    Vielen Dank, wi-chan. Sehr schöne Hochlichter.

    Ich habe gerade ein paar Webcambilder angeschaut - hier zum Beispiel http://www.schliersbergalm.de/radiokam/kamera.htm - und beneide die Schneebegünstigten unter euch. Letztes Wochenende hat es hier auch ein kleines bisschen geschneit. Der Schnee ist aber innerhalb eines Tages geschmolzen.

    re starting to make christmas cards in August:
    I can't tell you how many times I have had the resolution to do this, but it simply doesn't work. Christmas cards refuse to be made in August, I can assure you.

    We have quite a lot of snow, the garden looks beautiful. We put up the bird feeder and a few fat balls for the tits, but they haven't discovered them yet.

    Ich nehme mir auch jedes Jahr vor, einige Vorbereitungen auf Weihnachten früh oder zumindest rechtzeitig zu erledigen, und jedes Jahr muss ich das super-teure Priority-Porto für die PAkete für meine Familie zahlen, weil ich nicht einmal das auf die Reihe kriege... *seufz*

    Vielen Dank wi-chan :-)...das war wirklich knapp!

    Nur noch 4 Tage Arbeit und dann Ferien :-) *hechel* Heute habe ich gerade eine "Xmas Party" mit 5. Klässlern veranstaltet - leider ohne Crackers aber dafür haben sie "Pass the Parcel" und "Musical statues" gespielt.

    @goldammer: "Pass the Parcel" - Es gibt einen Preis und er wird x-Mal eingepackt - bestimmt 20 Mal - und auf der Schicht klebte ich entweder einen Bonbon oder eine Aufgabe/Rätsel (auf Englisch): "What is the time now?"/"Hop 10 times on one foot"/"Tell a joke"/"Sing a Christmas song" etc. Das Päckchen wird von Kind zu Kind gereicht, und wenn die Musik aufhört, muss das Kind mit dem Päckchen eine Schicht Papier entfernen und die Aufgabe lösen. Das Kind, das das Päckchen zum Schluss in der Hand hat, hat den Preis auch gewonnen. Es gibt es auch ohne Aufgaben, aber im Unterricht war es eine gute Gelegenheit einige Sachen spielerisch abzufragen.
    "Musical Statues" - das Spiel gibt es auch auf Deutsch - Die Kinder tanzen, und wenn die Musik aufhört, müssen sie ganz still stehen. Wer sich bewegt, ist dann draussen. Das Spiel war nur für die letzten fünf Minuten, damit sie nicht anfingen das Klassenzimmer auseinander zu nehmen ;-)

    Hi everybody,

    I know the game Musical Statues from my own childhood. Some games are just persistent.

    I sit down every year to write about 50 X-mas cards usually decorated with a brandnew picture of the family. That is a difficult thing because we don't get together to take the photo in time.
    I'm very glad that the DM-Market offers on-site photo-printing now.

    I have another full week to work. I don't mind working, but I feel worn out and ready for a holiday.
    I just looked up 'urlaubsreif' and the translation doesn't really fit at least not to my ears. Any suggestions?

    suziq aha, that one. I know this game in the form that you have to unwrap the next layer with a knife and fork, and wearing gloves, a woolen hat and scarf - and when the next person gets the parcel (we played it not with music that stops but with dice, and who has a 6 gets passed the parcel), you have to hand over hat, scarf and gloves, and this person has to put it all on before starting to get to the next layer (with knife and fork, of course). Nice idea to combine it with English tasks!

    Goldammer, I know that game, too, but with a bar of chocolate! And you have to unwrap and eat as fast as you can (with knife and fork, as you said), because while you are eating, the others will try to roll a six to take it away from you, get the cutlery and start eating yourself!

    Well, uke, that's how different things can be - I can hardly wait starting to work next year! ;-) So we both have something to look forward to.

    Hello! Where's hexlein? It is snowing! Please download the stuff!

