    Zu den Hochlichtern:

    goldammer: Wie immer bei vielen Themen dabei aber diesmal war sie nicht immer die Erste morgens zu posten. Wir hoffen auch, dass dieses Häuschen näher an der Wüste für sie gebaut wurde 

    SD3 - hatte einen Schreck bekommen, weil ihr Sohn verletzt wurde aber es ist doch unter den Umständen gut ausgegangen.

    suziq - lässt den Baum zu früh leuchten, erhält Hilfe beim Abtauen, steckt unfreiwillig im ICE und landet in Mannheim.

    snowflake - hält den Faden (zusammen mit neutrino) den Faden am Leben und sucht Musikprogramme und Tipps wie sie ihre Eltern erziehen kann. Sie probiert einige Cocktails aus und erteilt Tipps, wie man echter Student wird. Trotz anfänglichem Ärger freut sie sich das Haus für sich zu haben.

    Rex - grüßt kurz zur Weihnachtszeit und fährt nicht weg.

    Wachtelkönig - freut sich über den neuen Schlafsack und auf seine Reise.

    Bluesky - steht stets bereit mit Tipps und Tricks, ist aber in einigen Sachen ratlos.

    a(us) - grüßt auch kurz und braucht keinen Schnee!
    hexlein - sie wiederum will den Schnee und versucht verzweifelt beim Aufräumen und Arbeiten etwas Kälte herunterzuladen.

    skye - behauptet im CC nicht so viel herumzulungern ;-)

    Chaja - fühlt sich überarbeitet und etwas krank aber will trotzdem die neue Pfanne ausprobieren.

    la.ktho - taucht nach langer Zeit und steckt einige Schnecken mit seiner kryptischen Art an - so kennen wir ihn und möchte ihn gar nicht anders lesen ;-)

    Lore - jagt Kinder und schläft zu wenig - die optimale Voraussetzungen für die Kommunikation mit le la 

    Amy - ist gut angekommen und schenkt den Schnecken „Silver Bells“.

    Wolfman - nur kurz dabei und gibt Flöckli väterliche Ratschläge.

    Steve - könnte sich nur einen kalten Truthahn in seinem Bett vorstellen…seine kalten Füße wärmt er bei seiner Frau.

    hm--us - feiert ein sonniges Weihnachtsfest…im Supermarkt? Sie zeigt Verständnis für Flöckli aber auch für ihre Eltern.

    Norbert Juffa - lernt im CC immer neu dazu …auch dass er wohl kein „echter“ Student war!

    katieoclare - grüßt sehr kurz in der Hektik und wir freuen uns auf ihren nächsten Besuch.
     
    Mousy - grüßt auch kurz und wünschte sich Schnee zu Weihnachten.

    neutrino - kam spät aber dafür dauerhaft! Auch er hält den Faden am Leben aber durch schwachen Ausreden drückt sich vor dem Bäschteln ;-) Er akzeptiert Spritzen aber keine gelben Zetteln und geht weiter arbeiten.

    Flo - wird von Flöckli in „Schwester Flo“…oder doch lieber „Doc Flo“ umgetauft.

    wrdl - taut ab, wird ebenso von der DB entführt und zeigt sich im Allgemeinen nützlich…;-)

    „Present perfect“ wird wieder mal diskutiert, sowie Alphabetsuppe bzw. - salat, TV-Programm an samstags, Krankheiten, Erziehungstipps von Eltern für Kinder und noch viel mehr…

    Oha! Ich bin fertig…fix und! Falls dieser Faden der letzte in 2008 sein sollte, wünsche ich alle Leser einen guten Rutsch :-D

    @suziq: Thanks for the highlights and the comfy new house!

    I spent quiet Christmas holidays with my doggy and a capon. The capon was dead and a bargain (10€). I didn't indulge in romantic defrosting ...
    By the way, "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian" was very, very nice, not a bit daft.
    It's time for a walk before the sun disappears again. It's freezing cold so that I almost envy Wachtelkönig.

    @SD3 - The SVVP completion and SVVPR should be accomplished prior to the PDR. A UDR may be held independently of other reviews or in conjunction with the PDR and the CDR (a UDR is not an ANSI/ICCC Std 730-1984 requirement).

    Hallo Schnecken!

    Vielen Dank, suziq, für das neue Häuschen und die schönen ausführlichen Hochlichter.

    Ich habe auch mal ein Mannheimer-Bahnhof-Erlebnis gehabt. Ich musste vor vielen Jahren (bevor es Billigflüge gab) als junger Mensch von England nach Karlsruhe mit der Bahn fahren. Es war aber ausgemacht, dass ich aus irgendeinem schon längst vergessenen Grund am Bahnhof in Mannheim (planmäßige Ankunft 5:00) abgeholt werden soll. Zu meinem Erstaunen habe ich zufällig einen Platz in einem Schlafwagen ergattert und konnte gut schlafen. Als ich aufwachte, schaute ich zum Fenster hinaus. Was sehe ich da? Eine große Uhr! Wie spät ist es? Richtig, genau 5 Uhr! Oh Schreck! Habe gerade noch meine Sachen zusammensuchen und aus dem Zug rausspringen können, bevor er wieder abgefahren ist. War aber sehr knapp! Die große Uhr sehe ich noch.

    candice: Danke für die Auskunft. Gibt es denn gar kein Pendant zu alphabet soup im übertragenen Sinn?

    Ich gehöre zu den Leuten, die meinen, eine Google-Suche sollte in den meisten Fällen lediglich der erste Schritt auf dem Weg zu brauchbaren Daten darstellen. Ich habe also gerade einen kleinen Versuch durchgeführt: Ich habe auf meinen Namen gesucht - zuerst auf meinen Familiennamen und dann auf meinen nicht abgekürzten Vornamen. Ich habe sie aber falsch rum eingegeben. Soweit ich weiß, bedeuten meine Namen so geschrieben überhaupt nichts. Google-Resultat: Umgekehrter Familienname ergab 978 Treffer, umgekehrter Vorname = 5,790 Treffer. Lustig!

