    Hello! Thanks for the construction work, Goldammer!
    Here it is getting more and more miserable. Only 2°F (-17°C) and terrible eastern wind. Almost did not make it to the supermarket (getting back was much less uncomfortable). Tonight it is supposed to become blustery with blustery with a low of -1°F.

    hmm, I think I once had that one... but that's a looong time ago.

    I used to have musicmatch jukebox, until I ruined that programme somehow (like I once ruined my spybot, I really can't explain what kind of special talents you need to ruin a programme...).
    Afterwards all I had for quite a while was realplayer, itunes, windows-media and another one. But those stupid things all got some bugs or don't really work...
    E.g Windows media player saves all songs as track_xy. You can, of xurse rename it on your computer, but, as soon as it's on the player, it will appear track_17 instead of White Flag.

    Hi, hexlein! Would you like to download also some cold to prevent the downloaded snow from melting? You could easily get up to 30 K. (your cookies were really very good and I am very sorry that I did not manage to return a tiny package or at least a Christmas card or something similar, hopefully next year ...)

    In spite of school holidays, I have to be up to support my member of the workforce who has to work until Christmas Eve midday, poor thing...and poor me...

    Having finished all my chores, I'm about to creep in my bed.
    I would like the cold, too. There is nothing better than real good cold weather with a lot of snow (and a mountain to ski on - so it should at least be warm enough for the ski lifts to run)

    @Goldammer: No, I'm not one of the regular lurkers of the Crossover threads (or at least I haven't been one until now - maybe I start lurking around a bit if I have the time :o). I just so happened that the Crossover Chat was topping the list when I had a moment to spare and was looking for a bit of distraction from work so I peeked in and the discussion about the weather in California caught my eye (will be there soon).

    You're Not A True Student Until...

    1. You have eaten more than 2 take-aways in a week

    2. You have drank so much that you and your housemates have to sit down and piece together each others nights

    3. You have slept in more than 3 different places in one week, including your flats kitchen or corridor floor

    4. You live mostly on economy foods

    5. You have discovered power naps

    6. You spend your time on facebook, myspace, reading fanfiction or msn instead of doing your work.

    7. Your cleaners have warned you about the state of your kitchen (only applies to 1st years)

    8. You have had at least one water/food fight since your first week at uni

    9. You have eaten rice, a bowl of tinned food or left over takeaway for breakfast because you have ran out of milk and bread

    10. You have named inanimate objects and they are now mascots for your flat

    11. You have missed at least 1 lecture due to a hangover or some sort of university spread illness

    12. You have wanted or had a kitchen sleepover with your housemates

    @Wachtelkönig: Ich hoffe, dass deine Reise ohne Schwierigkeiten abläuft. Unsere Fahrt war gar nicht so toll. In einem Restaurant in Iowa hat eine nette Kellnerin uns gesehen und aus unseren verstörten (bitte mit haggard und nicht deranged übersetzen) Gesichtern gelesen, dass wir über das schlechte Service aufregten. *6-Gang* Das ist Iowa für dich. Wir waren so k.o., weil das Wetter und die Straßen so schlecht waren und wir schon 8 Stunden unterwegs waren und es uns gerade klar geworden war, dass wir die ganze Fahrt nicht schaffen würden bzw. versuchen sollten. Wir haben in einem Hotel übernachtet und waren froh, nicht mehr fahren zu müssen. Herr MiMi sagte mir, "Das ist die bisher schlechteste Fahrt nach Iowa." Ich habe nichts gesagt, denn ich kann mich an gefährlichere Fahrten erinnern, aber es stimmt, dass die Fahrt ab Chicago echt keinen Spaß gemacht hatte.

    I'm glad to hear you made it to Iowa eventually, even if it took you two days. I was slightly worried.

    (Is eventually correct here? Ages ago wpr explained the difference between finally and eventually to me, and I remember that eventually often has a quality of uncertainty - this would mean it is wrong in my sentence above. But it somehow "felt" right. What do you say?)

    @Goldammer: Meiner Meinung nach geht Beides. Wenn man "finally" sagt, betont man die Zeit die vergangen ist, seitdem ich das letzte Mal in Iowa war. Wenn man "eventually" sagt, betont man die Länge oder Verwicklungen der Fahrt.

    I hadn't visited my parents in over three years. When I finally got to Iowa again, everything seemed different.

