Eine synonyme Wendung : werden verspottet ... ... are being mocked about ...

edit: though I'm not sure that phrase is the best example. There are plenty of places where it makes a difference, for example getting a paper cup rather than a glass or ceramic one; not paying tax on the order.

    Zu #4 @Robert:

Was Spott auf sich zieht, ist die Kombination von "Kaffee" (deutsch) und "to go" (Englisch), vor allem, wenn es - wie es oft passiert - Kaffee Togo geschrieben wird.

Doh! I obviously simply translated it all to English. If I saw "Kaffee Togo" I would expect the coffee to have some kind of "African" flavoring (perhaps banana or mango) - and still wouldn't buy it because I don't like coffee in the first place.

Mango, banana African flavouring? They both originate in Asia and thrive in (sub) tropical conditions.

But they are associated with Africa. Besides, we are not talking ultimate origin here but modern perception. After all, Uganda (Africa) was the top producer of Musa Acuminata and Musa Balbisiana and their hybrids. The next four top producers in order were Ghana, Colombia, Rwanda and Nigeria. After that come Cameroon, Peru, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Myanmar, Tanzania, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Guinea, Bolivia, Cuba, Malawi. (Source: Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, 2010)

So, four of the top five producers are in Africa; 10 of the top 19 producers are in Africa.

Mangoes have been cultivated in Africa since the 10th century. How long do they need to grow there to be associated with the place? The are grown in East Africa, Central Africa, South Africa and West Africa - that is, the tropical and subtropical regions of the continent.

Yes, both are gown throughout the world in (sub) tropical conditions. Again, we're talking about modern associations, not ultimate origins.

That's obviously a regional thing, associating those fruits with Africa. Here (Australia/Oceania/Asia) we associate them with their origins and where they are still grown but possibly don't supply the American market so you have the African association.

I lived in southern Africa for two years and I'm sure I never saw a fresh mango during that whole time.

Kaffee Togo ist deutsch und schmeckt deutsch!! Togo war schließlich mal 30 Jahre lang deutsches Schutzgebiet, gell! Und F.J. Strauß hat dort gern Außenpolitiker gespielt.