    I know the mentioned game in this version:
    A bar of chocolate is enwrapped in several layers of newspaper. The person can only use knife an fork, and has to wear a scarf and a cap, and can work on the thing (and eat, if possible) until someone rolls a six, who will then proceed (all participants execpt the one currently getting to the chocolate play dice).

    Du magst notiert haben, dass ich nicht exakt der Welt teuerste Korrespondent bin. Auf unnummerierten Okkasionen wollte ich Dir ein paar Linien schreiben, aber invariabel ist etwas aufgedreht und hat einen Spanner in die Werke geschmissen. Jetzt, wo ich zuletzt gemanagt habe, Feder zu Papier zu setzen, ist Weihnachten schon auf der Türstufe.
    Sprechend von welchem, warum auf Erden ist Weihnachten für Euch so eine seriöse Affäre?
    Wir Englische sind in dieser Saison voll von dem Spiritus von Gutenwillen zu allen Männern und wissen sicherlich, wie uns zu genießen. Die Dekorationen sind auf, der plastische Weihnachtsbaum ist in Position, und ich sehe vorwärts zu unserer Büropartei dieses Jahr...

    @wi-chan "to throw a spanner in the works" bedeutet irgendwas zum Stillstand zu bringen. "Spanner" ist ein Maulschlüssel und wenn man so ein Teil in eine Maschine schmeißt, dann geht einiges kaputt! Ich schätze das Wortspiel "Spanner/Voyeur" ist das Lustige.

    Spanner ist also the German name of a moth family, the Geometridae. You probably now the conspicuous caterpillars, the inchworms.

    … Letzte Zeit war es ein Koffer von gemischten Fortünen. Ich versuchte, Vorteil zu nehmen von der raren Opportunität und hing um den Mistelzeh herum, wartend auf einen jungen Sekretär zu küssen mich. In eitel. Nach halb einer Stunde hatte ich einzugeben – die Mädchen waren zu beschäftigt, versuchend das Auge des Chefs zu fangen, und ich war links mit Ei auf meinem Gesicht. Aber: einmal gebissen, zweimal scheu. Diese Zeit rund will ich warten, bis ein Mädchen unter dem Mistelzeh steht, und dann will ich sie bei Überraschung nehmen. Was für ein Prospekt!
    Weihnachten nimmt mich immer zurück die Memoriengasse herunter. Ich erinnere die Weihnachtskarolinen – Rudolf, das rotgenaste Regentier, Dschingel-Glocken, etc. Wir haben für Vater Weihnachten immer ein Glas Whisky im Lebensraum gelassen, so dass er sich nach dem langen Trip von der Nordstange wiederfrischen konnte. Er brachte uns ein paar Süße, und wir haben uns wie Punsch gefreut...

    Mit Bezug auf Weihnachtskarten: Was ist denn am August so besonders? Ich kenne viele (mich eingeschlossen), die sich vornehmen, ihre Weihnachtskarten im August zu schreiben. Keiner scheint aber auf den Gedanken zu kommen, schon im Juli oder vielleicht im September damit anzufangen. Wieso nicht?

    Also Weihnachten habe ich schon gefeiert und zwar heute im Geschäft. Ein schönes Essen hat's gegeben, Dekorationen, einen plastischen Weihnachtsbaum und mehrere Frosty die Schneemänner auch, aber leider keinen Mistelzeh. Gesungen haben wir zum Glück nicht, obwohl Dschingel-Glocken etc. als musikalische Kulisse beim Essen dienten. Es war eine sehr nette Büropartei. Bis 13h hatten wir das Alles über die Bühne gebracht und konnten früh nach Hause fahren, was ja noch schöner war.

    I don't know why August - I guess for me, August is the "mother-of-all no-christmas-card months"! (are those hyphens correct?)

