    Kommentar
This is not just another chat room. We're here to improve our language skills, German or English, and to encourage a spirit of community. Everyone is welcome who shares those aims.

In the immortal words of our founder, odondon irl:

We come from here:Crossover Chat 193

Sorry, there is no list of attendance!!!

    Highlights

Welcome to the new snail Starlet!

Steve53 has fantasies about warming his feet.

a(us) had a stroke of bad luck, as far as her household appliances and car were concerned.

bluesky who knows a lot about "Rauhnächte" refuses to elucidate us further on the subject, given the time of the day.

Flo123 thinks that women are a bit complicated after his date turned out to be a bit funny.

Snowflake who almost gets lost on her way to Mostindien doesn't succeed in selling her parents' car.

wi-chan who is looking forward to starting her new job seems to be the only one to appreciate "Trainspotting".

SD3 divulges the secret of speaking perfectly well German: she talks to herself while driving her car.

    hexlein
keeps company to her spayed rabbit.

suziq gets a crown and a new furnace.

Goldammer is fond of the word "soliloqui" because it describes what she does to improve her English.

Rex has found a new job which sounds like a form of paid slavery.

candice dreams of watching TV in bed.

Wolfman listened to the Carol Service on BBC.

hm--US who listend to the same program doesn't mind contemporary carols being dissonant, as long as they aren't dull.

Norbert Juffa doesn't listen to the same music as Flo123.

Fleet Admiral Whipswinger has a sensitive stomach and a receptive loo named Joe.

    Chaja says "hello".

    neutrino cooks hot stuff.

Lore and Amy-Mimi have returned safely from their holidays.

If I have forgotten to mention someone, I haven't done it on purpose and apologize.

    very nice new house, kisan!
Thanks for the lovely highlights, too.

We're back from a magical walk to the Uracher Wasserfall. It is partly frozen, but all the same, quite a lot of water is still falling down. The descent over a long flight of stairs (we approached from the "upper level" of the Alb; the waterfall is sort of halfway down and falls down to the foot of the mountains) was quite icy; I landed on my bottom once. It is still very cold, around -5°C (23° F), and we had a wonderful colourful sunset on our way home.

    This
    http://www.panoramio.com/photo/11240111
is how the waterfall looks when it is completely frozen.

kisan, thank you very much for this lovely new snail house.

Goldammer, that brings some memories back. I love the Uracher Wasserfall, but I have never seen it (even partly) frozen. If I were home, I would take a walk there today. Nevertheless, we took a walk yesterday in the hills around here and I still can hardly believe that we found some icy spots on the street.

Loretta, my spayed rabbit seems to be back to normal. She gets used again to let approach Filou, my (already neutered) male rabbit. In the first days after the operation she used to run away as soon as he came closer than one foot. Filou behaved funny, too - he is not used to getting less attention than Loretta, and in the days after the operation she got much more attention, so he (looking up) was really in a snit for half a day. I did not want to be petted, took no food and made as much noise as he could so that we really had to pay attention to him. I had not known before that rabbits could react as offended.

SD3 and suziq, I am somewhat relieved that I do not offend anybody by telling that I am really fine at the moment. I anyway do not want luck at the expense of others. Nevertheless, I feel with all those who are not as lucky. I do know of bad years, too.

Thank you very much, kisan, nice new house, and not such a dangerous and ramshackle structure as the last one ;o) (see CC 193 #286)

"Bel Canto" was nice but I found Patchett sugarcoats the Stockholm syndrom. The plot seems to be a pretext to develop her ideas. As for the impact of music, I can feel what she wants to say but in my opinion she exaggerates and idealizes.

If you are still interested in books that somehow deal with music, I have just finished a wonderful book I would really recommend: Anna Enquist Kontrapunkt

Sie würde bestimmt sagen: When I fell and broke my tailbone...

Und dann ein Korrekturito (#21) "Kontrapunkt" sounds like a wonderful book recommendation.

Und hexlein: I did not want to be petted, took no food...Du meintest wohl Filou, oder?

Small children fall down, zum Beispiel. Ein Haus könnte auch evtl. fall down, was zugegebenermaßen mit Krach verbunden wäre, aber das müsste man mit einer zusätzlichen Phrase zum Ausdruck bringen.

Besonders, falls du dich das nächste Mal zum Basteln aufraffen kannst. Dank kisans großzügigem Einsatz (?) hast du jetzt wenigstens ein bisschen mehr Zeit, um zu ÜBEN ... (-;

Goldammer, wie wär's mit einfach 'still flowing'? Oder 'still coming over the falls'?