    The trip normally takes ten hours. On Saturday the weather didn't cooperate. Because the highway was covered with snow, traffic was moving at only 25 m.p.h. Having driven past several accidents, we decided to spend the night in Davenport. The next morning we drove in blowing snow and temperatures below O F, but the roads were clear. We eventually got to our destination and were happy to arrive safely.

    hmmm, I just fought for something and my parents are now completely pissed off because I'm not giving in (though I think that's rather MY turn to be pissed off, I just hate it when they do things concerning me behind my very back) I could, of course, give in and knot it to some special warranties, that'd make both of us halfway happy.

    Darf ich auch meckern? Heute früh hatten wir hier 14 Grad FAHRENHEIT! Fast so kalt wie bei dir, Wachtelkönig. Mein Auto ist nicht angesprungen, obwohl es in der Garage stand. Ich musste auf ein zweites, mir überhaupt nicht sympatisches Auto umsteigen. Ich war kaum eine halbe Stunde im Geschäft, als ich die Nachricht bekam, dass mein Sohn auf dem Eis ausgerutscht ist und sich im Krankenhaus behandeln lassen muss. Es handelt sich anscheinend schon wieder um einen Handgelenkbruch.

    Ibiza hört sich übrigens im Moment gut an. Immer daran denken, Snowflake: Die Eltern meinen es meistens gut, auch wenn sie manchmal ganz unmöglich handeln (das hat irgendwas mit dem Alter zu tun).

    Nope. They have decided on going on holidays and having me doing the house and shepherding its inhabitants, without even asking me BEFORE they booked it. They "asked" me afterwards, but it's very colliding with my holidays.
    Great, isn't it?

    What makes me angry, is not that it's colliding with my holidays, it's that they didn't even bother asking me and them "ask" me hypocriticaly afterwards.

    SD3, das mit deinem Sohn tut mir leid. Es tut fast weh, nur darüber zu hören. Wohnt er denn bei euch in der Nähe?

    Snowflake, in Prinzip hättest du recht, wenn du schon komplett unabhängig von ihnen wärst. Aber solange du unter ihrem Dach wohnst (ohne Miete zu zahlen, nehm ich mal an), ihr Essen isst, ihren Noilly Prat großzügig auf dein Pasta oder was auch immer gießt (und ihn respektlos Nolly-Pratt nennst *g*), sie womöglich um 4 Uhr morgens weckst, wenn du mal spät zurück von einer Party kommst, usw., denke ich, du kannst diesmal auch auf sie ein bisschen Rücksicht nehmen.

    Wie wär's, wenn du auf die Frühlingsferien (gibt es so was überhaupt?) zielen würdest? Gib ihnen früh Bescheid, dass du wegfahren willst, mach inzwischen freiwillig ein bisschen Wäsche, Aufräumen, Putzen usw., koch mal Frühstück für sie an einem langen Wochenende, bla bla bla -- und dann mal sehen, ob sie das nächste Mal etwas offener zu deinen Wünschen sind.

    Sorry, sorry -- nicht, dass ich nicht mit dir mitfühle, in deiner Stelle wäre ich auch wohl auch etwas sauer. Aber ich kann mir auch irgendwie ihre Seite vorstellen.

    I don't know. See, teaching them by hurting them in a way is not something I do with great joy, you know, it's not easy for me to quarrel with those I actually love.
    But I've somehow learnt that this is the most effective way.

    See, few months after I became 18, my father still required that it'd be home by 23:30PM. Well, we quarelled and I left shouting "NO WAY!!" and simply did not show up until 10:00am the next day.
    And from now I was allowed to do what I wanted. Because the somehow learnt that I was responsible and survived this quite well.
    Nearly the same on another occasion, this timewith my mum. She required that I'd be home at 10pm at the latest every evening, because they went on holidays. We quarrelled uite hard until she gave in pretty pissed off and said I could do whatever I wanted until I was responsible for it. I almost felt sorry for fighting so hard, but it was worth it.