    I'm feeling quite knackered today (Tensomatic ok? It seems to be a bit unreliable at times. I'm thinking of handing it in as a case of warranty).
    Remember I told you about the opening of the headstone in our parish community center which is to undergo a major reconstruction?
    Well, right now we are in the phase of taking out all the old rubbish, like wooden paneling and ceilings, fitted carpets, demounting of old wardrobes, demolishing tiles in the old kitchen and so on. Members of the parish are asked to come and help - it saves money in two ways: first, we don't need to pay for workers to do these things, and second, for every hour of internal labour (Eigenleistung) we get an allowance from the church administration.
    But I'm not used to hard physical labour, I noticed. Three hours of working there did me in completely...although it was a lot of fun!
    Demolishing an old wall with the big sledgehammer - uga uga! Very satisfying, somehow.
    Originally I had planned to go again today, but I've just decided that I'll stick to my housewifely activities today and make more Brötle, and maybe go there once more next weekend...

    Logischerweise müsste es so stimmen (adjectival phrases, oder?), nur ... kann ich kein Beispiel von mother of all mit Bindestrichen finden. Der Nobelpreisträger Paul Krugman, zum Beispiel, schreibt: the mother of all currency crises. Also frage ich mich: Wird mother of all nicht als adjectival phrase betrachtet oder hat das eher mit unserem Abscheu vor Bindestrichen zu tun, der uns dazu verleitet, bei gut "eingefahrenen" (ich bin mit der Sprache so frei) Ausdrücken auf Bindestriche zu verzichten.

    Hallo candice! Ich glaube nicht, dass du die Zeitzonen durcheinander bringst (muss ich das jetzt auseinander schreiben?). Ich stehe immer früher auf. Ich weiß nicht warum. Absicht ist es bestimmt nicht. Heute ist es aber gut so, denn ich habe einiges zu erledigen. Wie sieht's mit dem Schnee aus?

    I even went to the Christmas market with my daughter yesterday, and I enjoyed it very much, especially since we have been fighting so much recently (puberty!). She has been grounded for one week (Yes, I know, I am a "Rabenmutter"...), so it was a real treat for both of us. Just the two of us, with my adolescent daughter almost as tall as me - it was a real ladies´ outing and a good opportunity to make up again...

    But now back to the "Spiritus von Gutenwillen"

    Aber zurück zum Präsent. Ich habe schon so viele Weihnachtskarten, dass sie keinen Raum mehr auf dem Mantelstück haben; jetzt werde ich sie an den Mauern erhängen müssen. Ich kann einfach nicht unterstehen, warum Ihr diesen Zoll noch nicht adoptiert habt – es addiert doch zu der Atmosphäre.
    Die Präparationen für Weihnachtsdiner sind noch unterwegs. Ich habe gefragt, sechs Leute zu kommen, und wundere jetzt, ob eine gestopfte Türkei rundgehen wird. Dazu gibt es natürlich gerostete Kartoffeln, Brüsseler Sprießen und Yorkshire Pudding – nicht verworren zu werden mit dem Weihnachtspudding, den es nach dem Hauptkurs gibt, mit Hafen um ihn runterzuwaschen...

    @Goldammer: Dass du internal labour von LEO hast, hatte ich schon vermutet. LEO bietet mehrere Vorschläge, wovon meiner Meinung nach keiner im vorliegenden Fall gut passt - nicht aber weil ich heute besonders aufmüpfig bin ;-).
    Ich hätte mich genauer ausdrücken sollen: "Internal labour" kenne ich nur als Fachbegriff aus der Wirtschaftswissenschaft (labour-market segmentation usw.) aber nicht als alltäglichlichen Begriff. Ich gehen davon aus, dass Eigenleistung dagegen sowohl ein Fachbegriff als auch ein normaler allgemein verständlicher Begriff ist. Vielleicht wolltest du auch speziell den Fachbegriff verwenden.

    Ach candice, wie schön - wolltest du nicht mit? In Oberjoch war ich leider nie.
    Schön auch, das euer Weihnachtsmarktausflug Spaß gemacht hat.

    Sehr gut, bitte weiter mit dem Brief. (Ich habe über Hafen schwer nachdenken müssen.)

    Ouch! You have definitely touched a sore spot here... I would have loved to go but I´m still trying to catch up with all the work that didn´t get done during my illness. ("didn´t get done" sounds strange... Is it OK?)