Also: Hallo, Starlet, falls du wieder vorbeischaust. (-:

I can't tell you why, but I wouldn't use past perfect in that first sentence, although it is correct in the Zeitfolge. I'd say:
I'd also probably not use "zu wünschen übrig gelassen" here; I might say "war etwas schwach" or something like that - but that's probably a question of one's individual style.

    Good morning everybody.

I hope you all had a great weekend. Mine was quite lazy. Spent most of the time in bed either sleeping or watching "Long Way Round". That was great though. I'd love to start my own adventure right away. Might be a little slippery on the streets though... at least for a motorcycle. AND for a car. Had a SLK rented and when I returned it the streets were quite icy. At the last corner before returning it I almost sent it into the wall, although I was only going about 20kmh. ABS didn't work at all. Thank God I remembered my playing around in the snow a few years ago and I made it around the curbe using the hand break. The guys behind me were probably somewhat surprised seeing a rockford turn that early in the morning. Got the adrenaline flowing.

Anyhow you all have a fun week and a good start into the new year.

The snow is what made me head straight for the doctor this morning instead of going to work first and have myself thrown out again for still being a Bazillenmutterschiff. I didn't see neither the point of getting myself and other people in danger taking the car nor freezing my butt off waiting for a train and cycling in the snow when I was pretty sure I'd find me on my way back straight away because of complaining colleagues or a sympathetic supervisor. So I just called my supervisor telling her I'd rather see the doctor again than come to the office. And she was really sympathetic! Upon hearing my voice and my cough she said "goodness me, that hurts, just listening to it, go to the doctor quick. the quicker you're there, the quicker you'll be back in bed. that's where you belong."

    Hi snails!
hexlein, Loretta reminds me of a show star in th fifties, Lorette Young.
She was very glamorous. I did not see the show very often. It wasn't really interesting for little boys. I rather preferred "Wyatt Earp" or the "Lone Ranger".

Amy, well I am not really sure about making a sugar cure. I am a sinner too!!
Right now I am eating, beside "Spekulatius", my favorite Christmas cake, "Christstollen". The Stollen after Christmas tastes the best and it gets better day by day.
Nowadays you can buy all kinds Stollen in in different qualities. I tested a lot and my favorite is the one from Aldi.
In DDR times we used to bake the Stollen by ourself. Well not actually bake them. It started in summer, trying to get all the ingredients like raisins, almonds sweet and bitter, zitronat and clarified butter. People who had relatives in the BRD got provided from there. Then you took your ingredients to the bakery.
The baker added flour, sugar etc. and you could watch how your dough was kneaded and formed into loafs. Then he sticked your "Stollenzeichen" in the loafs and baked them.
You had to watch this to be sure the baker did all your stuff in your dough.
Then the Stollen was stored in a box on the bedroom closet. The last pieces we ate in March and there was always a fighting to get the last one.

    a(us), thumbs up

Well, I had disgusting experience this morning.
I felt awful this morning but I had an appointment with the doctor to get a 24h ECG(EKG). I hardly came out of the drive way because I have very broad "no winter tires"!
At the doctors I waited about 2 hours then she called me and said:"Oh Mr. Hansen, I am sooooo sorry. I do not know how this could happen but I am begging you to come again tomorrow, we forgot to charge the batteries. BINGO

I have been absent lately as far as writitng is concerned but have read the one ot he other post.

However, I just wanted to drop by rapidly to tell everybody that I have to announce a happy event.

Having planted a seed seven years ago, nursed the plant for all this time and through several changes of apartments, having been teased by it for another seven months with just the promise of a flower, having feared it might bloom during my recent absence to Japan through the holiday season, last Saturday afternoon my strelitzia has finally opened its first ever flower.

It is wonderful to look at but I admit to being exhausted by the long wait.

My father has gaing changed my holiday plans...this time I'll probably survive it. He seems to be a bit worried because I told him, I was not going to study during the next semster, even if I don't manage to get that place abroad.

Looking back on the last semester I've learnt a lot of things, subject-related and social things. Being all alone among 200 other students isn't as funny as I thought (after 12 years of being only 20 people I thought a little more anonymity might be funny), if somebody tells you it's better to do X until the 20th of Octuber, you had better NOT do it on the 12th of December. If they say they require 20h of homework, per week and per lecture, they're probably right. Food IS exepnsive. Lectures aren't that necessary, but studying books and doing homework is.
Ah, well, I've certainly learnt many things. But also must say, that continuing school (that's what Bologna's made with University) after only two weeks of holidays somhow belongs into category "great mistakes of my life".
So I'll either go abroad or reduce universital stuff to a minimum or even don't study and go working.
Need some time for myself, need some time to relax, need some time to change the outer structures of my life, need some time to find out what I really want, need some time to grow up;)

I'm definitevely GOING to get a higher education, you know, a Matura is no education. So I'm going to finish my studies after that gap semster/year.