    Ach SD3 scheint sehr "multi-tasking" fähig zu sein ;-)...so, so...wieder mal "procrastinating"!! Wieder ein altes Thema. Ich habe auch wieder ein altes Thema: Sch***heizung - und das bei den Temperaturen draußen. Erst stirbt der Wasserkocher und dann streikt die Heizung wieder. Jetzt muss anfangen zu flüstern, sonst hört das die Waschmaschine und kommt auf dumme Gedanken!! *weiterärger*

    suzi, a wonderful new home but you scrambled it all up.
    A "cold turkey" isn't really a "kalter Truthahn" and you know this, I am sure.
    I won't put my feet in my wife's bed but under the the cover of my doctors wife's bed if he can tell me when it fits his wife!! (((O:

    It was a wonderful sunny day today, a little bit cold and the air was filled with the lovely sound of hundreds of (*Wachtelkönig*) honking wild geese!

    Hello again!

    Thanks for the new house, suziq! Seems like I've missed the last one completely.
    Looks like no one had really boring Christmas days ... Neither did I. Half of the family was suffering from angina (luckily I got away without it), one of the smoke detectors told us its battery was almost empty, but only at night (and I finally had to find out it was mine ...) and my mother's dishwasher has packed up (you see, suzi, there really must be some disease among these machines ...)
    Apart from that, everything was very nice, especially the kast two days ...

    Good morning everyone,
    @ suziq, thank you for the new home and Hochlichter™

    @ suziq, did you send the 'virus' and overall bad luck over here? Our heater stopped working a few weeks ago, it must have 'stopped' overnight, it was so cold in the morning. We called the company that checks and cleans the furnace yearly; they told us it could take at least two days before someone could come to repair it. As luck would have it, one of their employees is our neighbor (that was news to us) he looked at his work list and decided to come over to our home first. *lucky us*
    Our dishwasher must have leaked for some time, it damaged the wooden floor. We had to purchase a new dishwasher and have to repair the floor.
    My husband took my car for a checkup, oil change, etc., on his way home a driver (man of course) :-) decided to hit my car instead of the truck ahead of him. He said the truck would have caused more damage to his car so he "intentionally" swerved into the right lane to hit my car. Grrrrrr
    My Krupps coffee maker just didn't feel at 'home' anymore. I have to have coffee in the morning to get me going… Perhaps I should buy an American coffee maker; it might feel more at home… just kidding.
    I wonder what will be next…

    I wanted just to look in, and first of all thank suziq for this lovely new snail house.

    Additionally, I'm really lucky that all of my household appliances work fine - no trolls in Northern California. Anyway, I wish lick to all of you with trouble making appliances, but please don't send the trolls, send snow and cold only.

    No, I will have to go back and look for suziqs problems in the train and with defrosting.

    I had to look up "glaucus", which is no surprise since it does not seem to have existed in classical Latin. It appears to be a later addition (a loanword from Greek), and corresponds to various bluish or greenish hues according to my dictionary.

    Steve, it looks like you are trying to turn me into a serious scholar :-) I had a look at Liddell/Scott, Greek-English Lexicon:

    γλανκός [...] orig. without any notion of color, gleaming , once in Hom. [...] later, of colour [...] bluish green or grey , [...] freq. of the eye light blue, grey

    So, your doctor's wife is a "Ten"? What did the doctor say when you invited yourself into her bed :-)

    I don't know Frau Harke but these are the so called Rauhnächte.

    We seem to be in a very educational thread today! I had never heard of "Frau Harke" either (is she identical with "Frau Holle", by any chance?). I only know of the Wild Hunt from Heine's "Atta Troll", and there it takes place on the night of June 23 rather than on New Year's Eve.

    Never heard of the Wild Hunt on Johannis, strange but maybe different traditions. This part of the country, south of the Danube, was always celtic land, not germanic as the rest of Germany.

    As far as I know, that was indeed the case in Roman times, prior to the Germanic migrations towards the end of the Roman empire. I fail to see the connection to the Wild Hunt at the moment. Bluesky, care to elucidate us?

    My date? xD That "date" was funny. After we spent a nice afternoon together I called her up and she was like: "I think I do not feel the same way for you as you probably do for me..." And SHE was the one who asked me out for a date and who gave me her phone number after the first talk...Women are complicated xD

    Car driving's going fine too but I think I might have a too much fun with booming the clutch when using the first gear xD WAY TOO MUCH XD.

    Not (yet) much to say.
    I'm setting out later this evening to distribute Christmas presents, those people live at the ends of the earth, Süssmostindien, really. But as I'm not sure, wether I'll see them again until next Christmas, I'd better give them their presents now.

    Does anybody know how that parking disc thingy works?

    Oh, I've now gotten the car documents (well, actaully only a copy of them) so if anybody of you needs a new car, I'd sell it for 35'000€ and I'd even drive it to your home, unless you live furthere than the rhine.
    Anybody interested? Come on folks, it's only 4 years old, it's a rather good-natured car, snow-experienced, and only 35'000€.

    Parking disc:
    you simply leave it in the car, set on the time of your arrival. If you set it later than you arrive to "prolong" your parking time, you risk getting caught if a control comes before your set time. If you exceed the given parking time and get caught, you'll get a ticket. It's as easy as that.

