@kisan - ja, das ging bei mir auch - aber BBC nicht. Es war schon lustig diese Ausschnitte zu hören, weil sie mir so vertraut sind. Es gibt ganz viele Landwirte (wahrscheinlich, weil sie die Sprache der Gegend pflegen) und sie reden wie meine ganze Verwandtschaft - sogar die Themen!! Wenn man die Umschrift liest (und solche Vorschläge bei Leo machen würde) merkt man, wie viele Sprachvariationen es gibt! Für mich persönlich ist der Akzent aus Northumberland (Geordie) am schwierigsten zu verstehen - sie sprechen tatsächlich eine Art Dialekt und sprechen "house" als "hoose" aus!

"What's for dinner?" haben wir hier eigentlich nie gehört. Mein Sohn hat sich immer gleich selbst was in der Küche geholt. Auf den Hinweis hin, dass wir bald essen wollen, hat er dann irgendwas gegrunzt. Was er eigentlich damit sagen wollte, haben wir nie rausgekriegt! Auf jeden Fall hat seine Selbstbedienungsgewohnheit den Appetit nicht verdorben und der Betreiber des Supermarktes hat sich vermutlich über unsere Einkaufshäufigkeit gefreut.

Endlich haben wir ca. 10 "Lebensläufe" für die Handpuppen erstellt. Ich musste meine Freundin etwas bremsen, da sie irgendwelchen Puppen uneheliche Kinder unterjubeln wollte...ich musste sie daran erinnern, dass diese Ausstellung eigentlich für Kinder der 5.Klasse ist...es ist erstaunlich, wie kreativ ein Mensch werden kann, wenn er Langeweile hat!

hm, it is the same no matter whether lunch or dinner. neutrinito has twice a week scholl also in the afternoon, furthermore, he is doing sports and has "Konfirmandenunterricht" on two other afternoons ... neutrinito is always hungry and can eat a lot, especially chocolate, sweet cereals, etc, no matter which time it is.

Talking about eating, we have been in a Greek restaurant today. Well the food was okay but way to much so we got a doggy bag. One portion would have been enough for three days for both of us.

We originally wanted to go the the restaurant almost next door of us. Today was the first day after their vacation and we were surprised to find so many cars on the parking lot. Inside it was so loud, yelling and knocking and arguing, a Skat tournament. So we got out of there as fast as we could and went to the "Akropolis".

@hm--us - Wir haben in einer Kreativgruppe Handpuppen gebastelt und die Kinder mussten einen Hintergrund oder eine Geschichte zu der Puppe ausdenken - also wo sie her kommt, wo sie wohnt, ihre Hobbys etc...und wir haben diese Infos in Form von Lebenläufe dargestellt, die zusammen mit den Puppen in der Bücherei ausgestellt werden. Leider waren sie immer so schnell fertig anstatt sich richtig schön Zeit zu nehmen, um eine schöne Geschichte auszudenken...aber dafür haben wir die Geschichten den letzten Schliff gegeben ;-)

"Mighty steep" z.B. versteht man sonst (verstehe ich wenigstens) als ganz steil, was du wohl nicht meinst.

"Lordly" finde ich ungewöhnlich. Ob das bei diesem Text ein Vor- oder Nachteil ist, kann ich natürlich nicht sagen. Andere üblichere Möglichkeiten wären: imperious, majestic, commanding. Neigen diese für deine Zwecke zu sehr zum Klischeehaften?

Ich habe gerade mein Folterkammerpensum absolviert. Heute war NordicTrack dran.

Heute Nachmittag werden wohl alle PA/NJ/NY-Sportfreunde das Giants-Eagles-Spiel anschauen.

Die Football-Spiele zwischen den New York Giants und den Philadelphia Eagles gelten als "turnpike rivalry", denn die New Jersey Turnpike verbindet (fast) die Stadien beider Mannschaften.

Ich glaube, es handelt sich heute um ein Viertelfinale, kann mich aber täuschen. Football interessiert mich eigentlich überhaupt nicht, aber man müsste praktisch hinter dem Mond leben, um nicht etwas von den Spielen mitzubekommen.

In Philadelphia wird "Eagles" mit kurzem "ea" ausgesprochen, fast wie "iggles". Finde ich immer sehr lustig (wenn ich das sagen darf!).

