    base vs. basis

    Kommentar
is there any fundamental difference in meaning between "base" and "basis" (in the sense of "Grundlage")? any rule of thumb when to use the one instead of the other?

to be more specific, the sentence I'm faced with is: "less rainfall would have threatened the agricultural base of the large population accumulation"
intuitively I would have chosen "agricultural basis" - any suggestions as to what would be better?

My immediate gut response, which other people may well be able to refine:

The agricultural base; the economic base; the base level >>> What lies at the bottom of the structure.

The basis for a recovery, a basis for growth >>> Something upon which one wants or intends build.

The country's economic base has been shattered; there is nothing left to form the basis of a sustainable recovery.