    Quite right, I'm the one with the doggy, but without hubby ... He is a 17-months-old black labrador and his name is Gaston. There was a pop-song a long time ago I used to listen to when I did my homework: "Gaston, Gaston, il y le téléphon' qui son', mais il y a person' qui y répond". Every Frenchman and Frenchwoman has got this song in mind so that they start singing it when they hear that my dog's name is Gaston.
    I live on the French border and Gaston was actually born in Alsatia.
    Gaston is a very energetic and good-natured dog. He doesn't play with my dessous. It's entirely I who is responsible for all the holes.

    I´m so exhausted: I went (after-Christmas-) shopping with my children today (they wanted to spend the money they had got from various relatives for Christmas); last night we went to the movies to see "Inkheart"; the day before I went to a friend to celebrate her birthday with her; on Friday the house was full of relatives (dinner for 10 people); and Christmas Eve itself was another story...
    And now my children are sitting in the living room singing their hearts out for "Singstar" - some kind of video game that I had refused to buy so far, but that they bought with their "own money" now (so they told me). Actually, they look quite cute when I peep into the room, and there are probably worse video games than that... However, there´s no chance for me to go into the living room now, so I might just as well go to bed early with a good book. (Sometimes I regret that candice-man won´t have a TV in the bedroom - it sometimes looks so cozy in American movies when people go to bed and watch TV there, all cuddled up under warm blankets)

    Strep throat vielleicht? Streng gesehen muss man sich den Strep-Teil durch einen Abstrich (? throat culture) bestätigen lassen, aber wenn es besonders arg weh tut, nennen wir es oft sowieso so. Ansonsten hätte ich nur so etwas wie 'really bad sore throat' zu bieten, sorry. (-;

    Na, wenn Snowflake ganze 4 Jahre Abschreibung (Entwertung? ???) berücksichtigen würde, würde es natürlich nicht so gut das Auslandsjahr bzw. die alles-inklusive Norddeutschlandreise oder was auch immer finanzieren.

    Wir könnten ihr wenigstens beim Ausgeben von soviel Geld behilflich sein. Sie könnte zum Beispiel für alle Schnecken eine Silvesterparty schmeißen.

    It took me a long time to hoover - with three different hoovers, not all the three at the same time, of course. Now I have got the impression that I've just been dispersing the dust.

    @atalante: You like big dogs too!!! How nice. In the beginning, I didn't want to keep this one because he was such a wild puppy. He is a lot calmer now, but he still keeps me on my toes.

    Hi hm--us! Yes we had a good Christmas, thank you! Hope you had a good one yourself. Apart from the Christmas turkey with all the trimmings our Christmas was not a particularly English one. On Christmas Eve, on the intenet, we listened to a "Carol Service" from King's College, Cambridge. That kind of got us into the mood for Christmas. No Christmas crackers or Christmas pudding, though!

    Oh ja, ich habe (mir?) auch den 'Lessons and Carols' Gottesdienst angehört. Live sogar, auf dem Radio (obwohl hier schon um 9 Uhr morgens *gähn*). Immer wieder schön.

    Das würde Goldammer wohl auch gut gefallen, und uke, und penguin, und Selkie, und ich glaube, bei Solitaire und Familie im UK ist es schon Gewöhnheit. Wir scheinen mehrere Chorsänger und Chormusikfans im CC zu haben.

    I must admit that I missed a recent Anglo-German Carol Service at our local Protestant Church. I personally know the Dutch Director of Church Music, who is very interested in English Church Music. There were previous occasions, when I could introduce native speakers of English to him who then read a lesson or two at the Carol Service.
    Last year, eight of my friends were there for the Carol Sevice ...

    In previous years we used to listen to an Anglo-German Carol Service from Paderborn Cathedral in Eastern Westphalia (the core country of British Forces Germany). We must have missed that. The "Nine Lessons and Carols" were broadcast on the less popular 'British Forces Broadcasting Service 2' which we can listen to on the internet only.

    Nein, ich verstehe schon, dir haben die neu komponierten Carols wohl eher kalt gelassen. Und dieses Jahr gab es sogar 2, 3 davon, nicht wahr? Ich habe nicht den ganzen Gottesdienst sehr genau angehört, weil ich gleichzeitig auch ziemlich beschäftigt war, aber wenigstens eines der neuen kam mir auch besonders langweilig vor, ich weiß nicht mehr, wie es hieß.

    Dafür mag ich aber 'Illuminare Jerusalem' wirklich sehr, und das ist eigentlich sehr, ähm, zeitgenössisch (sprich: dissonant). Die Geschmäcker sind halt, na ja. (-:

Well, I'm happy to hear that both of us enjoyed at least some of the carols. By the way, I think it was originally put out on BBC Radio 5 and it ran for an hour and a half.

    @candice und goldammer - Wir haben jetzt eine Notlösung - naja, zwei Notlösungen...die Heizung läuft auf Minimum aber bei den Temperaturen nützt sie nicht viel :-( Heute haben wir Notlösung zwei beschafft: ein Heizgerät (für's Wohnzimmer). Dann muss ich schauen, wie lange es dauert, bis der Monteur das Teil für das "exotische" System besorgen kann!

    @snowy: In case you are still hunting for that parking disk, most people keep it in the driver-side car door pcoket, although some may keep it in the glove compartment. As for your offer of a used car, my 1996 Toyota Camry still runs great, so I won't need one for another seven years or so (I hope) :-)

    hm--us, I wanted to avoid two times the word either, you might know that is a German disease, always finding synonyms.

    Hmm, there seems to be a quite short entry in aunt Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Jazz_Quartet, they consist of piano, drums, bass and vibraphone. Very calm music, not really exhausted.

    Oh I stopped listening to Fjoergyn for 2,5 hours btw :) I just searched for 50 album covers and added them manually to itunes but now I'm back at listening to Fjoergyn. :(

    Danke hm-us aber die Heizung lebt noch...sie ist nur sehr krank!! Das Heizgerät schafft 1°C pro Stunde und wir hätten bis 3h aufbleiben müssen, um den vollen Effekt genießen zu können!! Es ist aber sehr kalt hier (ca.-10°C in der Nacht) und das Haus kann noch so gut isoliert sein, jede Heizung würde ein wenig kämpfen.