    @Goldammer - you seem to understand me very well... :-) Do you only have a son / sons?

    Good morning snowflake! You remind me of one of my friends who used to come home from school totally exhausted, and slept the whole afternoon. She got up again around 6 or 7 p.m., and at midnight she was not tired enough to go to bed, so she stayed up until 2 or 3. The next morning she was dead tired, of course, and had to take a long nap in the afternoon, and so on...

    Re Eigenleistung: Das, was Goldammer geleistet hat, nennen wir auf gut Amerikanisch "sweat equity". Die anderen Ausdrücke kommen mir sehr fachsprachlich vor.

    @candice: didn't get done in #38 ist goldrichtig. *psst* Goldammer hat einen Ehemann, zwei Söhne und Katzen, aber keine Tochter.

    @Goldammer: Vorsichtig! Falschen Freund gesichtet. In #36 hast du "teeny kids" geschrieben, aber auf Englisch heißt "teeny" nur kitzeklein. Wenn man Teenager meint, muss man entweder "when you are going out with one of your teenagers" oder "with your teenaged son or daughter".

    RE #27: Ich glaube, dass wir einfach einen generellen Abscheu vor Bindestriche haben. "Mother of all" würde ich ohne Bindestrich schreiben.

    Zu der Unzuverlässigkeit der Tensomatic kann ich nur sagen, diese Dinger sind empfindlich, und der Sprung über den großen Teich hat womöglich ihr Schaden hinzugefügt. Obwohl sie gut verpackt war, wurde sie bestimmt gerüttelt. Das vertragen die nicht. Es wird aber behauptet, dass man sie kurz in die Mikrowelle einstecken und kurz erwärmen kann. Irgendwie trocknet das die Sensoren ab, oder so was. Oder hast du das schon probiert?

    Ich habe gestern sehr schöne Reiseprospekte aus dem Allgäu bekommen. Aber ich frage mich, wie kommt es, dass ich solche Sachen so schnell aus Deutschland bekomme, wenn die Bücher, die aus Oregon kommen, immer noch nicht eingetroffen sind. *ungeduldig sei*

    SAT tests: Ich bin zwar nicht vom Fach, habe aber das Alles vor knapp 10 Jahren aus elterlichem Standpunkt beobachtet.
    Soweit ich weiß, macht in dieser Gegend jede(r), der/die studieren will, die SAT-Prüfungen. Anderswo - ich glaube in einigen westlichen Staaten - gibt es eine Alternative (ACT?-Prüfung).
    Es sollen auch einige wenige Universitäten geben, die auf solche Prüfungsergebnisse nicht achten. Die Schüler bewerben sich aber meist bei mehreren Unis, also ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass keine davon auf die Prüfungen Wert legt, eher gering.

    Ob man SAT oder ACT schreibt, hängt sehr stark von dem Wohnort ab. SAT wird bevorzugt an den Küsten und ACT im Mittelwesten. Wenn man im Mittelwesten wohnt und noch nicht sicher ist, wo man studieren möchte, schreibt man oft beide Prüfungen. Das habe ich gemacht, denn manche elitäre Universitäten akzeptierten nur SAT.     Thank you for answering my question, SD3. I´m sure I´ll find a website with some model tests. But foreign students probably wouldn´t have to take them, what do you think? As far as I remember, I didn´t have to take them (back in the olden days...); my reports from Germany seemed to have been enough.

    @Goldammer - you are right, of course, I only read "diese Dinger" in Amy´s sentence, that´s why I thought it should be "ihnen"...

    Wie das bei Studenten aus dem Ausland ist, weiß ich nicht. Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass es vielleicht davon abhängt, ob sie "Austauschstudenten" sind, die schon woanders studieren und dorthin zurückkehren oder aber "normale" Studenten, die hier den Abschluss machen.

    Puhhh, this afternoon was fun again!

