Since you, XE and Spike, have disagreed on this, allow me to repeat: if a) is wrong, would it become correct by inserting e.g. "thing" or "way" after same, as XE has suggested, i.e. is "this is the same thing that we saw yesterday" correct?
To substantiate my insecurity on this point: the american corpus (http://www.americancorpus.org/
- what an amazing tool) yields 356 hits for "the same thing that", 444 for "the same thing as", a whopping 5819 for "the same as" (who'd have thought...) and still 85 hits for "the same that".
Let me quote another small example from the book "Tipping Point" by Malcom Gladwell. He says: "You have 10 to lift mood in precisely the same way that
nicotine does, and only Zyban does that."