Hier ist der angesagte große Schneesturm schon wieder ausgeblieben. Gestern und während der Nacht hat's ein bisschen geschneit aber nicht viel. Grünes spitzt noch hervor (kann man das so sagen?).

candice, we have currently temperatures in the high 30's / low 40's, and at day in the high 50's / 60's (Fahrenheit). The ants always come in the houses here during winter time because the don't like it wet outside. At the moment they are walking plainly over the carpet in the area where the rabbits reside so that we can't use our usual methods to get rid of them.

I have read that there is a 'hexchen' in Leo, too, but I have not communicated with her so far. I only came across her postings.

Hallo bluesky, hexlein, suziq und Snowflake.

Ich war heute früh auf einer Sitzung in einem Ort, der ungefähr 50 km von hier entfernt liegt. Trotz mickrigem Schneefall habe ich mich für Schneestiefel (nicht gerade Moonboots!) entschieden, denn hier waren die Straßen und Gehwege doch glatt. Ausrutschen wollte ich nicht und kalte Füße mag ich auch nicht unbedingt.

Also fahre ich die 50 km in südliche Richtung. Nach und nach fällt's mir auf, dass die Landschaft immer grüner wird. Am Sitzungsort angekommen, sehe ich keine Spur vom Schnee. Man kann sich ganz schön dämlich vorkommen, wenn man bei fehlendem weißem Zeugs in Schneestiefeln herumstolpert.

"seas'" refers to all the seas in the world, is it correct then?
The places where you set commas are without them in the German version because they work with compounds (ferne abenteuerliche Felsinseln; mächtige Steilküsten), but as I don't see an alternative here, I think it will be ok with the commas.
And I think "majestic" is even better than lordly, thanks, SD3! And thanks for the new version of the last sentence, Amy!

I haven't done anything special either today. I've been back home since 6 o'clock after playing frisby with my labby and going for a long walk with him to get him tired. But now I'm tired too. I think it's good to have a dog especially when the weather isn't very inviting. He forces you to go out, and that's supposed to be good for your health (I hope, it rally is in your case). Also the tiredness you feel when you come home should be health-improving. But what about your dog's feet? Don't they freeze when he walks on the cold ground?
My cold seems to be alright, thanks. It's getting better, at the moment I feel good enough to sit here at the PC.

Ob ich entspannter bin, weiß ich nicht - ich trinke am liebsten schwarzen Tee - angenehm ist es aber bestimmt.

Das ist so eine Sache mit dem Tee und dem Kaffee. Wenn ich im Büro bin fange ich in der Früh mit grünem Tee an. Er schmeckt mir überhaupt nicht aber ich will was Gesundes trinken. Bis 10 Uhr trinke ich schon den schwarzen und dann nachmittags durchweg Kaffee. Ab einem gewissen Zeitpunkt denke wieder an die Gesundheit und steige auf den kaffeinfreien um. Zu Hause habe ich mehr Disziplin - keine Ahnung warum - und trinke eher Wasser. Ich nehme mir immer wieder vor, es auch so im Büro zu halten. Wieso klappt das nicht?

SD3, that's due to work. In my department in the store we always eat a lot of sweets, especially chocolate, because we need that for our nerves. I never eat that many sweets when I'm at home. But you shouldn't worry too much, coffee isn't that bad. What makes things bad for your health is mainly worrying about it while eating or drinking them.

I've been drinking green tea for 13 years now. I still drink coffee in small quanities, an expresso after meals for example.
I think the quality of the green tea is very important. My favorite one is "Drachenbrunnentee". Nomen est omen!!! Decaf tastes horrible.

kisan, your questions aren't daft at all, this is indeed a very difficult problem, still today. There never has been a natural consistent language in that region, just a huge number of dialects with a lot of similarities. Even when they formed the Yugoslavian Republic and claimed to have a "Serbo-Croatian" language, they had different varieties like "ekavisch" "jekavisch", "kajkavisch", "stokavisch", and two different alphabets (the latin and the cyrillian), and the slovenes still spoke slovene ... And since they've split up, every new country claims to have their own specific language, especially the nationalists, which sometimes has very ridiculous results, e. g. Serbian films with Croatian subtitles, although of course the Croatians understand every word ...
That was only some short summary, it's a very complex topic, you see ...