    There was quite a lot of snow and he was all jumpy, nevertheless I decided to go for a ride without saddle.
    I went all very well until we cantered through the snow, he then startet bucking and I slid down the horse and landed in the snow.
    Didn't hurt me, but afterwrads I was wet and cold and I had to walk until the next rootstock, as I can't relly climb up without a saddle, I needed to jump up, but he doesn't like that and usually steps aside.

    When I went to UT Texas, I only needed some letters of recommendation, but I think there was a special partnership between my university and UT. TOEFL is well-known around here, and a number of our students take it every year.

    Ja, wenn das eine Partneruniversität ist, braucht man die Prüfungen wahrscheinlich nicht schreiben, aber das ist *6-Gang* ein anderer Kessel Fische, denn oft muss man nur die an der Heimat-Uni erforderlichen Studiengebühren und nicht die wahnsinnig hohen amerikanischen Studiengebühren bezahlen.

    Ich bin erstaunt, wie viele Colleges und Unis beide Prüfungen zulassen. Als ich vor 25 Jahren studierte, war das nicht der Fall. Damals haben die meisten Iowaner die ACT geschrieben. Nur ein Bruchteil der Schüler, die an der Ost- bzw. Westküste vielleicht studieren wollten, haben die SAT geschrieben. Ich bin fast sicher, dass ich beide Prüfungen nicht geschrieben hätte, wenn ich das nicht nötig gehabt hätte. Schließlich kosten sowohl die Prüfungen als auch die Bewerbungen Geld.

    @Goldammer: Fall-O-Matic angesagt. ;-) *aus dem Fenster guck* Nix Schneesturm. Vermutlich ist das im Westen, wo man den berühmten See-Effekt-Schnee bekommt. Oder vielleicht beginnt der Spaß hier gleich. Hmmm. Ich erinnere mich noch dunkel daran, dass das Wetter heute Abend schlimm werden soll, aber da ich nur im Haus sitze, lese, schreibe, Tee trinke und im Internet surfe, macht mir das Wetter nichts aus. Aber ich Österreich hat man Schneefälle von 2 Metern bekommen. Hoffentlich liegen unsere österreichische Freunde nicht irgendwo in Schneewehen.

    @Snowflake: Gestern waren wir in einem Feinkostgeschäft (hier in Michigan, tatsächlich) und man könnte dort Schweizer Spezialitäten kaufen. Wie heißt die Marke noch mal? War das vielleicht Midor? Irgendwo habe ich das mir notiert. 100 gr. Kekse kosteten aber extrem viel, fand ich. Auch der deutsche Lebkuchen war sehr teuer. Oh, ja. Man könnte auch echten Schweizer Käse kaufen. Raclette...ähm...da waren auch verschiedene Sorten. Ich wollte Wein oder Bier für den Wachtelkönig kaufen, aber da kenne ich mich wirklich nicht aus.

    SD3, what do you mean, "bloße Ligatur"? Ligatures are the most interesting characters, I think. Still, the company of capital letters doesn't become our poor ß, in my opinion. It seems at a loss among them. So I will continue to replace it by two s on those rare occasions that I type all-caps words.

    Ein schnelles Hallo von unterwegs (?). Wahrscheinlich kann ich nicht viel nachholen, aber ich empfinde 'mother-of-all' als völlig falsch und habe auch keine Ahnung, was die Bindestriche da sollen.

    Und ich habe auch (von den Leoniden) gelernt, dass man bei großen Buchstaben aufs schöne ß verzichten muss. Nur weiß ich nicht, wie man 'all caps' auf Deutsch sagen soll.

    Ich vermute, 'internal labor' könnte aus dem Perspektiv einer Firma passen, ansonsten sagt es mir gar nichts. Umgangssprachlich würde ich einfach sagen: If we do some of the work ourselves.