    Snowflake: Ich habe fast den Eindruck, dass du schon eine wirksame Strategie gefunden hast! Vielleicht lohnt es sich trotzdem im Hinblick auf zukünftiges gegenseitiges Vertrauen usw., dir das Ziel zu setzen, deine Eltern auf friedliche Weise auf die neuen Familienverhältnisse umzuerziehen. So was erfordert natürlich eine Menge Geduld deinerseits. Wie sagt man bei Kindern? Zuerst müssen sie lernbereit sein, oder? Vielleicht sind deine Eltern noch nicht lernbereit. ;-)

    A broken wrist is no fun (my personal experience in this regard dates back thirty years). I wish SD3-son a speedy recovery.

    Sorry to hear that Wachtelkönig's travel plans may be impacted by the "Big Freeze". From what I hear in the news, the entire northern half of the country is chilled by a stagnant mass of arctic air. Around here it just rains a lot at the moment, but in a sense that's good because without sufficient winter rains we're looking at a very serious drought for next year. Ski resort operator's in the Sierra Nevada are happy about all the new snow just in time for the holidays.

    Going over Snowy's list, I discovered to my amazement that despite spending quite a bit of time at the university, I never a attained the lofty status of "true student"

    Yes, there are spring holidays, one week. But I actually wnated to go coherent 2-3 weeks. And I can't just skip university lectures, as some of them are Pflichtlektionen with Testatplicht.

    I know I owe them much. It's not that I'm per se aganist it, it's their behind-my-back that annoys me and that I really see no point in shepherding the house.

    Aren't there trustworthy neighbours to watch the house? One could conncet a timer to some lamps if the house should appear inhabited. But who would feed the cat? That was always the main job when my parents were travelling. The animal used to get pretty upset and gloomy.

    We got all the things you mention, nice neighbours, timered lamps, the neighbours would also feed the cats, and IMHO my little brother doesn't really need a babysitter anymore.
    I'd most probably only defend the house against parties (I hate loud music unless it's mine *gg*) and let my bro do whatever he wants to do, if he cleans it up himself and if it's halfway legal.
    But they say the couldn't go on their holdays without knowing that he's looked after properly (as if I'd do...)

    I think for peace's and thankyou's sake I'll let them do it, if I can work out a new plan.
    But I'll send them an email telling them, I don't want to have this ever again and I want something from them, as an excuse for not being honest.
    And I hope they'll show a little gratefulness.

    The stupid thing is, all my goals, Hamburg, Berlin and so on are situated in Northern Germany. It takes me about 10 h to even get there. grr.

    Ja, ihr habt beide recht. Das Haus an sich muss wohl nicht unbedingt gebabysittet werden, aber die Katze. Katzen sollen pflegeleicht sein, sind es aber, was die emotionalen Beziehungen betrifft, anscheinend eigentlich nicht so sehr. (Wie ich es so von einer Freundin verstehe, die ihre Katzen nur sehr ungern allein lässt.) Ich nehme an, der kleine Bruder fährt mit den Eltern weg?

    Wie wär's, wenn du es mit ihnen aushandeln könntest, nur so 8-10 Tage (aus der 3 Wochen) selbst wegzufahren, wenn du jemand auftreiben könntest, der für die Katze sorgen würde? Am schlimmsten Fall der Tierarzt, oder werden Tiere in Mitteleuropa eher nicht beim Tierarzt untergebracht?

    Oder die Katze mit auf der Reise mitnehmen. Das würde deine deutschen Gastgeber überraschen. Aber wenn du mit Haargeräten im Zug klarkommst, wäre ein liebes kleines reisendes Haustier wahrscheinlich kein allzu großes Problem ... (-;

    Die "große" kalifornische Kälte (von 32 Grad F hast du vor ein paar Tagen berichtet, glaube ich) ist wohl inzwischen wieder vorbei. ;-)

    Snowflake: Wachtelkönig hat sehr gute Fragen gestellt. Wäre es nicht möglich, dass die Nachbarn auf das Haus aufpassen, während Geschwister und Haustiere vorübergehend an Freunde bzw. Verwandte vergeben werden?

    Übrigens eine wirksame Taktik für die Zukunft wäre vielleicht: Deine Reisen frühzeitig planen und selbstverständlich auch buchen (sprich bezahlen!) und dies alles auch laut verkünden, damit keiner deine Absicht verkennen kann.

    Du kannst deine Situation natürlich ganz anders sehen. Deine Eltern trauen dir ihr Haus samt Inhalt an! In dem Sinne behandeln sie dich als erwachsenen Mensch. (Trotzdem bin ich der Meinung, dass sie die ganze Sache mit dir im Vorraus hätten abstimmen müssen. An deiner Stelle wäre ich auch ganz sauer.)