Great, atalante, thanks a lot; I've been wanting to look this up for a long time. Slovenian is a completely different language then and you wouldn't understand a Serb or very little. Gaston has woken up to - I have to let him out.

Hello snail teachers, I've got a question...
I was offered to jump in teaching a Bio-LK 6 hrs a week and prepare the Abi with them, starting like right away. I haven't thought about the stuff I would have to teach since the first years at uni and I have no clue how much of a preparation effort that would be. How much time do you spend preparing your lessons? I suppose for me the job would be a full time thing and not manageable along with finishing my thesis. What do you think?

I finally can reappear in the CC. Although I was back to work on Wednesday already I had no time to even peek into the yellow boxes.

On Wednesday I had to travel by train to Duisburg. Since I wanted to be there early I had to start at 6:45 from our station. Unfortuantly the ICE train to Frankfurt had an energy breakdown: First, the light went out and the train driver said that this was nothing to worry about. In the following the train went quiet slowly and we wondered how it would catch up the delay. Then the driver said, we would probably have to switch trains in Frankfurt, because the train has severe technical problems. A few minutes later the driver announced that we would stop at a small station and all passengers in the rear had to move to the front part, because we couldn't go on. I was of course in the rear and wasn't very pleased beacause I had made a reservation and was now facing to be standing to Cologne. It took about 15 Minutes to move into the other coach, but the train would not leave the small station. Next announcement was: Passengers to Frankfurt please leave the train, there will be another ICE that will stop here to pick you up, but this train is very occupied already, so passengers to Cologne please stay in the train. Ten minutes later: We are sorry to tell you that all passengers have to leave the train, because we are not able to separate the broken down coach from the other. So there were about 200 people on a tiny train station waiting for an already overcrowded ICE.
Fortunately there was a tram stopping by that went to Frankfurt main station and so I escaped the crowd and got another train to Duisburg. The whole affair resulted in a 2 hour delay that messed my timetable for Duisburg.

That was my strat into the new working year! I hope it doesn't continue that way.

I´ve just had a rather positive experience:
A few days ago I was quite annoyed when I found out that almost 50 pages were missing in a book that I had ordered via amazon - a used book, I have to admit. I had already rated the vender positively (Which words do you really use in English for: "habe den Verkäufer positiv bewertet"?), before actually reading the book. Only then did I find out about the missing pages. When I sent an e-mail to complain I did not really expect a reply, but they answered immediately (and quite amiably) and we exchanged some nice mails. They even promised to give me a refund. Very nice!

Ich wünschte bluesky hätte einen präzise Zusammenfassung zu diesem Roman parat. Hmmm. "Ein Roman, in dem zwei Häftlinge gestraft werden und der Leser auch." Die Geschichte an sich ist nicht so uninteressant, aber die Erzählweise fand ich nicht ganz so toll. Es störte mich, dass ich Molinas Sätze von Valentins manchmal nur schwer auseinander halten konnte. Manchmal musste ich zurückzählen: Molina, Valentin, Molina, Valentin, Molina, Valentin. Aha. Das sagt also Valentin. Und die langen Fußnoten. Wem gefällt der Roman? WIMRE hat Snowy ihn gelesen.

@candice und Goldammer: Danke. Ich glaube ich verwende Goldammers letzten Vorschlag mit "machen". Aber irgendwie finde ich es unfair, dass man einem Schneemann nichts geben kann.

@candice: Rated the seller positively ist ok. Man könnte auch "gave the seller a positive rating" sagen, denn wir sind hier großzügig. Schneemännern, Verkäufern, wir geben ihnen allen etwas.

My day seemed to start pretty well. I came into our premises and saw that we only had 1 patient to care for. "Great, nearly nothing to do for me today :)" i thought euphorical. I should be prooved wrong. During that day 9 patients came in with whom I had to do the following:

-Check blood pressure, pulse, temperature
-Give keys for locker
-Give them shoes and clothes
-Do some more check-up's...

In den nächsten Tagen muss ich eine große Entscheidung treffen. Ich soll im Geschäft umziehen und mein neues Zimmer wird neu nach meinem Geschmack angestrichen. (Im Moment sind die Wände weiß.) In meinem ganzen Berufsleben habe ich mich noch nie über die Farbe der Wände entscheiden müssen. Wie geht man eine solche Entscheidung an? Ich bin ganz ratlos!

