@Efroch: In general terms, you are right. Don't let Uwe confuse you. "To be a poet is not a trade, but a calling." This makes sense in English, too, even if this poet is able to earn a living by making poems, right?
I just want to add that in German culture, "Beruf" is a little more than just "profession", "trade", "job" or "occupation". Usually the "erlernter Beruf" is an important part of the self-image of a person that stays for life, whether they work "in diesem Beruf", or not. If you ask, "Was sind Sie von Beruf?", very frequently you get an answer like, "Von Beruf bin ich Gärtner, aber ich arbeite schon seit 30 Jahren in einem Baumarkt."