Steve, the name Loretta just crossed my mind when we were fetching her from the humane society. Hello snails! :-)

Amy I'd love to have the time to read novels and you even get credits for it - maybe you can look at it that way. I read Clear light of day by Anita Desai a few years back and loved it. It's about the separation of India and Pakistan in the 1940ies and it's beautifully written. Which book are you supposed to read? Considering Orhan Pamuk be "ready to get confused" (© Björk ;-)). It was only yesterday that I read a discussion about this author and it was the consensus that you have to know a great deal about Turkey and literature to even get close to following what he wants to say. I tried Das neue Leben and got lost at page 5. I think there was a bit of a discussion about the author here back then, too.
Milan Kundera is among the top 10 of my must read list. Die unerträgliche Leichtigkeit des Seins is supposed to be great - please report when you're done. :-)

I saw a TV feature about Seitenbacher some time ago, and guess who is doing these horrible spots? It's the boss of the company himself! As far as I recall, he is a sort of self-made-man who founded the firm I don't know how long ago, and it is his pride to produce these commercials quite "do-it-yourselfy". I remember seeing him sitting in a studio with a microphone in front of him, saying "Seitenbacher Müsli, lecker lecker leckerleckerleckerlecker....!"
I didn't have the impression that he was being self-ironic, I think he's dead serious.

It's amazing, there's even a Wikipedia entry about the Seitenbacher commercials:

WOW I wold never have thought that this "let's do the commercial on my own instead of paying a PUK-Student for it" thing's also so wide-spread in Germany! I thought that bad habit was only practised in Switzerland!

Here in Switzerland, actually only on Tele Züri, it's common parctice.
The worst is the one with the Recycling centre. A little boy on this play tractor is on his way out of mummy's sight and she calls him: Where du you go?" His answer "Ich gane zum Rölli uf Dielsdorf go entsorge" with that 4-year-old-voice... boah, I BET that's the kid of the CEO and he was bored on afternoon, really.

And this at the bottom is... actually the first do-it-yourself-commercial on Tele Züri, it has already been running for years now. But compared to the other self-made commercials, it's somehow the best. The others are FAR worse.

Her snowy Majesty was just shopping.

The steep garage exit was comletely icey and I had to hold to give way to a passing car and then to start again on the ice. 'Course the car started fishtailing and the wheels begun to spin.
Her majesty was slightly overstrained then and tried to start at full throttle which didn't work either it just fishtailed even more.
I had the car roll back a little until it had tar under its wheels again and tried again. Took me about 5 minuets to get the car from the garage exit to the street. :D

Afterwards I had to go to a multi-storey car park. I've never been alone in such a thing and I had no clue how everything worked.
Took me quite a while to even find a parking space, I found one, probably meant for a boby car or a bike, but the smart just fitted in there (I had to climb out by the co-driver's seat). After I rushed through the shop I had ca 5 min to find the car again, because I didn't keep the floor nor the number in mind....
Then I climbed in the car and tried to get out of the car park, but at the exit it said I had to pay something, how strange! My mum said it's sometimes, depending on which automat, free for 30min, anyway, I had to back again and park the car agin somewhere to get the fee paid. *sigh* I just put it anywhere because there were no free spaces in sight anymore. Of course, the paying automat wasn't that self-explainatory either, but a kind woman helped me out :D

    Hello snails!

Amy-Mimi's seminary is called "Literary Tough Beans".

I read "The Red Book" some years ago at a time when, maybe, I was a more patient reader than I'm now and even finished it!!! Even if this novel might appear a bit long winded and repetitive, it's a much easier read than "Snow", for example, I didn't finish either, but I might give it another try - some time perhaps. When Pamuk describes Istanbul he really makes me want to visit his city. Sorry, I had to say something in his defense!!!

I saw "The Spider Woman" and liked the film very much but didn't read the novel. By the way Anita Desai Lore is referring to happens to be Kiran Desai's mother.

hm--Us,, "The Namesake" disappointed me in the end too, especially since the novel has such a promising beginning.

Lore,, thanks for the link, but this novel doesn't tempt me at all! I think, I'm going to read Evanovich next - I only have to get hold of some of her novels. Something uplifting would come in handy. I wish you a good start tomorrow.

SD3, I find the pronunciation of "coccyx" slightly obscene ... ( I had to click on pronunciation in the Leo dictionary.)