SD3, ich würde vielleicht damit anfangen, dass ich mich ein wenig über die Farblehre informiere (welche Farben anregend, beruhigend, einschläfernd wirken, etc.), dann mich für eine Farbe entscheiden, die mir gefällt und eher zu den "motivierenden" Farben gehört.

SD3 I'd say erkundigte mich nach der Impfung if I knew somebody who had planned to get vaccinated and I just wanted to know if he actually had done it and if he/she is well. erkundigte mich über die Impfung means rather that you wanted to know all about risks and effectiveness or so and have done some research.

@candice - re Amazon. Vor einigen Jahren verkaufte ich viele Bücher. Eins war ein Psycho-Buch, das äußerlich wie neu aussah und bald war es verkauft. Ich schickte das Teil weg und für mich war die Sache erledigt. Dann meldete sich der Käufer und war ganz aufgeregt, wasfür ein Schrott ich ihm verkauft hätte...Es hatte sich herausgestellt, dass mein Ex wohl bestimmte Passagen markiert hätte, die für mich wohl als nützliche Hinweise sein sollten (!) und seine Kommentare waren wohl auch überall vorhanden. Das Buch konnte man bestimmt noch gut lesen (und ich hätte die Kommentare als zusätzliche Unterhaltung betrachtet ;-)) aber ich habe ihm trotzdem das Geld zurück überwiesen.

@la.ktho: Ja, wenn ich verkaufe meine Bücher, sehen sie fast neu aus, und meine Erwartungen sind wahrscheinlich zu hoch. ;-) Ich kaufe schon gelesene Bücher nur, wenn ich sie vorher durchblättern kann oder wenn die Site/der Verkäufer angibt, in welchem Zustand, die Bücher sind. Dass ein Buch schon gelesen wurde, der Deckel ein bisschen abgenutzt aussieht, vielleicht irgendwo Tee gekleckert wurde, ist mir klar, aber ich kaufe sie trotzdem am liebsten, nur wenn der Besitzer nicht im Buch geschrieben hat. Das liegt wohl an irgendeinem Kindheitstrauma zurück. ;-) Meine Geschwister und ich haben jede Woche Bücher aus der Bücherei geliehen, und man durfte in sie nicht schreiben. Auch mussten wir uns vorher die Hände waschen und natürlich beim Lesen durften wir nichts essen oder trinken!

I buy only a few books for myself. But the Orga.nisation spends billions of dollars for books. They are always brand new (? fresh off the press < I learned from LEO).
And the only combination for "mint condition" which came to my mind is that Suzig is still in mind .. mint! condition;)

Havent followed over the last two days too closely. Just read the last few. Since I was doing quite a lot of trading the term mint condition / near mint / good .... is easy to understand and absolutely clear. Would always use that terminology myself when describing goods of any kind.

What a lively discussion this little amazon incident has started! Let me just add that I only buy books when it says that they are "new", "almost as new" or " in very good condition", and if a book is described like that I expect that it has all its pages. Buying used books has become a necessity for me since I am such a book addict that I just couldn´t afford to buy all these books new. However, starting to read a new book is very sensual experience, and I can enjoy to touch the pages, or the smell of a new book. This is somewhat spoiled with books from public libraries, which sometimes smell really bad or have crinkly and yellowish pages with stains whose origin I do not even want to start thinking about (oops - what kind of construction was that?).

@Amy - thank you very much for the pep and zip; I really needed it! And what a nice expression; I´ll try to remember that.

@SD3 - I can understand that deciding on a color is not easy. I usually don´t like to decide on things that you aren´t likely to change for a couple of years. I already hated to decide on a new kitchen, so you can imagine how the idea of getting married (or pregnant) freaked me out ;o)! Back to colors: I sometimes dream of really daring decisions, like red walls, but so far I haven´t had the guts.

I don't think it needs a childhood trauma to expect from a second hand book that there's nothing underlined or written in it. I'd expect a seller (at ebay's or amazon's) to mention this explicitly in his offer.