    Heute werde ich mich einfach ein bisschen mehr bewegen und dann geht das auch (und vielleicht wird die Erledigungsliste auch kürzer!!).

    "Schade um die Heizung" doesn't really fit. It isn't wrong but you use "schade um..." when your regret refers to the thing itself:
    Kuchen zu lange im Ofen gelassen...schade um den schönen Kuchen!
    Chinesische Vase runtergefallen....schade um die wertvolle Vase!
    I guess you wanted rather to express your sympathy with suziq-family than lament on the poor ol' heating's passing away, didn't you?

    @suziq: yes I do, but on the level where I am I do not profit very much from watching movies and reading. Ok of course it does help maintaining the current level but in order to really get better specially for the active use of the language I need some help. It is a major difference beetwen understanding and speaking. I consider my speaking style pretty basic and it doesnt come anywhere close to my German speaking abilities and I would like that to change.

    @FAW - Naja - irgendwo musst du anfangen. Ich habe gelesen, dass man die Sprache ständig im Hintergrund laufen lassen soll z.B. ein Hörbuch. Du musst nicht hinhören aber das Gehirn nimmt unbewusst Teile auf. Ich würde Englische Filme empfehlen (SD3, hm und co bitte weghören), da es weniger "genuschelt" wird. (Wenn ich im Kino bin, muss ich manchmal bei Nicolas Cage auch nachfragen, was er gesagt hat!). Englische Krimis (z.B. mit Helen Mirren) sind ganz gut - es werden sehr viele "Alltagsszenen" gezeigt. Ich habe solche Filme in Erwachsenenbildungskursen benutzt und auch die Teilnehmer, die nicht so super Englisch konnten, kamen ganz gut klar. "Grasgeflüster" ist auch ganz gut.

    SuziQ is highly suspicious to be a troll coz it is living near the Trollzacken.

    Desinformation of people is a very bad thing but usually a good and easy way to expand the existing vocabulary.

    I always watch the original version. Watched Boston Legal complete 3rd and 4th season without a problem. The only movies which give me problems are Scottish productions which are just made for Scottish audiences and this one Brad Pitt movie....Jesse James. Was the onlyone I ever gave up on and switched to German.
    I mostly read English books and not always the easiest literature. That's why I understand pretty much everything. (ok I had to look "prone to procrastination" up....but that is not everyday english).

    Watched Grasgeflüster (love Craig Ferguson - have to admit that I did not get his book "between the bridge and the river" cause I was lacking the scottish backround, and it sucks when you know there is something between the lines what you dont get). I think I watched most of his movies. Loved "I'll be there"

    I think it needs more than just movies and reading or maybe I just want to much.

    I once went to a business english course but the teacher wasn't a native speaker. She was just not bearable (she was more like a housewife with teaching as a hobby). I expect a teacher to be a lot better than me and that just wasn't the case....

    Haven't watched to many Helen Mirren movies. Could try myself on those. Thanks for the advice.

    Insulting Brits doesnt work. Do that on a regular base on facebook and they just dont seem to care. Even when I say that they have a face like the north end of a southbound cow.....no reaction but ROFLMAOSMP
    Maybe I should track down some other Brits and try my luck there...

    Yesterday I tried to find one of my friend's house, the one who lives in Mostindien. I printed a road-map and tried to follow it's instructions, but in some of those one-horse towns the streetnames weren't written down on road signs and I had NO idea where I was. Luckily I found somebody - at 22:30- who could tell me where I was, but I still had about one hour for a 20 minutes' drive.

    But now I've got some experiences with road maps;-)

    I´m not too sure about that; maybe it depends what you are used to. When I watched "This is England", for example, or "Kinky Boots", two British films, I was close to adding the English subtitles in the beginning (I somehow got used to it later). Do you know these films?

    zum Nuscheln: Ich finde auch, dass es nicht nur auf das Nuscheln oder Nicht-Nuscheln ankommt (comes down to? Warum zum Kuckuck steht das noch nicht in LEO?), sondern auch auf den Inhalt, die Art von Film. Die Krimiserien mit Helen Mirren sind zwar alle super und jederzeit empfehlenswert, aber auch nicht alle AE-Filme sind blöde Action-Thriller für rappende Teenager, und es gibt auch BE-Filme mit fast unverstehlichem Dialekt.

    Hi wi-chan :-) ...goldammer hat mit der Liste angefangen und ich hatte die Idee nur weitergeführt - ich bin sicher, dass STEVE es das nächste Mal ganz anders machen wird ;-) Hast du jetzt Ferien? - du arbeitest doch jetzt, oder? Im Moment bin ich sehr träge (bei leo gut dokumentiert!) ;-)

    @candice - nö - ich kenne die Filme nicht..."Kinky Boots"?? - hört sich aber interessant an! *g* Natürlich gibt es BE Filme, die man nicht so gut versteht (Trainspotting...sogar das Buch wurde mit Akzent geschrieben!!) - das war nur meine völlig objektive Meinung!

    @hm-us - und es ist mir auch klar, dass es nicht nur "Actionfilme" in US gibt. Persönlich schaue ich so gut wie gar keine Hollywood-Filme und schon gar keine Actionfilme. Ich fand aber L.A. Crash sehr gut aber solchen Filmen sind bestimmt schwierig zu folgen, weil die einzelnen Geschichten erst am Schluss zusammen kommen.

    Yeah, Trainspotting ... I remember that moment when I first opened the book and thought "Hm, I was actually convinced to have bought a book in English, not ... What the hell is this?" But I got used to the language soon enough (once you understand that "ken" means "know", everything else more or less falls into place).