    Zu SAT vs. ACT: Ich hätte gesagt, dass der SAT bei weitem am weitest verbreiteten (?) und der ACT eher für community colleges oder kleinere öffentliche Universitäten sei (?), aber mit den Unis der Mittleren Westen kenne ich mich nicht gut aus. (Na, ein paar gute Freunde haben an Grinnell und Carleton studiert, aber ich weiß nicht, was für Prüfungen sie belegen mussten.)

    hm -- us: The technical term for 'all caps' would be 'Versalsatz', but a simple 'Großbuchstaben' (including our beloved ligature again!) would be more common ('große Buchstaben' simply means large letters).

    all caps = Kapitälchen.

    Blockschrift does not mean that all letters are capitals.

    Sweat equity is wide spread when it comes to building a house. If you can make something by yourself, e.g. decorating the walls or tiling or something else the required credit is lower which minimizes the whole sum and the monthly instalment.

    What we have here in the yellow boxes is Blockschrift, the opposite would be Schreibschrift. THIS IS ALL CAPS. Alles in Großbuchstaben. wi-chan is right, too. There are fonts which shows the caps in a bigger shape than the small letters but all in caps.

    Uh-oh! Was sehe ich denn da? Ein Fettnäpfchen?
    Ich habe überhaupt nichts gegen Ligaturen. Ich habe lediglich darauf hingewiesen, dass diejenigen, die das ß aus der Welt reformieren wollen, es nicht als Buchstabe anerkennen. Sie behaupten, das Eszett sei eine "bloße" Ligatur und gehöre deshalb nicht ins Alphabet.
    Ich dagegen habe ein Faible für das ß - sowohl klein also auch groß geschrieben.
    Übrigens: Wieviele Buchstaben enthält das deutsche Alphabet? 26, 27 oder 30?

    Ob es in allen Staaten einheitlich ist, weiß ich nicht. Hier in der Gegend muss man z.B. gegen die Kinderkrankheiten (Masern, Mumps, usw.), Poliomyelitis, Meningitis geimpft werden, um studieren zu können.

    Tip: Drink LOADS of freshwater.
    Eat something healthy and sugary. Strawberries or so. Make sure the alcohol is gone before you throw in meds to drive away the headache.

    If I drink, I usually take a glass of water to bed, alcohol seems to have an extremly dehydrating effect on me.

    I'm still planning and above all trying to persuade my parents that going all alone somewhere where I don't know anybody, not even a Leo, is exactly what I need. I need rest and peace and isolation.
    "Come on, you can have a peaceful time at home, too." No, I can't. Unless you resign swisscom, murder the neighbours, take the cats with you and leave the house. ;-)

    I actually want to go on an island or anywhere, I actually don't care much as long as it's cheap;-)

    Goose Island is a brewery business in Chicago, and IPA a type of beer with hoppy and bitter taste. I like it, although I drink much less beer in winter. And since there is no reasonable recycling of glass I prefer to drink wine, since I am running out of storage room for empty bottles. I am still busy with getting through the operating manuals of the camera and some other things, but I hope with the Popeil Pocket Beer Bottle Recycler the problem will finally be solved.

    Good night, Amy-MiMi! I will be around until (including) Christmas Eve. Leaving on 23rd would have probably been wiser than the early-morning flight on which they booked me instead, despite an overnight in Miami (guess I will call at least three taxi business hoping that one will show up).     Mhm, I had expected that being vaccinated is something so natural like taking showers that it doesn't need to mentioned.
    Ok, some people in Switzerland are extremely against vaccinations, they think it's bad for your body, the risks of side effects are too high and anyway most of those illnesses have died out in Switzerland a long time ago (erh, well, that is BECAUSE they vaccinated people.)
    There are now many kids who are not vaccinated against one of those kids ilnesses and ot started to spread again in Switzerland. Great.

    Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass ausgerechnet die aus politischen Gründen nicht erforderlich ist.
    Hm, well, this vaccination is only five years old, so they don't know so many things about it yet, which is my problem with it.

    Hi snails! Greetings from Stuttgart. It was supposed to be a merry weekend - 65th birthday of my mother. We celebrated, had great food and the next day she caught a stomach flu and ended up in hospital not remembering her name. Apparently, that was a consequence of the tremendous water loss and she's fairly ok now, but last night I was quite a bit terrified.

