It's about some construction machine (apparently on wheels). I know nothing about engineering and would really appreciate a translation and an explanation of how this special feature aids the off-road capability. Is this rear-wheel drive (I thought that was Allradtrieb)?

Suggestion... because its rear wheels have independent suspension.

You'll have to get an engineer to explain it!

Alradantrieb is 4-wheel drive (assuming the vehicle has four wheels) or all-wheel drive, not rear-wheel drive. A 4-wheeled vehicle can have front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.

Thanks both of you. By following the link from AMS I even found this explanation:

Since a car's rear wheels don't have to be steered by the driver, there is more variety in suspension design back there. Live-axle systems are descended from the dawn of the automobile; this Stone Age technology was everywhere up until a few decades ago and can still be found on cars like the Chevrolet Camaro and many trucks. It works, after a fashion, but with the rear wheels on opposite ends of a single axle, the downside is bumps on one side of the car also disturb the wheel on the other side. Cars with independently suspended wheels don't have this problem, and they ride and handle better as a result. (http://www.advanceautoparts.com/english/youca...)