    It's really practical for shopping. Small, nice to park, one can switch between automatic transmission and manual transmission, it reaches at least 220 (in free fall) and it's got space enough for me and whoever's creditcard :D

    BTW my parents would be willing to sell it for 35'000€. I guess they would even send a box of Swiss chocolate ;-)

    RE: Englisch nuscheln
    I've also seen "This is England" and in the beginning I didin't undertsnad so much, but "Sweet sixteen" (Scottish) was far worse. All I understood for quite a while was "F*ck". But they used that word quite often, so I actually understood quite much ;-)

    But I must say I don't have a problem with American film unless they start off in an accent that is new to me, e.g. Texan.

    I'm currently listening to Roverandom, the audiobook, in British English. It's such a sweet story, I really love it!
    He speaks very clearly, but as it's a Tolkien-book, I don't understand every single word anyway.

    Guten Abend, Schnecken!
    Was Nuscheln angeht, muss ich sagen, ich fühle mich gar nicht angesprochen. Es ist ja bekanntlich Harrison Ford, der nuschelt. Das haben wir vor einigen Monaten schon festgestellt, oder? Also ich im Gegensatz murmele höchstens und wenn, dann nur auf strategisch gezielte Weise. ;-)

    Übrigens, wer irgendeine Fähigkeit gut beherrschen will, muss m.E. eben diese Fähigkeit üben. Wenn man eine Fremdsprache gut sprechen will, muss man eben viel sprechen.

    In der Fremdsprache lesen oder andere sprechen hören (Filme anschauen z.B.) hilft natürlich auch und auf solche Tätigkeiten sollte man nicht verzichten. Besser ist es aber sich in der Fremdsprache mit Muttersprachlern zu unterhalten. Das Beste überhaupt ist "total immersion". (Wieso steht das übrigens nicht im LEO-Wörterbuch?) Wenn das nicht geht, dann greift man eben auf vorübergehendes "total immmersion" zurück, wobei man sich eine Gruppe Muttersprachlern aussucht, mit denen man sich ab und zu treffen kann. (Expat-Organisationen wird es wohl in jeder deutschen Großstadt geben.)

    Hier bei LEO schreiben ist aber meiner Meinung nach auch ein guter Ersatz, wenn man sich sonst nicht mit Muttersprachlern treffen kann. (LEO bietet natürlich auch andere Vorteile.) Man kann auch LEO mit dem Führen von Selbstgesprächen kombinieren. Ob sich das so gut beim Motorradfahren machen lässt, weiß ich nicht. Selbstgespräche auf deutsch führen während man Auto fährt, geht ohne Weiteres, habe ich festgestellt. *g* Soweit mein Senf!

    Jetzt fühle ich mich kulturell ganz abgeschnitten. Von den oben erwähnten Filmen kenne ich nur Saving Grace.

    Einen Smartcar sehe ich auch ab und zu mal hier im Ort vor der Apotheke stehen. Ich habe ihn bis jetzt noch nicht im Supermarkt gesichtet, kann mir aber vorstellen, dass es ganz praktisch ist, so an der Tiefkühlkost vorbeizufahren. Das hast du wohl mit "Poschtiwägeli mit Stabmixermotor" und really practical for shopping gemeint, gell Snowflake? (It can do up to at least 220 - schauder!)

    Das wär's jetzt von mir für das Jahr 2008. Ich wünsche euch allen einen guten Rutsch und ein gutes Jahr 2009 und freue mich auf weiteres Quasseln.

    I had a Putzanfall, I had to clean and sort out all my folders, but now I'm too tired. I hope the Putzanfall lasts until tomorrow.
    I have very few Putzanfälle, only once a month or fewer (maybe it's a strange hormonal thing? Putzhormon? :D ), so when I've got one, I need to make use of it.

    refers to how we use it: for shopping and for short distances. That car has never seen anything further than Constance.
    Stabmixermotor refers to the power of the engine. (this is my personal opinion. I would nt say that to someone who's very into those cars)
    So all in all you're right, SD3, but we have never tried, so far.

    @starlet - Magst du etwas von dir erzählen, damit wir dich ein wenig besser kennen lernen können?

    @SD3 - Nur um es klar zu stellen: Ich meinte nicht, dass Amerikaner per se nuscheln, sondern bestimmte nur Schauspieler (Beispiele genannt) -das wird bestimmt auch für einige BE Schauspieler auch gelten.

    Schon vor 8h habe ich Dinge aussortiert...welche Leistung!...Die meisten haben einen Ordner oder eine Kiste, in der man "wichtige Rechnungen" wg. Garantie und Bedienungsanleitungen aufhebt. Diese Kiste war heute d'ran! Ihr glaubt nicht, was ich alles in 1996 gekauft habe! Nun ja - da die meisten Geräte schon längst hinüber sind und das Kind, das schon längst ausgezogen ist, die Rechnung vom Kinderfahrrad wahrscheinlich nicht braucht,...das war bestimmt ein guter Tat! Ich habe bestimmt 2550cm³ mehr Platz in der Kiste ;-)

    Diese Kiste war heute dran! Dran is no short form of daran.

    ... was ich alles 1996 gekauft habe! Without "in" (you could say was ich alles im Jahr 1996 gekaquft habe), the use of "in" is a typical anglicism. Although it can be heard and seen often in German it is (still?) wrong.

     ... das war bestimmt eine gute Tat!

    It wasn't my idea either. Someone else (SD3?) did it a few CC's ago, and I liked the idea. It's not meant to put pressure on those who have missed a CC completely!

    re using Leo for improving one's English: as most of you know, I'm posting here really regularly, the CC has become like a circle of friends to me. So I quite often walk through my day and catch myself phrasing English comments "for the CC" in my head - that's as SD3 says, like a soliloqui (nice word! just looked it up) in English, and that has certainly contributed to improving my spoken English.