Hat wer Kunderas "The Book of Laughter and Forgetting" gelesen?

part was wheat. The birds now need oily seeds so I will pimp it up with more sunflowers and with "Meisenknödel". I will also crack walnuts for the squirrels and the Jay (Eichelhäher). Actually the Jay do not deserve it because they rob the the eggs and the young birds out of the nests.

My neighbor has bunnies but it looks as if they can stand this frost. He doesn't have to care for his 4 Indian runner ducks because someone stole them 3 days before Christmas. Not a fine way to get a Christmas dinner.

He talks without end, very long and detailed stories about all sorts of things, and has had some English lessons many years back. He is really nice and sociable, maybe even a bit in-your-face (is that what you would say for "distanzlos"?).
    Quite a challenge!
In our first lesson, I think I will show him that there are many English words in German which he probably knows, such as T-shirt, Snack, Talkshow..., let him find more, maybe, and then introduce some everyday words with "this is..." , with pictures or so. I have no idea so far whether he'll be able to concentrate on some matter for a time. We'll find out!

    Hello snails, hello SD3,

Here, we had a very fine day with the sun shining all day and no wind blowing so that the temperatures of -8 C this morning and -5 C during the day were quite bearable. Everybody was obviously enjoying the sunshine and in a good mood. I wouldn't have managed without heating, though.

Thanks, Flo, for the nice pics! You make me feel ancient again. The motivation drug you are referring to has to be applied intravenously, I think.

SD3, I hope you didn't encounter any problems on the road. As for Ann Patchett, there is no need to worry - really - (and no need to read her novel again). While I was reading, I couldn't make out what you saw in the book that I failed to see.
Evanovitch sounds like good fun. I will not make you responsible, if I shouldn't like it.

You usually don't talk much about your coccyx, except when it hurts. Its pronunciation makes me think of a phallic word and that's how I can remember it. It was a bad attempt at a joke, I have to admit with a maiden blush.

hexlein, I don't pretend to understand what I'm reading and certainly not Pamuk!!! We are all waiting for Amy-Mimi's explications!!!

Those Indian running ducks do they eat slugs or supposed to do so, Steve?

Here an autocorrectito: It dawned on me in my car that Amy-Mimi is taking a course. A seminary would be for priests. Mr. Amy-Mimi would certainly mind his wife becoming one.

Now it's hightime to creep into my warm bed. Good night!

Hello suziq! I like the idea of a mother-daughter exhibition. I grew up living with only my mom (and her mother, too, until I was ten) and to me, there's much ambivalence in the subject.

As for my daughter, the little lady decided that she disapproves of nappies with her 1 1/2 years and she fiecely voices her opinion at every occasion. What makes the situation particularly funny is that the loo-thing doesn't work at all, yet.

Happy New Year to all of you!

After being back to freezing temperatures in Germany I long for the 7 or 8 degrees (Celsius) I had last week in the Bay Area. Still, it's not as bad as one time when I got back here and the temperature difference between California and Germany was about 30 degrees. Spent Hogmanay in SF which was nice but somehow a bit strange as well (but maybe that's just because the fireworks where missing from where I was and because we didn't have anything to drink - or maybe because we had way too much work to do around these days which made it hard to get into a festive mood, who knows).

@hexlein: thanks for waving! Hope you saw mine during our approach into and take-off from SFO. And also thanks for the card which was waiting for me when I got back yesterday! Hope I'll have a bit more time next time for a mini Leo get-together.

Happy new year & danke, dass du dich kurz meldet hast.

*seufz*

Yeah... I finally got an appointment with the building society's guy that is responsible for my apartment block for my living room windows. There's a horrible draft that I try to keep out with packs of hankies and a woollen scarf, but with these freezing temperatures outside too much heating energy just goes out the window...
He'll come around on Tuesday afternoon.
You'll never believe me what he told me yesterday: "Before I'll make an appointment with you, you have to check with an A4 sheet of paper whether your window closes tightly. Open the window, put a sheet of paper on between window and frame, close the window. Then try to pull out the paper. If it comes out untorn, then there's a draft and I'll come round. Otherwise the window is considered tight." Ever heard of that???? I'd personally put a candle in front of the window to prove the draft....

Well... Tuesday afternoon... lucky me that my supervisor kicked me out yesterday morning straight away for coughing too much and sending me back to the doctor who then handed me another sick note until Tuesday (incl.)....

Nothing seems to help. She also knows about the various methods to try to mask the "noise", but she can´t imagine having to live with it. The only thing I can recommend then is a psycholoist. Reasons for tinnitus must not always be from physical nature. Too much stress could cause a Tinnitus too.

Suppe etwa?

