    substitute for vs. substitute by

    Comment
Die Diskussion kommt aus "Deutsch gesucht"

In Leo finde ich nur "for" , "by" wird nicht gelistet.

Sind beide Formulierungen geläufig, gültig, zulässig?
Der Sinn/Inhalt ist ja 100% umgedreht.

    A) If Smith is substituted for Jones, Smith is now the new player.

    B) If Smith is substituted by Jones, Jones is now the new player.

The second sentence (B) used to be regarded as incorrect and we should say:

    B)Smith is replaced by Jones.

But this distinction is often ignored nowadays.