    You asked for some details about myself! Well, I am married have two kids and got my Diplom as a translator in October 2007. (I started my studies at 30, and having gotten pregnant during the studies it took a little longer than anticipated. But I am glad and proud to have managed at all.) Starting in 1991 I spent a year as an au-pair in the US. It was fun! But unfortunately, my host-family and I did not keep in touch! (My host-mom told lies about me, after the year was finished.)

    At present I am supposed to translate a speech, but this guy likes "Schachtelsätze" and they are driving me insane.

    Is it too late to thank suziq for the nice new house? I hope not.

    It's been a real pleasure here in 2008 and I'm pretty sure it's going to be nice in 09. I might not be here as frequently, though, since I've picked up a job in Galveston, TX to build houses which have been destroyed by hurricane Ike in September. Besides being away from my family for 3-4 months I don't know yet whether I'll have cellphone service or internet access. However, the insurance companies pay a truckload of money for construction workers even as unexperienced as I am and I couldn't say no to more than $500 a day. We'll be working from dawn until sunset 6 days a week and I'm looking forward to not only the experience but also to getting back in shape. "We" is my brother-in-law who is in the construction business for more than a decade, he's the contractor. We are starting this saturday. It's going to be a 20hours roadtrip and we're crossing several states I haven't been before, which is exiting in itself (on its own?).

    @suziq und a(us): Es tut mir sehr leid, dass ihr so schlechte Nachrichten bekommen habt. Ähnliches kenne ich im engsten Familienkreis auch. Ich weiß, wie belastend eine solche Krankheit sein kann, also wünsche ich sowohl euch beiden als auch euren Angehörigen viel Kraft.

    “… but 2008 was not a very good year.” Ich bin auch herzensfroh dem Jahr 2008 den Rücken kehren zu können. Trotzdem stelle ich fest, dass mir das vergangene Jahr auch Gutes beschert hat – unter anderem LEO und euch. Dafür bin ich dankbar.

    wi-chan: Saving Grace habe ich mir im Flugzeug angeschaut (wo ich bis vor einem Jahr auch die meisten meiner Filme gesehen habe). Er war ganz lustig, wenn nicht gerade welterschütternd, was mir beim Atlantik-Überqueren genau passt. Brenda Blethyn gefällt mir aber besser in ernsthafteren Rollen. (Secrets and Lies zum Beispiel fällt mir gerade ein.)
    Von Trainspotting habe ich natürlich gehört, hatte aber den Eindruck, der wäre nichts für mich. Da ich gestern mit meinem Sohn essen gegangen bin, habe ich die Gelegenheit genutzt, ihn (einen nach meinem bescheidenen Maßstab großen Filmkenner) danach zu fragen. Sein Urteil lautete ungefähr so:
    Er wisse nicht, ob der Film mir gefallen würde. Er handelt um Drogensüchtige. Der Einer kann seine Äbhängigkeit überwinden, dafür wird aber ein Zweiter, der am Anfang nicht süchtig ist, doch süchtig. Alle Anderen sind zum Schluß entweder noch stärker süchtig als am Anfang oder tot.
    Hat er recht? Hört sich eigentlich nicht so verlockend an.

    SD3, in my opinion there's more to Trainspotting than this summary. Very cynical, deep black humour, some quite surrealistic scenes (and some of which I hope they were surrealistic - hope such things don't really happen in Scotland ...) and some really strange characters. I could not say whether you would like it, because I don't know you that well (yet). You might have a look at the IMDb.

    I nearly don't dare to come in at the moment and wish a happy new year with all this bad news. I will keep my fingers crossed for everybody who needs it.

    I even nearly don't dare to tell that I had an exceptional good year pf 2008, and I do hope that will go on.

    I had Trainspotting here from Netflix, lately, because I had heard to be it an interesting film, but I did not get beyond the first 5 minutes - just the time I needed to realize that it is a film about drug addicted people. I know that I have strange problems, but I feared that with drug addicts there would be some throwing up in the film. Unfortunately, I am not able to deal with such things ...

    Bzgl. Trainspotting: Ich habe ähnliche Vorbehalte wie hexlein, aber vielleicht versuche ich's dann mal im Frühling, wenn alles wieder in Blüte steht und man automatisch etwas optimistischer ist.
    Ich habe gerade American Pastoral fertig gelesen. (Habe dazu etliche Wochen gebraucht!) Es ist eine interessante, sehr schön geschriebene Geschichte aber für meine Begriffe zutiefst deprimierend. Den Roth lese ich, glaube ich, nicht mehr. Ich suche mir das nächste Mal was Erhebendes aus.

    Hallo hexlein! Also ich freue mich, wenn andere von ihrem Glück erzählen. Das lenkt ab und dient auch zur Aufmunterung. Ich hoffe, es geht dir im Jahre 2009 genau so gut wie im alten Jahr.

    As for "Trainspotting" I refuse to watch it for similiar reasons as SD3 and hexlein even though I like Scottish accents. Already the title sounds as exciting as watching paint dry .... No, no, not even in spring I will give this bleak film a try and let it spoil my spirits.

    @SD3: I have another 50 pages to go in "Bel Canto". I will tell you later what I think about it.
    By the way, how is your son's wrist?

    Danke der Nachfrage. Was das Handgelenk angeht, hat der Junge Glück gehabt. Der Bruch ist gar nicht so kompliziert wie beim letzten Mal oder beim vorletzten Mal. (Ja, ja, das ist das dritte Mal schon!) Auto fahren kann er zwar momentan nicht. Dort, wo er wohnt, nutzt aber ein Auto sowieso nicht viel, also ist das nicht weiter tragisch.

