FYI... If you wish to use metric to express a person's height in English, this is how you would do it (and not 1 m 87 cm, or 1.87 m).

Certain English-speaking countries in the world (Canada, for one) are officially using the metric system.

I also think that in an EU context, using metric (with feet and inches in brackets, perhaps) makes the most sense.

@geo63: is Canada where you learned to exaggerate like this? schnuggi says he's is 183 cm tall, you make him to be 187 cm. ;-)

geo63: all my British friends, when talking about height, say, '6 feet that's, what, one-eighty? one-eighty five in German?' Nobody's ever said 180 centimetres. Are you sure?

More FYI: “I’m 6 feet (tall)” but “I’m 6 foot 2 (inches)”

When the height or length is an even amount in feet, then it’s expressed using the plural form (feet), but when inches follow, then the singular form (foot) is used, normally followed by the number of inches without actually saying inches.

@Gibson: I was thinking in terms of a formalized written sentence, not what one would say in conversation. Yes, Canadians would say the same thing as your British friends: "I'm one-eight-seven."

@geo63: it's "five feet, seven inches," but "five-foot-seven."

or "6 feet 2 inches" vs. "6-foot-2." :-)
