    I think #2 "Splinte" would be referring to "Splintholz", which would be the sapwood; but I haven't a clue what "Astnester" would be, let alone what it would be called in English; and although I have found a few examples of usage for "helle Spiegel" in the context of descriptions of wood, I am no closer to understanding what it exactly means or how to translate it.


    I would be very grateful for any tips to help translate 1. "Astnester" and 3. "helle Spiegel".

    P.S. Dein Text (ich verlinke ihn nicht) stammt offenbar von einer mehrsprachigen Seite. Diese bietet an:

    Thanks wienergriessler, I also saw the English translation you mentioned, but I am really skeptical of "light mirrors" and "branch nests".

    Although they may end up being correct, I won't use them until I can get them confirmed.

    Found this definition in G for “Spiegel”: Fasern, die quer zur Faserrichtung verlaufen. Im Querschnitt erscheinen sie als feine und meist nur mit der Lupe erkennbare Linien. Auf dem Radialschnitt sind sie jedoch teilweise so breit, dass sie das Holzbild wesentlich verändern.

    For the information of anyone else looking for help with these terms, I have also found out more about "helle Spiegel":


    This link (http://www.holzwerken.net/Wissen/Tipps-Tricks...) describes the "Spiegel" this way:

    "Die angeschnittenen Markstrahlen zeichnen sich im Eichenholz als sogenannte Spiegel ab."

    These "Markstrahlen" appear to be what's called "Medullary rays" in English. (wikipedia)

    So the "Spiegel" is what they call the appearance of the medullary rays in a cut cross section of wood.


    So I've made a little progress there in understanding what it is, but I am still looking for an English term for "Spiegel" in this context.