    I wish you all a happy new year and a better one for some people than the last year was.

    I myself just found out that an online friend from the US is suffering from cancer. She told me four days ago. I try myself as a lector (do you call that that way in English too?) for her stories, which is actually quite fun.

    As to Trainspotting: I watched it once and would never watch it again. The scene where Ewan vanishes inside the loo still almost makes me puke. It is definetely no easy watching... (as in easy listening - can this phrase be used?)

    I spent my new years eve at home after coming home early from a party since my stomach didnt like the food at all. So I had a close encounter with my own loo (hugging it). Was quite friendly though. I think his name is Joe.

    Anyhow you all have a great day.

    SD3: Thank you for your nice words of welcome! I quite agree with you about "Trainspotting". There simply are movies I cannot make myself watch, and Trainspotting defenitely is among them. A trailer was all that it needed for me to understand that this one is not for me! Another film wich I- unlike the rest of the world- didn't watch was "Silence of the lambs". I have started it once, but it just wasn't my kind of thing.

    May 2009 bring those of you who didn't have a wonderful 2008 a better year. For those who were quite content with 2008 may things continue that way.

    This was just a quick note, my hour of freedom is coming to an end. My mother-in-law will be back with my two kids any minute now.

Und das Schlimmste habe ich noch gar nicht erzählt: Als Elfjähriger hat er sich eine Wirbelsäulekompressionsfraktur zugezogen. Das war aufregend! Zum Glück handelte es sich um einen günstigen Wirbel, also blieben langfristige Folgen aus.

    Für Pechvogel gibt's glaube ich nichts Besonderes. Unlucky einfach. Wenn so was öfters in kurzer Zeit passiert, spricht man von a streak/run of bad luck - he's having ....

    FAW: close encounter with my own loo (hugging it) - "worshipping the porcelain god" hat ein Kollege immer gesagt. (Ich kenne mich natürlich auf dem Gebiet nicht aus!)
    I try myself as a lector (do you call that that way in English too?) for her stories, vielleicht -> I'm trying my hand as an editor (is that what you call it in English?) of her stories

    I guess suziq will start school on Wednesday like me, because Tuesday is a holiday (Epiphany - the three Magi?).
    Poor SD3, you seem to have had your share of bad luck as a mother, too.

    I´m glad that my daughter is back from snowboarding without any broken bones. That girl is a complete mystery to me: she absolutely wanted to learn snowboarding although nobody in our family does it, and none of her friends, either. We told her she would have to make a course before we buy any expensive equipment, and she agreed to have a snowboard course as her major Christmas present. So I took her to the bus this morning, and she went off - without her parents, without any friends, without anybody she knew. No way I would have done something like that when I was her age (12), I would just not have had the courage and self-confidence. And so I was more nervous today than she was, I guess...

    candice, your daughter is really great. I wouldn't have done this either in this age. I think also neutrinito (13) wouldn't have done this. Please take care hat she will keep this self-confidence and she will surely make her way.

    School in Bavaria will already start on 7 January again? In B-W students and teachers will have to begin only on Monday, 12 January.

    Auf und Abs gibt es natürlich in jeder Familie. Wir schätzen uns eigentlich glücklich, denn zum Schluß ist es immer gut ausgegangen.

    So, wie war das Snowboarding? Hat's deiner Tochter gefallen? Der Unsere hat sich eine Zeitlang fürs Inline-Skating begeistert. Er war so 14 - 15 Jahre alt und die Anderen waren alle Erwachsene. Wir haben uns darüber gewundert, aber es ging ihm nicht um die anderen Teilnehmer sondern um die Sportart.

    Had a lovely evening.
    I've discovered that my dad was listening to the Eagles and he's still got certain CDs, so I've grabbed them to listen to them in the car. They somehow beat the pants off Beethoven :D

    And I went out with some old friends, it's somehow strange but it hasn't changed at all. We still manage to laugh our asses off within minutes (we talked about strange customes of another counntry I don't want to name in here;-) ; but really eating that, yuck!)

    Unfortunately my money card refused to work, the best before date was 31.12.08, fortunately that's not the only one I've got, and the second one worked. Puhhhhhhh.

    mhmm, I think at that age I went on horsebackriding camps where I didn't knew the other kids quite frequently, but there we had something rather strong that united us: horses ;-)
    But as I am actually somebody who's afraid of new things, the first days were always a little unconfortable for me; nevertheless I did and still do such things quite frequently.

    I did something really nice tonight which I had been planning on doing these holidays:
    For many years, I have been buying and collecting postcards wherever I went or visited: art postcards from galleries, picture postcards from places I went to, postcards of flowers, animals or people - whatever nice motifs I come across. I have different boxes into which I sort all these cards. Tonight, I took all the boxes out and sorted the cards of the last two years or so. I also looked at the old ones, and that was really lovely because it is a wonderful collection of pictures and photos I chose to buy sometime because I particularly liked them.

    Phew, done with my work. I've tinkered a programme that tells you who was the prince of Wales in what year. The database only lasts from 844 to 999 and I've probably misspelled most of those names, but so far it works out. Now I'll go to bed and hopefully I'll dream of Prince Charming and his white horse;-)

    You are right. I have just found out that I will have a one-week break in the end of February that teachers in BW (or Hesse) will not have...

    @SD3 - I think my daughter likes her snowboarding course (but even if she didn´t, she wouldn´t tell me for the life of her, because that might mean admitting defeat - *sigh* - Why are (some) 12-year-old girls so complicated???) She is in a group with three boys, and I´m glad that she still finds boys "blöd"...
    When I took her to the bus this morning she ordered me to leave before it had arrived, telling me that I could go now because a mother who waited with her would be embarrassing. What can I say?

    candice, from 23 through 27 Feb also in Stuttgart there is no school. However, this is no school vacatioon all over BW, in Stuttgart they use "floating vacation days" (??) to have the carnival week free.