    Well, if hexlein plans to ski some place around Tahoe, she'd better get on her way right now :-) From what I gather from the news, getting to the resorts is a bit tedious at the moment. While roads are open for the most part, chains are required, and apparently it is pretty slow going.

    The forecast still has "wintry mix" (Hi 29°F) for tomorrow, but the "Rain/Snow" probability seems to have decreased slightly. Hopefully hexlein is running her snow downloading machine. And it is still way too cold, now around 16°F (-9°C).

    @Flöckli #73 - Hoffentlich ist das Haus wieder da, wo es sein soll, wenn deine Eltern wieder da sind ;-) "sheperding" ist nicht nur "aufpassen" sondern "irgendwas (meistens lebendig) sicher von einer Stelle zur anderen begleiten" natürlich passt man dabei auf, aber die Bewegungsidee ist auch dabei. Ich glaube, ich würde bei "Housewatching" bleiben :-) (ist ja etwas inaktiver!). Kurz nach Weihnachten schicke ich die Kinder an die Schweizer Grenze...es kann nicht allzu weit von dir sein, wenn ich mich recht erinnern...so ungefähr 124,37km ;-). Da könntest du dann echtes Babysitting ausüben;-) Sie fahren allein mit dem Zug und werden ganz stolz sein, wenn sie das hinter sich haben - sie üben schon für die Studentenzeit!

    @SD3 - Es tut mir wegen deines Sohnes - immer wieder beunruhigend, wenn man eine solche Nachricht bekommt.

    @snowflake: your parents are afraid of letting you go alone to Berlin or Dresden? Goodness me... - mine let me travel to Russia on my own just after I passed my A-levels. And I survived ;-)
    But it was in my late twenties only that I finally managed to stop them asking me "where are you going, when will you be back, whom do you meet with, what kind of people are that, what are you going to do, etc.?" by telling them quite bluntly "Listen, I spent a year in France and a year in London, I live in Cologne all year round, you never know where I go, whom I go out with, when or rather whether I come home and in whose bed I spend the night. I go out and will be back for breakfast."
    Especially the "in whose bed I spend the night"-bit did do the job nicely...

    I'm feeling with you. I clearly think your parents should have asked you before, even if you weren't 18. It is thoughtless and sort of impudent to make their holiday plans on the basis of you housewatching without even checking with you and your plans for that time.

    There have been many suggestions from other snails. I think the most promising line of thought would be to try and find somewhere for your brother to go during that time. Are your parents a bit embarrassed at least at what they have done? Are they cooperative in looking for a solution?

    Experiences of an early morning:
    It was quite nice. The whole town but a few poor sods who had to work was still asleep on 5:45. When I then got home by 8:00 the town was just waking up. Everything seemed so fresh and the air was cold and clear. Kind of magic.
    But, as they say, if it gets a routine it will lose its mnagic, so getting up before 8:00 will remain something that is done twice a year or so :D

    neutrino: Well, so I do understand now what you mean with "you will always have a nice warm place here".

    According to my schedule a visit of Germany is not included this X-mas. What a pitty. But it means also that I can relax and enjoy .. laying lazy on my couch :)

    I recommend that you refuel your car someday and take a trip to my hometown .. since the fuel prices are that low you will smile refueling here .. beside the fact that the lunatic asylum is almost finished here

    So .. some hours work .. than I will get into my car and sleep myself home ..

    @Amu-Mimi: Quite an interesting story. I have to admit I hadn't heard of "Silver Bells" up till now. Did anybody identify the various performance played in the background? It seemed to me that among others, they featured Perry Como, Dean Martin, and Alvin and the Chipmunks, and the duo is Bing Crosby and Carol Richards (?). But of course I could be completely wrong about all this.

    We once had Gipfeli from a bakery(!) in Mecklenburg, but that was, uhm, let's call it: not quite what we're used.

    Are you sure that these Gipfeli had been made really in Meck-Pomm and not fabricated in Poland and shipped half-baken to Germany where they were just heated and finalized? We have this also sometimes with Brezeln made in the Czech Republic and just finalized here. It's cheaper to prepare them abroad and ship theme here for labour costs. But you can easily taste the difference.