    It seems that I'm going to miss out on a whole thread, so I'll just leave some more cookies for the hungry and those who have a sweet tooth.

    Missed the whole vaccination discussion. Last week I went to just get a yellow fever vaccination (arriving at the clinic way too early, bus went out service and I got an extra tour without stops before that), but ended up with additional shots against hepatitis, typhoid and tetanus. Wonder if there is an immunization against leerhirnigness as well.

Ich lese gerade in Wikiepedia von der Guillaume-Affäre und da wird erwähnt, dass Guillaume als Spion enttarnt wurde, da er ein verschlüsseltes Geburtstagstelegramm erhielt. Man wusste nämlich, dass die MfS in den 50er Jahren deren Agenten im Westen solche Telegramme schickte. Meine Frage: Wie schickte die MfS ein verschlüsseltes Telegram? Hätte das überhaupt etwas mit Geburtstagsgrüßen zu tun, so in die Richtung: Tante Elke wünscht dir alles Gute zum Geburstag? Oder wäre das ein Telegramm von einem Cousin, der fragen würde: bitte schick mir ein Paar blaue Strümpfe? Woher wusste man überhaupt, dass das Telegramm von der MfS kam? Sie haben sicherlich nicht mit "Ihre MfS" unterschrieben.

Na gut, sie waren/sind aufgefallen (man hat sie erwischt -> sie sind aufgeflogen), aber wie konnten sie nur hoffen, nicht aufzufallen. (auffallen ist hier auch etwas zu wenig stark)

    I've somehow just become awake, but I think I'll soon hop into bed again with a nice mug of tea.


    Boah...there's nothing in TV anymore... and if there's anything, it sure will be interuppted regularly be 10 minutes sex ads. I think I know plenty of them by heart now, because I'm too lazy to change channels...

    It is again a migraine-like headache, and there is nearly anything that helps. I should not take any pain relievers at the moment, anyway, so I have to go through this headache. I really do hope that it will not last as long as the rain - it did last time (a one-week-headache)

    My mom is almost back to normal. It was that nasty Noro-virus and I was so so lucky because apparently I didn't contract (?) it. I had no idea that an intestinal infection can mess with your brains like that.

    At least I got that guy from the ambulance to confess that driving with the siren on is fun. ;-)

    neutrino I'd love to, but when I'm down South my schedule usually is packed with tons of things I need to do within two days or so. But I promise I'll keep it in mind. I actually was at the Weihnachtsmarkt - I bought a terrific pen at haufler's on saturday. I've been wanting that for years. In this biro and rollerball age I still love the old fashioned fountain pen. I think it looks so much more sophisticated ;-)

    Pens are great. I hate to sign letters with biros or the like. Unfortunately, I have a certain wear of pens …...

    I once got a real good one as a present from an aunt for my 1st exam (or was it the 2nd? Dunno ...) . I forgot it in a shirt and the pen was not very amused for being washed and centrifuged and, therefore, decided to quit the service.

    The next one I lost somewhere ....

    After that Co-Neutrino gave me as a present nearly the same one. This one was stolen when I forgot it in a jacket in a train. The jacket was found but it was empty.

    Now I have a nice one from Lamy, not so expensive, but it writes okay.

    Tonight the choir has his annual Christmas party which is usually just great: People do all kinds of funny or silly or skillfull performances. Last year we had a group playing christmas carols with all kinds of household objects. They had long searched for things with the right tune: pots and lids and dippers and so on. It was a real laugh!

    Weißt du dein Endziel schon? (Nicht dass du es unbedingt hier verraten sollst!) Wenn man das Endziel weiß, kann man eine dazu passende Strategie wählen. Auch wenn man nur Zwischenziele und noch kein Endziel hat, kann man sich eine Strategie ausdenken, um diese zu erreichen. Dann sind die kleineren täglichen Entscheidungen leichter zu treffen - finde ich jedenfalls.