    Welcome back, Lore!

    Ich war heute morgen zwecks Besorgungen unterwegs. Schön ist es draußen! Wolkenloser Himmel, kalt (Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt), der kleine Teich im Ort ist zugefroren (man sagt "lake" dazu aber er ist kleiner als das Münchner Eisstadion, also kann man ihn nicht als See betrachten, meine ich), ich habe aber keine Schlittschuhläufer gesehen.

    Goldammer: Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass es Spaß macht, die gesammelten Ansichtskarten anzuschauen. Fotos sehe ich auch sehr gerne an. Ich muss aber gestehen, dass ich nichts mehr sammele - wenigstens nicht absichtlich (digitale Fotos zählen nicht!), obwohl sich vieles von selber ansammelt. Wie wird man das Alles los, wäre eher meine Frage.

    candice: So ist es mit den Zwölfjährigen. Es gibt sich dann wieder. Nur Mut, Geduld und Ausdauer! Das schreibe ich jetzt, als ob solche Tugenden eine Kleinigkeit wären. Sind sie natürlich nicht. :-)

    Wrdlbrmpfd: Ist doch schön (und billig) mit der Staten-Island-Fähre zu fahren. Man sieht Ellis Island und die Freiheitsstatue, ohne Touristenpreise zu zahlen.

    It´s just so ... *arrrgh* that "me" feels confirmed now that "She got two children" was right only because she misunderstood dude... OK, forget it, maybe I´m not in the right mood to be very tolerant today...

    I haven´t felt like cooking for a long time. The only exception is if we are having guests and I can make something special. But this everyday-stuff ... so boring! I would love to have someone to suggest cooking something; the man in this house only knows how to make a frozen pizza. :-(

    Ich muss hier auch was loswerden. Was mich bei Englisch gesucht immer wieder ärgert, ist, dass ausgerechnet diejenigen, die zwischen Slang und Standardenglisch nicht unterscheiden können, sich einbilden, sie würden sich bei den Regionalvarianten von Englisch so gut auskennen. So nach dem Motto: ich habe Recht, weil ich AE verstehe und du nur BE kannst (oder anders rum). Woher kommt denn das?

    I sometimes think that people, especially young people, consider AE to be "cooler" than BE and so they pretend to be experts in AE. The "coolest" kind of English is slang or hip-hop-English, and I guess that´s why our students like to use expressions like "kids", "wanna", "gotta, "gonna", etc. so much.

    candice, yes, that's right but it does not answer the question why a lot of non native speakers think they can judge on the use of slang/dialect etc. without any feeling for overestimating their own capabilities. However,also about 80% of all Germans having a driver's license judge their driving capabilities to be over the average ...

If you continue you like that we will be obliged to make a "Plänle" for constructing snail houses. Since I know from experience that such discussions lead to nowhere I volunteer for construction work.

    I watched "The Silence of the Lambs" on TV and regretted it because it's really morbid, "daft" would be a euphemism.

    @candice - Ich habe auch nicht mehr so viel Lust zum Kochen, obwohl ich meistens ganz glücklich darüber, wenn ich mich durchgerungen habe. Eigentlich bin ich mit Tiefkühlpizza zwischendurch nicht unzufrieden aber derjenige steht nicht unbedingt darauf...Übermaß aus früheren Zeiten, sagt er. Meine Kinder wiederum verbinden automatisch Tiefkühlpizza mit Kino ...Mama geht ins Kino: "Super! Es gibt Pizaa!"
    Ich sollte doch hinfügen, dass derjenige welche tatsächlich gut kochen kann, (wenn er die Chance bekommt), sonst werde ich bis jetzt noch unbekannte Meckerpotentiale erwecken ;-)

    @SD3: As you might have noticed, my English leaves a lot to be desired. That's why I wrote "I of all people". I'd like to point out that I am not looking for the hair in the unction, revelling at other people's mistakes.

    Apart from that, I'm having doubts about appointing you as my reading counsellor ... "Bel Canto" was nice but I found Patchett sugarcoats the Stockholm syndrom. The plot seems to be a pretext to develop her ideas. As for the impact of music, I can feel what she wants to say but in my opinion she exaggerates and idealizes. I understand why the Japanese translator gets married to the opera diva, but I don't understand her motives for getting married.

    Now, I'm curious about your opinion.

    Hi there. Mr Lore is an exceptional cook, too, but only very rarely can motivate himself to actually do the cooking. I'm not so unhappy about this, though, because the kitchen usually looks like a war zone when he's done and cleaning up definitely is his weak spot.

    One thing I'm quite unhappy with today is the weather forecast. I feel like Wachtelkönig with the predicted -10°C and all the snow. I'm already freezing as it is.

    Anyone else happy when the holidays are over? I've got to see the optician tomorrow, because Lorbeerchen ...errrh... tried on my glasses this morning.

    kisan Hi :-) I read Bel canto a few years back for my Proficiency exam and I remember finding it very weird. I don't remember the details (will go and check, though, because I hate that I forget the contents of books so quickly), but I also thought it was exaggerated and I was completely confused by the end.

    I will also have about two hours now without our children. My son just left to visit a friend, and our daughter went snowboarding again. Yesterday she was a bit frustrated because it´s not as easy as she thought, and her tail bone (Is that really the word???) also hurt like hell...

    Can you do any sports then, Steve? And how long have you known about these heart problems?

    I have this since my time in the army, that is more than 30years ago.
    Of course, I can do sports. Until about 4 years ago I did a lot of wind surfing.
    My favorite places were Femarn, Rügen, the Salzhaff near Wismar, and the Müritz.
    Now I am doing just fitness stuff like stepping, rowing machine and riding my tricycle.