Hi everybody, hi hm--US, hi SD3,

I'm only here to switch off my pc. Last night I was shivering so that I took a hot shower and went to bed immediately, intending to read a little bit. It's only a few mintutes ago that I woke up with all the lights on.
This morning I've an appointment with my hairdresser. It would be nice if I could do some shopping before but I doubt it.
I'd say Goldammer prepared some spuds.

hm--US, this guy is 59, I'd be surprised if he changed at that age.

    Thanks for the links, SD3!
I think the butcher's accent is lovely, though I'd certainly never try haggis before I die: http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=fEqcxwXHJIY

oh ... thanks for the corrections. I somehow did not recognize that the starting is still belonging to the looking forward ... I know that it should say looking forward to doing sth. (and the additionally is a typical mistake for (of?) me.

I will not study English any further at the Junior College. However, I took some tests so that they know my level of English. I would be either on a high ESL level or even the first College writing, but so far I do not have the placement of the last test.
Anyway, I am taking a class on Californian vegetation and I am on the wait list for a Spanish class. Preliminarily, I am doing that to have something to do during the days. I am working one day and a half per week and still have some time left. Anyway, we are not here because of me (I just enjoy it, I seem to have so many more possibilities here), but because of my husband. Originally,I had wanted to do a class in astronomy, but the classes had already been filled up by the time I wanted to add them.

And not to forget SDs question: I took the English lessons because my husbands company payed for them. That is why I had a teacher all for myself. If I had had the possibility to choose, I would rather have chosen a group class to get more contacts here, or a teacher who would have made much more grammar.

—> a typical mistake for me (stimmt, oder:) of mine ... California[n] vegetation / California plants / the vegetation of California ... [Preliminarily] Primarily? ... something to do during the days (besser:) daytime / day ... so many more possibilities (besser:) options / opportunities here .... the classes had already been filled up (auch ganz einfach:) were already full ... my husband's company paid ... If I had had the (besser:) choice / If it had been up to me / If it had been my choice, I would rather have taken a group class / I would have chosen a group class instead ... or a teacher who would have done much more grammar.

Gute Nacht links, guten Morgen rechts, schönes Wochenende an alle. (-:

Thank you very much for the corrections, hm. I seem to need another English class considering all those mistakes. I will read them again tomorrow when I will hopefully be fully awake.

I can tell you more on Monday about the Spanish class, and if there is room(?) for me. I was on the wait list for the other class too, but I am not anymore. I think I will be in Spanish, too. I just want to keep in mind that I am still on the wait list in order not to be to disappointed.

Thanks for your comments on "distanzlos", SD3 and hm!
It is indeed more mentally in his case, and not in any way physically threatening or anything. So "in your face" obviously doesn't fit. It is more that he speaks without end ("er labert einen völlig zu"), and that he offered the "Du" in the very first minute of talking together, that kind of thing. Although the use of "Sie" and "Du" is not as strict any more as maybe 30 years ago, in this situation his offering the "Du" felt somewhat inappropriate in a first meeting of two middle-aged people talking about a student-teacher arrangement, if you know what I mean.
    So, hm--us' suggestion
He doesn't have a good sense of personal boundaries. seems to be a good solution.
I agree with kisan: I most likely won't be able to change his habits in that respect, but of course I will tell him friendly when he's transgressing my boundaries - feedback still makes sense and is necessary, even if I can't change him, I think.

I accepted the "Du", though, because he simply insisted in using it and it would have felt a bit funny if I kept calling him "Sie" and he said "Du" to me. I guess that has to do with the fact that he has been institutionalized all his life, and he grew up in a time when mentally handicapped people, even when grown up, were called "Du" by anybody who related to them in any context. Showing them more respect by calling them "Sie" if you are in a relationship in which you'd say "Sie" to a non-retarded person is something that started in the late seventies or eighties, I'd say. So this "Du"-from-the-first-minute thing is quite typical for middle aged or elderly mentally handicapped people.

Meal without fish: It was nothing special at all, just a meal I "invented" on the spot. I made pasta with a broccoli-cheese-cream sauce, and for Goldammerson and myself I added fried pieces of salmon, whereas Mr Goldammerson had fried pieces of "Oberländer", a special (regional) white kind of sausage. It was quite delicious.

    Good morning everybody. :-)

I wonder why I always turn to the CC when I should be thinking about what to cook instead... Can you guess what, almost invariably, my son´s first two (or rather 2 1/2) words are when he comes home after school? I give you a clue: It´s not "Hallo." or "Grüß Dich."

Here is a link on Bavarian dialects - very funny, I think. And most of them almost impossible to understand... :o))