    Snow is usually not such a big problem, but ice is.
    If it's icy I'll just go for a walk with him. I taught him to follow me like a dog, even without a lead.
    People make quite funny faces when they see us walking or jogging along without visible connection :D

    Hubschrauber (wart, bei euch heißen sie anders, nur fällt's mir jetzt nicht ein wie - Helikopter?) wäre schön, aber er kann sich so was noch nicht leisten.

    Stimmt, verflixt kompliziert. Ich persönlich kann leider nichts dafür.

    Also, ich logge jetzt aus, damit ich ein paar Weihnachtsgeschenke bestellen kann. Viel Spaß beim Studieren! NB summarize!

    Yes, in Switzerland we only say "Helikopter" not "Hubschrauber"

    Hi SD3, did you already order the Christmas presents? Really practical with most of the shops too far out of town in bicyclelaneless parking areas. But I still need a real Christmas present for a nine-year-old girl and have no reasonable idea.

    Does she have Playmobil-stuff? My children loved these things when they were that age. What about books or, if she doesn´t like to read, audio-books (like "Märchenmond")? Or nice earrings, if she has pierced ears.

    Oh, errrh.... of course Santa knows everything he needs to know. Just be patient and wait for the sleigh to come, with all the reindeers and the huge pile of packages wrapped in colourful paper :-)

    ah, it is snowing down again. If I lived in a region with steep slopes and if it snowed on again, there'd be a high risk ov avalanches. Yeah, I paid attention in the lectures and I can even useit practically :)

    tz, you buy a huge bean bag and what happens?
    The cat lies on it and when yu try to lay down on an edge of the beanbag, the cat threatens you with pissed looks.

    @Lore and Wachtelkönig - yeeeeeeees, "Schleich"-animals are great. My daughter is 12 and a passionate rider, and she still loves her "Schleich"-horses.

    @SD3 - Geht es nicht darum, was der Beschenkte vom Geschenk hält? Würde er sich auch darüber freuen, wenn er wüsste (obwohl er es nie erfahren sollte), wieviel es gekostet hat?

    Although I don't have daughters and therefore am not an expert, I agree with Schleich figures being a very good idea. My sons loved them at that age. The trouble is that Wachtelkönig maybe doesn't have enough time left to have a chance of getting them in time.

    Hah! I just had a look at the € 1.700 briefcase. Incredible! Now €400-500 doesn´t seem to be so expensive anymore... - just kidding! ;o)

    Hello! Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe I look for something once I am there or let her find something herself. Books should possibly rather be in Spanish and I am not sure if this Schleich and others (my little nephew liked to leaf through the catalog) has Neotropical animals.

    Anscheinend habe ich fast einen ganzen Faden verpasst...:-( Ich kämpfe mit der Heizung (wieder). Wir denken, sie ist vielleicht eine schüchterne Heizung und funktioniert, nur wenn keiner guckt. Ansonsten kämpfe ich mit Schulangelegenheiten herum - Noten, die mehr oder weniger jetzt schon festgelegt werden sollen - also nichts Neues. Gestern war die Weihnachtsfeier meiner Tochter und es gab eine musikalische Vorstellung von den 5. und 6.Klassen (Musikklassen) - und zwar 1,5 Stunden lang. Es war sehr kurzweilig aber wenn der Kuchen erst um 18h ausgepackt wird und dann noch ein Stück mit Blockflöte (unter anderen) im Klassenzimmer vorgespielt wird, ist es ein bisschen zu viel. Heute hatten wir eine Kollegin verabschiedet aber sie brachte Tapas und Rotwein mit. Morgen und Übermorgen gibt es jeweils Weihnachtsfeier im Kollegium (2 Schulen, 2 Feier!!)

    @candice - to spend ON (a briefcase) ist OK :-)

    I cannot fabricate a new house at the moment, too busy. And I missed practically all potential Hochlichter™ that have been mentioned.

    Finally my package from Sweden arrived. Now I probably have to make sure that they don't try to charge my credit card with top priority shipping or storage.