You can hand in your used books and get a few euros credit for them, and you can buy used books (always in 1A condition) (for your credit, or cash), and when you have read them and don't want to keep them, you hand them back and get some money back. It's a bit like a lending fee. I really like that shop and I am a regular customer there. Of course it is difficult when you want a specific book and they haven't got it at the moment. But when you look for books of a certain author who is popular at the moment, you often find something.

@candice - Ich leihe fast alle Bücher heutzutage. Unsere Schul-/Stadtbücherei ist so gut. DVDs leihe ich auch dort aus. Es macht so viel Spaß, einfach nur Zeit dort zu verbringen, weil das Gebäude auch von der Architektur total interessant ist (hat sogar einen Preis gewonnen) und das in einer Stadt mit nur ca. 15.000 Einwohnern. Auf jeden Fall ist sie eine absolute Bereicherung dieser Stadt und sie ist sehr oft recht voll.

Ich bin mit hm einer Meinung: Menschen sind flabby, wenn sie zu viele Weihnachtsplätzchen essen und sich nicht genügend bewegen. Floppy sind Menschen selten, denn wir haben Muskeln. Ein Hut kann aber floppy sein, oder eine Blume, wenn der Stengel nicht stark genug ist. Vielleicht ist neutrino nach einem anstrengenden Tag "limp".

Zum Thema Klementine oder Mandarine: Auf AE sagt man meistens mandarine orange. Zufälligerweise habe ich mich zwischen Mandarinen und Ananas zum Abendessen entscheiden müssen, und ich habe Ananas gewählt.

Weird thing is, I'm not as tired as I used to be after all the other night shifts before this one.

Eigentlich ist das eine üble Falle für Deutschsprecher, weil 'elderly' eben nicht 'älter/ältlich' i.S.v. 'etwas alt' heißt, sondern sogar älter als 'alt' alleine. Wie über 80, 85 -- sehr alt und ein bisschen zerbrechlich (?). Es gab sogar schon mal einen Faden darüber, glaube ich.

Zum Glück trifft das so weit ich weiß noch bei keinem (auf keinen? aaack) in diesem Faden zu, also hoffentlich muss sich niemand beleidigt fühlen.

Aber du und Snowflake seid wohl tatsächlich die am whippersnappersten im CC. (-;

Weiter zu meinen neuen Wänden:

Ich habe heute festgestellt, dass die Farblehre keine einfache Sache ist. Jede Farbe scheint ihre psychologischen Vor- und Nachteile zu haben. Will man kreativ sein, muss man eventuell das Risiko eingehen, dass man sich dem Delirium aussetzt, usw. Eins weiß ich ganz gewiss: dunkelrot kommt nicht in Frage. "Scarlet: This color stimulates the kidneys and the sex organs." Im Büro? Nein, danke!

Als der, der für die große Anstrichaktion verantwortlich ist, heute Nachmittag vorbeischaute, fragte ich nach seinen motivierenden Farben. Er musste leider zugeben (Farbe bekennen?), dass er - in seinen Worten - "not a great graphics person" sei. An welche Farben denke ich denn? In Richtung, naja, braun...gelb, sage ich möglichst vage, aber nichts Dunkles. Vielleicht so was wie die xxx ausgewählt hat, meinte er. Ich bin am Boden zerstört. Ich soll mich farblich einer Kollegin anschließen, wo ich mich doch gerade an den Gedanken gewöhne, dass ich auch so eine bedeutsame Entscheidung treffen darf! Andererseits ist sie Graphikerin, kennt sich bei Farben bestimmt aus. Moment mal, das ist doch die, die sich wie Darth Vader kleidet, oder? Vielleicht doch nicht.

In den nächsten Tagen soll ich einige Farbmuster bekommen. Bin gespannt.

Ja, ich stimme zu, Gernegroß trifft es wohl kaum, oder wenigstens nicht in diesem Zusammenhang. Aber ansonsten bietet LEO nur Klugscheißer (an?) und ich denke auch nicht, dass Amy an diesen Sinn gedacht hat. Ich wenigstens nicht, als ich das Wort auf Flo & Snowy bezogen habe -- jetzt muss ich hoffen, dass ihr nicht beleidigt wart. (-;

Leider weiß ich auch nicht alle Nuancen möglicher deutschen Alternativen. Es bedeutet grundsätzlich einfach 'jung', manchmal mit einer Prise 'frech' dazu. Aber es sollte auch leicht neckernd und ein bisschen landschaftlich bzw. altmodisch klingen, als würde es ein 75jähriger Bauerngroßvater mit Gehstock ('elderly' eben) zu/von einem munteren, aktiven (lebhaften, oder ist das nicht für Menschen?) 8-, 9jährigen Jungen sagen.

