like it's a lot more, but that's due to better(or focused) news coverage.

    We feel like it's a lot more, but that's due to better(or focused) news coverage.

    Or due to the fact that I spend nights like Kyrill or Emma or what's-all-their-names in the open, clearing the streets off trees, hoardings, tiles, billboards etc. and pumping floods out of peoples cellars ;-)

    That's focused news coverage - again. it's the same when there is a train/airplane crash, for two weeks afterwards all you hear about is further train/airplane crashes around the world. I rarely watch the international news anymore it's just too depressing.

    Exactly, Wari - I just get sick of hearing "to save the climate, we are going to charge you more for this that and the other, raise taxes, ect." when the environment has always been in change. And, the weather has been rather extreme in the sense of storms, floods, ect., but that too, has always been the case - and you've already stated why :-)) Beat me to it!

    That's correct, Wari - I'm a voluntary firefighter. I took the St Martin bonfire and hot fire training (and other trainingm but these are the best) ones myself, the bushfire pictures are from my town, however were taken by a professional photographer I'm acquainted to since my newspaper times. He allowed me to put them up there, and of course I gave him credit for his work.

    Derfel, Mine do NOT flash, but are "bunt" :-)) Which once again goes to show that what people prefer is firmly rooted in their upbringing (as in culture/tradition). My family gathered around a Christmas tree decorated with colored lights and all the beautiful balls collected over the years, a touch of tinsel, candy canes, topped with a star, the manager set out, on and on...you felt so safe, sound and loved...and when you have children of your own, your heart's desire is to pass on traditions expressing the same love you felt when you were a child.

    BTW: christmas trees causing fires in homes are not as often as you might think (at least, not around here)I've had a couple of burning Adventskränze in my time as a firefighter (12 years now), but not a single tree yet. *knocks on wood*

    Carly, I like Candy Canes, though we never had any on our trees :)

    I love lights, but white (well. yellowish, i supppose) ones, and real candles. And I love huge shining glass balls, that look like soap bubbles (if that's a word), and we've never had those, either.
    But I agree, it's usually what you've been brought up with. And coloured FLASHING lights are the worst! How can people stand those things on their windows? I'd get a migrane, and eventually turn murderess, I think... :)
    We usually have real and fake (electric) candles on our tree. But with the cats we really have to be careful with burning candles. And glassy ornaments, and other breakables... and a tree, come to think of it *g*

I'd already lost the google word search function on my computer 'cause he'd installed another version of google that we can't now get rid of.[ NEVER change a running system.] He says it's nothing to do with him, but everything worked on thursday before I had my day off. gggrrrrr, maybe it wasn't, but I'm by nature misstrauisch

    Jep..Schrottwichteln..bin sehr gespannt, habe ich noch nie gemacht..
    Hier ein tolles Gedicht, das Dan für den neuen Darcy-Faden benutzt hat:

    IF-

    If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
    And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
    If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'
    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    ' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
    if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
    And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son
    (Rudyard Kipling)

    Carly, sad but true. If only they would bear the risk themselves they put everybody else in. Their outrageous salaries are justified by them "bearing the responsibility", but if they botch the job, they get the golden handshake and move on, while hundreds or thousands of jobs perish in their wake. Where exactly is the reponsibility they have?
