I like Andy's suggestion. "Communicate with gestures" or "using gestures" would be a little less formal, I think.

to communicate with 'hands and feet', ...I have never heard. If used around native speakers of English I think it would evoke a humorous reaction. The German expression is simply a German idiom and every idiom in a language is not necessarily expressed in other languages with an idiom. If I were in the situation, I'd say, : 'We had to resort to / basically had to use sign language'
