right (ugs.) / properly, appropriately, nicely ...

'Rightly' has a somewhat different meaning and is less common. I'm not sure it would be incorrect here, but to me at least, it's not very idiomatic.

    Kontext?

dress properly? Dress correctly (for an event)?

On the other hand, "she's not dressed right" works fine.

    Perhaps more context would help.

"Rightly" suggests that something like a statement or assessment is justified, or correct in the sense that the author agrees with or approves of it, e.g.
"American marksmanship is rightly celebrated as the finest in the world."
"The British are rightly regarded as hypocritical, eccentric, and obsessed with sex."

The adverb meaning "correctly", in the sense of "in the right way" (rather than fairly or justifiedly) is "right"; so this would be the choice here, though hm's suggestions are probably better, particularly in a formal context.

In this sense "dress right" is somewhat colloquial. However, if a tailor asked "Does Sir dress right?", this would be quite formal -- but he would not be talking about your dress sense.

    (-:

Mike, shouldn't you go ahead and explain that one, since you brought it up? We wouldn't want to leave the learners, er, hanging -- but I confess I have no idea how to say that in German.

All right, just to relieve the suspense.

"Dress right" (rechts tragen) or "dress left" (links tragen) refers to whether a man's penis dangles to the right or left.

It may depend on whether you are left- or right-handed.

@hm--us, and if you do learn how to say it in German (I don't know either), I'd love to hear about the occasion when you actually use it.

Vorwärts, Muttersprachler, don't leave us hanging here!