Eines meiner Wörterbücher (Pons) schlägt 'junger Spund' vor, das übrigens anscheinend auch in LEO fehlt. Falls ihr meint, das könnte zutreffen, kann ich einen Neuen Eintrag vorschlagen.

ROFL. "Dunkelrot kommt nicht in Frage." Scheint ja keine gute Idee zu sein. Im Büro.

Ich finde, die Übersetzungen zu Whippersnapper im Wörterbuch treffen überhaupt nicht zu. Wer sagt denn "whippersnapper" und meint sowas Negatives? Ich jedenfalls nicht. Ich würde das Wort genau so wie hm definieren. Auf keinen Fall wollte ich Snowy und Flo beleidigen. Auch das Collins Wörterbuch (habe ich geschenkt gekriegt, ist auch ganz gut) schlägt jungen Spund vor.

@Snowy: Vielleicht solltest du Idaho oder Alaska nehmen. Die sind nicht so dicht bevölkert. Oder Montana. Kleines Korrektürchen: I've heard that there's an American state...

Ein Glück, dass der Wachtelkönig im Süden ist. Momentan ist es -25 Grad Celsius, und die Temperatur sinkt noch.

Obwohl, einige dunkelrote Zimmer sehen wirklich sehr schön aus. Wie in einem alten, edlen Haus mit alten Gemälden, hohen Holzregalen voller Bücher, Sessel, Feuer im Kamin ... SD3, wenn du so etwas in deinem Büro einrichten könntest, würde der Zimmerinhalt sicherlich eine beruhigende Wirkung auf deine Nieren und Geschlechtsorgane haben, denkst du nicht?

Die stellen meistens verkniffene Augen dar, entweder selbstzufrieden -_- ("mann, bin ich gut!") oder verärgert >_< (stell dir vor wie ein Gesicht aussieht wenn man "oh, nein!" schreit!).

I'm currently trying to organise an excursion programme for migrants here. The idea is to introduce people from other cultures to nature conservation topics and to sensibilise them for the subject in order to give them the chance to form and voice an opinion. Since there are so so many migrants in Germany, this needs to become a serious branch of environmental education. Trouble is that I don't really know what kind of issue and activity would be "catchy". For example, I was told that going for a walk in the woods was something extremely German and people from other countries didn't see anything in it.
Does any of the migrated or non-German snails have an idea or opinion on the subject? Which value do enrironmental topics have in the US, these days, anyway?

Ein Spaziergang im Wald wäre nicht schlecht, wenn man den Leuten vielleicht zwischendurch etwas erklärt. Bäume und Pflanzen identifizieren. Spuren von Tieren suchen. Man sollte aber auch Bilder von den Tieren und so haben, denn der Name sagt ihnen vielleicht nicht viel.

Heute habe ich eine traurige Geschichte: In der erster Schulstunde saß ein Junge, den ich seit Jahren kenne, und weinte. Die Kinder machten mich darauf aufmerksam aber er wollte nicht erzählen, was los war. Das Thema heute war "Family Tree" und wir haben das Beispiel und den Text dazu im Buch angeschaut . Es wurde erklärt, dass man ein Kreuz neben dem Namen von einem Verstorbenen macht. Nach einer Weile kam der Junge zu mir und zeigte mir seinen Stammbaumbild und sagte: "Neben Hans ist ein Kreuz". Ich dachte, er hätte irgendwas nicht verstanden und schaute etwas verdutzt aber dann sagte er weiter: "Er ist am Montag gestorben...ganz friedlich und gestern wurde er gewaschen. Am Donnerstag ist die Beerdigung." Ich kenne die Familie, wie gesagt, seit Jahren, obwohl der Kontakt schon lange nicht mehr so eng ist, aber ich musste mich zusammen reissen, nicht mit dem Jungen (11 Jahre alt) zu weinen. Tja...und ausgerechnet heute mussten wir das Thema bearbeiten. Andererseits hätte er es vielleicht gar nicht erzählt.