    I don't think that there are many bakeries making them fully, i.e. also the batter, themselves. Most probably they usually make use the pre-fabricated batter.     The very good bakeries (like Sprüngli) here make everything themselves, glaubs.
    Migros and Coop use batter and bake it up, but they're also quite nice.

    Sodele... Weihnachten absolviert!! Heute war...interessant ;-)

    Die Kinder setzten wir in den Zug und dann...gingen die Türe zu!! Auf jedem Fall können wir berichten, dass man ganz leicht von hier aus nach Mannheim fahren kann -und die Verbindung nach Hause ist auch gut ;-) Danach haben wir einen entspannenden Nachmittag beim Kühlschrank Abtauen verbracht. Die Buchstabensuppe droht schon länger aber jetzt wurden die Buchstaben...err...Worte in Taten umgesetzt ;-)

    Last time I tried to get from Mainz to Zurich via Mannheim, the train I should have taken in Mannheim had a) a delay of about 1h and b)changed its plans and didn't go to Zurich, but stopped in Basel.

    Bezüglich Weihnachtsgebräuche - hier handelt es sich wohl um einen Fall von künstlerischer Freiheit. :-)

    I know that.
    I usually growl at my family until they flee and I have the saloon and the kitchen (and at best even the rest of the house) completely for myself. Then I turn on TV and laptop, eat loads of chocolate and give myself a few hours.
    You could also flee yourself and hide at your friends house or pay a visit to your horse (if you got one) and tell him how crap everything is.
    Or you could simply pull yourself together, but this doesn't really hepl, it just delays everything for a few hours.

    The stupid thing with Itunes is, that they're mot mp3, they're m4a which can't be read by most mp3 players and probbly can't be converted (at least I haven't found a programme that could.)
    I've got Itunes as an additional programme that runs most of the music I inherited from relatives.

    Modern fridges shouldn't need to be defreezed. There's something special in the refrigerator machine which makes that unnecessary, but that doesn't work in freezers. Best way to defreeze: take some pots, fill them with water and heat them until nearly boiling; put them into the freezer (on trivets, of course!), close the lid and wait for 15 - 20 minutes. Then the ice can easily be removed.

    You can either use public transport (search for Hannover, which is the capital of Lower Saxonia) or your own horse

    But there are somehow fewer cities in Switzerland...
    And you can easily categorize them, French name-> Welschland, Rumantsch name -> Chur and surrounding area Italian name -> Southern Switzerland German name -> Rest

    But it is still not so easy in Switzerland. I once read that in the fifties or early sixties a newspaper in the US wrote an article about Switzerland and the three major languages German, French and Italian which could be easiyl seen by the names of a city which in German is Luzern, in French Lausanne and in Italian Lugano, but it is one and the same city ... at least according to the mentioned article.

    Good morning, btw - where are the other rightpondie early birds?

    This morning, something very nice happened. Our long lost tomcat Tom came home for breakfast! I think I told you that our tomcat brothers had moved out some time in early summer. We knew that they were ok because they regularly visited a neighbour to receive their "stroke units" (6-gear) there. Leo returned home when it got cold, but Tom didn't - until today. I gave him some really nice Christmas food (Sheba...), and he ate it and has settled in the kitchen now. Maybe The Great Cat Feeder (we never found out who fed them all those months) has gone skiing or something!

    No, I don't agree. We work hard to keep this thread running and alive and then shall be responsible to work even more and bäschtel new premises?? You know, lawyers are such a strange folk, we do not have any phantasy at all which would enable us to be creative enough to duly illustrate the Hochlichter.

    I'm happy to hear you had comfy christmas and that you had been able to keep your slim silhouette. We had the children with us so I had to prove my abilities as gulo gulo (gourmand) once more ;-( .

    Diamond rings, diamond shmings. Diamonds on the soles of her shoes would fit her even more but she still believes I am just a poor boy.
    As for romantic moods: kick out the children, kill the dog, gag the cat and scare the neighbours away. Enjoy how quiet it is. Keep on enjoying. Kill silence by playing a favourite CD quite loud and start working together on just something.
    When the last song of the CD is played and the work is done it's all quiet again. Cannot imagine a man NOT getting romantic now! :-)

    @flöckli: ich stelle mir vor, wie du "pistol revolving" im Saloon (Siehe Wörterbuch: saloon) stehst - vielleicht brauchst du dann dein Pferd ;-)
